[Course of the epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in Catalonia. Descriptive analysis of the case registry].

Since the beginning of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, the systems for epidemiological surveillance have monitored the dynamics of spread of the disease, thus permitting to identify the possible risk factors and the evaluation of the preventive measures that have been carried out. In the present article the data collected in the AIDS registry for Catalonia are reported. In contrast with the overall figures for the rest of Spain, in Catalonia the most numerous group of patients was represented by homosexual or bisexual males until the second half of 1986; since then, parenteral drug abusers became the major group of risk as in other countries from Southern Europe. In addition, a consistent increase in the number of involved females and children and a small increase in those cases where the only possible known route of transmission was heterosexual contact was observed.

Cranial CT scan in transient global amnesia.

The occurrence of cerebral infarction in patients with transient global amnesia (n = 43) was evaluated by CT scan and compared to that of patients with transient ischemic attacks (TIA) (n = 58) and with no neurological disease (n = 52). Significant differences were demonstrated between TGA and TIA patients in relation to the control group, but no differences were found between patients with TGA and TIA. Our study suggests a vascular mechanism for TGA and that TGA could be considered a low risk TIA in most cases.

An unusual ureteric anomaly: uretero-synadelphia with ectopic opening into the urachus.

An extraordinary case is reported of "uretero-synadelphia" (a single Y-type ureteric tract for both kidneys) with ectopic opening into the bladder vertex. This case also showed an associated agenesis of the extrahepatic biliary ducts. The possible factors in the development of this anomaly are discussed. The term "synadelpho-ureterostomy" is proposed to describe the surgical techniques used to mimic these anomalies, in place of the more commonly accepted "trans-uretero-ureterostomy".
