Chemotaxonomic patterns in the distribution of amino acids of Hymenolepis palmarum (Johri, 1956) and other hymenolepidids revealed the common presence of beta-aminoisobutyric acid, lysine, phenylalanine and tyrosine but 3,4 dihydroxyphenylalanine and norleucine were exclusive to H. palmarum. Both qualitative and quantitative differences in amino acids have been recorded.
Following a paravertebral surgical incision, mature, female rats under ether anaesthesia were exposed to either 3% nitrous oxide, continuously for 48 h, or 50% nitrous oxide, 4 h each day for 7 days. For each exposure group, a similar number of rats was exposed to atmospheres containing no nitrous oxide. Wound healing was assessed by measurement of the breaking strengths of wound samples. No statistically significant influence on breaking strength could be attributed to nitrous oxide following either exposure sequence.
The nucleotide sequence of the Moloney murine sarcoma virus strain HT-1 (HT1MSV) mos gene differs from that of the cellular mos gene in three positions, but these are silent changes, and the amino acid sequence of the v-mos and c-mos open reading frames are identical. We have overproduced the mos HT1MSV (equivalent to c-mos) in Escherichia coli under the control of phage lambda promoter (pL). The E. coli p40mos protein thus obtained was partially purified and examined for several biochemical activities. We show that the p40mos binds ATP analog p-fluorosulfonylbenzoyladenosine and exhibits ATPase activity.
Twelve amino acids were detected in six davaineid cestodes, Davainea hewetensis Dhawan & Capoor (1972) collected from one Gallus gallus domesticus L. at Allahabad, India. Chemotaxonomic studies within the family Davaineidae have shown the presence of cystine and hydroxyproline only in D. hewetensis, although phenylalanine and proline occur in all species examined previously.

Retrospective analysis of 4886 adults undergoing coronary arteriography for evaluation of angina between October 1988 and December 1991, revealed coronary artery fistulae in eight patients (all men, aged 36-69 years). No murmur was audible in any of these eight patients. Associated significant coronary artery disease was detected in five patients. The feeder arteries to the fistula were both the left main coronary artery and the left anterior descending artery (LAD) in two, the LAD in six, and the right coronary artery in two patients. The fistula terminated in the pulmonary artery in seven patients and in the right atrium in one patient. Successful operative treatment (coronary artery bypass grafting and ligation of the fistula) was undertaken in four patients with severe obstructive coronary artery disease with satisfactory results. Follow-up for up to 2 years of the three patients with coronary artery fistula and no associated coronary artery disease who did not undergo surgery revealed continuing good prognosis. We conclude that coronary artery fistula in adults is a distinct, though rare (incidence in present series 0.11%) entity, without audible murmur, commonly associated with coronary artery obstructive disease, and that the diagnosis is mostly incidental during routine coronary arteriography.
One hundred and fifty nine neonates were ventilated over a period of one year of whom 74 (46.54%) survived. This study aims to analyse the indications, complications and outcome of babies requiring mechanical ventilation. The early outcome measures were (i) survival rate with respect to birth weight, gestation and indication of ventilation, and (ii) Complications of assisted ventilation. One hundred and forty seven babies received IPPV and 34 received CPAP. Twenty two out of these 34 required IPPV later. Survival was cent percent on exclusive CPAP mode. HMD was the commonest indication for ventilation followed by Birth asphyxia, Apnea of prematurity, Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the New born. Survival rates increased with increasing birth weight and gestational age, changing from 25% for < 1000 gm and 20% for < 28 wks to 53% for > 2500 gms and 50.2% for > 37 wks. Prolonged ventilatory support was needed for HMD (mean 114 hrs) and PPHN (mean 156 hrs). Commonest complication was Sepsis (26%) followed by Pulmonary hemorrhage, Pneumothorax and IVH. Lower success rates in ventilation is due to the poor survival of babies weighing < 1000 gms and those with a gestation of < 28 wks with nosocomial infections as a major complication of assisted ventilation being an additional factor.
Fifty patients with grade III and IV malnutrition with diarrhoeal dehydration were studied. Hyperglycemia was present in 5 cases at admission. Serum sodium levels were normal in all of them except one case who had hyponatremia. Blood sugar levels were normal in all the cases after rehydration with ORS. Possible mechanisms in pathogenesis of hyperglycemia are discussed.
The retrospective data on childhood poisoning from eight regional hospitals in India has been reviewed. The demographic features and types of poisonings encountered have been compared. The analysis of the data indicated that pediatric poisonings constituted 0.23-3.3% of the total poisoning. The mortality ranged from 0.64-11.6% with highest being from Shimla. Accidental poisoning was common involving 50-90% of children below 5 years of age and males outnumbered the females. Suicidal poisoning was seen after 13 years of age and was due to drugs and household chemicals. One of the hospitals in Delhi recorded a very high incidence (66.6%) of drug poisoning in children. The drugs consumed belonged to phenothiazines, antiepileptics and antipyretics. Iron poisoning was seen in younger children. Kerosene was one of the causes of accidental poisoning at all hospitals except Shimla and rural Maharashtra were probably wood charcoal is widely used. Pesticide poisoning was more prevalent in Punjab and West Bengal whereas plant poisoning was very common in Shimla. Significant number of snake envenomation has been recorded from rural Maharashtra. Other less common accidental poisonings in children included alcohol, corrosives, heavy metals, rodenticides, detergents and disinfectants. Thus various regions in the country showed some variation in types and frequency of childhood poisoning which could be attributed to different geographical and socio-economic background.
Our previously reported data from DNA sequence studies of the c-myc locus show that the human c-myc exon 1 has an open reading frame capable of encoding a protein of 188 amino acid residues. To confirm the presence of the open reading frame, we constructed a recombinant vector (pMCP60) that contains a segment of the lambda cII translational initiation region, a portion of the N-terminus of the v-mos gene, and 639 base pairs of the first exon of the human c-myc gene. pMCP60 expresses a 38 kilodalton tripartate protein (cII-mos-myc), which was purified by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The presence of myc exon 1 sequences in the cII-mos-myc fusion protein was confirmed by partial amino acid sequence analysis. These experiments further establish that the first exon of the human c-myc gene contains an open reading frame capable of expressing a protein in Escherichia coli.
We have constructed a novel vector (pN-7) that is capable of producing large amounts of recombinant proteins in E. coli and requires minimal manipulation for the construction of recombinant expression vectors. This expression vector (pN-7) contains the tightly regulated lambda pL promoter, cII ribosome binding site, and initiator condon ATG. The pN-7 vector also contains cleavage sites for the restriction enzymes SmaI, EcoRV, and HpaI that provide blunt ends in all three reading frames. Thus after cleavage with the appropriate restriction enzyme, this novel vector can be directly ligated to the DNA fragment that contains the open reading frame without further manipulation.
BACKGROUND: Ultrasonographic measurement of thyroid volume is increasingly being used to assess prevalence of iodine deficiency in a community. OBJECTIVES: To assess thyroid volume by ultrasonography in normal Delhi children, and compare them with the recently adopted WHO reference standards. METHODS: One hundred and three children aged of 6-10 years were enrolled from the paediatric outpatient clinic in a prospective study. Thyroid volume was estimated by ultrasound, and urinary iodine levels were measured for all subjects by spot urine samples. RESULTS: Goitre prevalence was 24.3% on clinical assessment. Urinary iodine levels fell in the range of mild to moderate deficiency in 61% of the children. None of the children met the WHO recommended ultrasonographic criteria for goitre (thyroid volume >97th percentile of the reference standards), when WHO age-specific norms were used for comparison. On applying body surface area (BSA)-specific norms, only two children were classified as having goitre. CONCLUSIONS: The WHO standards for thyroid volume by ultrasonography tended to underestimate goitre prevalence.
Priapism is an uncommon but serious condition with major long-term sequelae. The commoner, ischemic variety is a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention in order to avoid erectile dysfunction. However, the high flow variety is non-ischemic and the patient may not seek immediate therapy. The options of management for this rare, painless form of priapism vary from conservative therapy to embolization of the internal pudendal artery or, in some cases, surgery that may result in subsequent erectile dysfunction. We present a case of a 24-year-old man who presented with priapism of six-day duration, 10 days after perineal injury. Doppler ultrasonogram of the penis revealed a cavernosal artery pseudoaneurysm. Pudendal artery angiogram done four days later revealed no leak and the priapism subsided spontaneously with subsequent return of normal erections.
The indications for the outcome of use of intraaortic balloon pulsation (IABP) in 66 patients (65 males, 1 female), in addition to the usual conventional medical therapy, are reported here. IABP was used for treatment of cardiogenic shock (5 patients), acute myocardial infarction with rupture of interventricular septum (2 patients), acute myocardial infarction with refractory left ventricular failure (2 patients), resistant ventricular tachyarrhythmias (5 patients), refractory angina (50 patients) and for hypotension following high risk coronary angiography (2 patients). A Datascope 10.5 F percutaneous balloon was inserted in all, mostly using the left femoral artery. Either definitive treatment (coronary artery bypass surgery or coronary angioplasty) was offered when feasible or the balloon was weaned off. Twelve patients underwent coronary angiography on IABP; while 31 patients had undergone the angiography earlier. Surgery was possible in 33 patients with 90% survival rate. The non surgical group showed 30% survival rate. The complications of IABP encountered were: leg ischaemia (2 patients), septicemia (4 patients) and balloon rupture (2 patients). Our experience suggests that percutaneous IABP is a very useful management procedure for seriously sick high risk patients prior to definitive therapy. Patients who could have a definitive treatment while on IABP, especially the group with refractory angina, did best on a short term follow up. Vascular complications are minimal while on IABP.
