The development of prenatal diagnosis in Italy was made difficult by the restrictions of the old abortion law and only in recent years has a consistent number of cases been investigated. We report the experience on prenatal chromosome diagnosis of ten Italian centers participating in a collaborative study on 4952 diagnoses performed from 1972 to 1980. The main indication groups were: advanced maternal age (2882 cases), previous child with chromosome anomaly from parents with normal karyotype (847 cases), and chromosome anomaly in one parent (97 cases). The other indications for amniocentesis, including cases without a cytogenetic risk, have been assembled into a "miscellaneous" group (1126 cases). We found 125 abnormal fetal karyotypes (2.5%) of which 89 were unbalanced (1.8%). The frequencies and types of chromosome anomalies are reported in detail for each indication group and are compared with the corresponding one from the European Munich Conference. The great majority of these Italian data were not included in the Munich report.
The repair pattern of the reticular lamina of the organ of Corti was studied after idiophatic hair-cell loss and ototoxic damage. The present report examines the repairing capacities of the inner and outer pillars of Corti and Deiters' cells in guinea pigs that received aminoglycosides for 21 days. By means of scanning electron microscopy, the defects of the reticular lamina, the hypertrophic processes of the supporting cells, and numerical increase of microvilli were observed.
Ribostamycin ototoxicity was tested in a group of 28 albino guinea-pigs of both sexes, body-weight about 250-450 g with auricular Prayer's reflex present. The mounting of the cochlea on a metal support and the scanning electron microscope observations are described, The cochleacytogram of the group treated daily with 200 mg/kg ten days consecutively is comparable to that of the non-treated group.

Anemia is one of the complications of terminal chronic renal failure that may worsen with periodical hemodialysis because of residual blood losses in the dialyzers that may be significant if clotting occurs within the circulation system. The potential iron deficiency component of the anemia has been studied in 86 patients submitted to periodic hemodialysis by measurement of hemoglobin, serum iron, transferrin saturation, total iron binding capacity, and ferritin. The following correlations were investigated: degree of anemia and type of renal disease, months on hemodialysis and hemoglobin, months on hemodialysis and serum ferritin, and liters of blood transfused and serum ferritin. Statistically significant correlations were found between months on hemodialysis and hemoglobin, and between liters of blood transfused and serum ferritin. From the correlation between serum iron and ferritin the patients could be classified in three groups: 1, with either normal or low serum iron and ferritin, candidates to iron therapy; 2, with elevated serum iron and ferritin, needing no iron treatment; and 3, with unequal changes of serum iron and ferritin, in whom iron kinetic studies are indicated in order to discover the patents that may benefit from iron therapy.

Human lymphocytes were efficiently hybridized with three rodent cell lines growing attached to a substrate, by a procedure similar to the monolayer fusion technique. Lymphocytes in suspension were directly added to the monolayer and cocultured for a few hours. Treatment with polyethylene glycol (PEG) induced close contact between the two cell types, and extensive cell fusion occurred. The rate of hybridization differed markedly for the different cell lines used.

16 healthy and ophthalmologically normal truck drivers are tested with a battery of tests according to the routine described in the following paper. This includes isopter perimetry, colour discrimination, recovery of sensitivity during dark adaptation and refraction at both far and near points, in order to record night myopia as well as night presbyopia. The ranges of individual variability are reported. As far as refraction is concerned, it seems of interest to stress the individual differences in a sort of "transient anisometropia" under incoming twilight.

A case of recurrent abortion was found to be associated with the presence in the mother of a balanced translocation between chromosomes 4 and 9. The karyotypes of the proposita was: 46,XX,t(4;9)(q35;q12). The effects of this translocation are discussed in the light of other cases reported in the literature.
