We have detected an MMTV related transcript which is expressed in a spleen specific manner in BALB/cHeA mice. Using a recombinant inbred series between BALB/cHeA and STS/A mice (C X S RI series) we have identified RNA associated with the Mtv-3 locus of the STS/A strain. This transcript initiates at the same site in the MMTV LTR as already reported for Mtv-2 and Mtv-8. The novel spleen specific MMTV transcript in the BALB/cHeA strain has a different structure as compared to the transcripts associated with the Mtv-2, Mtv-3, or Mtv-8 loci. We have tentatively identified the Mtv-6 locus as the source of these unique transcripts.
The production, isolation, and characterization of an antibiotic substance from cultures of Pseudomonas fluorescens 2-79 (NRRL B-15132) is described. P. fluorescens 2-79 originally was isolated from the roots of wheat and is suppressive to the wheat root disease take-all caused by Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici. The antibiotic was isolated from potato glucose broth cultures of strain 2-79 by solvent extraction. It was purified by silica gel column chromatography and was a greenish yellow, needle-shaped crystal with a melting point of 242 degrees C (decomposition). It was soluble in methylene chloride, chloroform, acetone, 2 N sodium hydroxide, and 2 N hydrochloric acid and was insoluble in water, methanol, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, diethyl ether, carbon tetrachloride, hexane, and petroleum ether. On the basis of UV, infrared, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance, 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectral analysis, and elemental analysis, the structure of the antibiotic is proposed to be a dimer of phenazine carboxylic acid. Lithium aluminum hydride reduction of the antibiotic yielded hydroxymethyl phenazine as a major product which retained most of the biological characteristics of the parent molecule. There were no toxic symptoms when mice received this antibiotic by oral doses up to 464 mg/kg. The antibiotic showed excellent activity against several species of fungi, including the wheat pathogens Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, Rhizoctonia solani, and Pythium aristosporum; and it may have a role in suppression of take-all in vivo by strain 2-79.
Aerobic fermentation cultures of Streptomyces sp. produced an antifungal macrodiolide. This new antibiotic consists of two units of homononactic acid linked to form a cyclic diester. An unknown polypeptide was also isolated in trace quantities. The antibiotic with polypeptide complex showed high levels of antifungal activity compared with that of the macrodiolide alone. The macrodiolide also showed a stimulatory effect on some species of fungi. The production, purification, and characterization of these compounds are reported.

Our patient demonstrates why the diagnosis of myocardial rupture is often mistaken for an extension of a myocardial infarction. Our case further suggests, as supported in the literature, that myocardial rupture is not an abrupt event. With close monitoring in patients with high risks, it is possible, especially with use of echocardiograms, to make an early diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is made, aggressive surgical therapy should be undertaken. With the advances in cardiovascular surgery, the prognosis of cardiac rupture is vastly improved. Long-term prognosis for patients surviving surgical repair after myocardial rupture is excellent. However, one should keep in mind the importance of preventive therapy such as treatment of systolic hypertension on admission to the coronary care unit.

Injection of adrenalin or acetylcholine led to enhanced elaboration and release of neurosecretory materials (hyperactivity) in the hypothalamic neurosecretory system of the garden lizard. The hyperactivity apparently came down to the control level of activity at the 120 h stage of the experiment.

Tumour and metastatic phenotypes, the pattern of mouse mammary tumour virus (MMTV) integration and expression, and the expression of a metastasis associated gene, nm23, were examined in three mammary tumour cell subpopulations, 66, 168 and 4526. Tumour growth, host survival, metastatic aggressiveness, and the distribution of different cell types in metastasis resulting from mixed cell inocula were also analysed. The results of these studies indicated that the cell lines were distinguishable from each other both phenotypically and genotypically. However, a rearrangement of the mammary tumour specific protooncogene, int-1, caused by MMTV was found to be a unique characteristic of the cell line 4526. Therefore, int-1 was used as a stable marker to examine the genotype of the metastatic colonies that developed in mice bearing tumours of mixed cell inocula. Highly metastatic 4526 cells influenced the metastatic range of poorly metastatic 66 cells. Line 66 cells that normally colonize only to lungs were also found to colonize liver when inoculated together with the liver-metastasizing 4526 cells. This acquired metastatic phenotype of 66 cells was transient. On the contrary, mixed cell inocula of 4526 and non-metastatic 168 cells did not produce any colony of 168 cells. The metastatic aggressiveness of 4526 cells was inhibited by both 66 and 168 cells. Furthermore, the metastatic behaviour of mixed inocula differed depending on the relative abundance of the component populations in the mixtures. These findings suggest that interaction between cells of different metastatic phenotypes may result in changes of their metastatic behaviour.
There has been a growing interest during recent years in the role of free radicals and lipid-peroxidation at tissue-level for the causation of cancer and other age-related diseases like atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cataract etc. Free radicals and increased lipid peroxidation play a significant role for causation of human diseases by oxidative damage and functional degeneration of the tissues. Vitamin C, a well-known dietary antioxidant, and other enzymatic antioxidants like glutathione can protect the lipids of lipoproteins and other biomembranes against peroxidative damage by intercepting oxidants before they can attack the tissues. But cigarette smoking was found to affect the antioxidant protective action of Vitamin C, glutathione etc. A group of adult male smokers in this study were found to have lowered Vitamin 'C' & glutathione levels, but increased lipid-peroxide levels in their blood. Thus the increased pathogenicity of the smoking may also be due to indirect biochemical effect of enhanced oxidative stress by increased lipid-peroxidation and lowered Vitamin C & other antioxidants at tissue-level.
To study the trends of beneficiary coverage (pregnant and lactating women and children less than two years of age) for utilization of supplementary nutrition and health services in a rural block before and after the launch of a strategy to converge Health & Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) on a single day christened "Nutrition and Health Day" (NHD). It is a before and after intervention design in rural ICDS block Amarwada in district Chhindwada. As a part of intervention, NHD were organised on which convergent services of Health & ICDS were made available to the beneficiaries. On the weekly NHDs, uncooked supplementary nutrition for the week was distributed to pregnant and lactating mothers and children under two. The Health worker visited the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) and immunized children and pregnant women, distributed IFA, Vitamin A and provided health and nutrition education. The study assessed the impact of these interventions on the coverage rates of the services. Study was conducted between May 97 and March 98. The routine monitoring reports of the ICDS and Health System of the state government were used as study tools. The study sample comprised of AWC beneficiaries in the project area. The total population of the block was 89,476. Participation in the supplementary nutrition program (SNP) increased two to three folds in all categories of the target population. Immunization and Vitamin A coverage levels for children also showed an increase of about 3 and 5-8 times from baseline status respectively in a year's time. Among pregnant women, Tetanus Toxoid (TT) and Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) utilization rates have also shown two and five fold increase respectively.
A training programme was developed and implemented for 56 primary school teachers of Barasat II block in North 24 Parganas district as per their recommended roles and responsibilities in School health service. The methodology consisted of development of learning objectives, evaluation parameters (questionnaire and check list) and teaching-learning materials. This was followed by pre-training assessment, implementation of training and re-training and evaluation of the outcome 7 days and 3 months after initial training and re-training. One way analysis of variance revealed significant overall improvement of the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domain of learning of school teachers. The need of periodic re-inforcement training with adequate scope of practice under supervision were emphasized.
