New PPS brings mixed blessings.

With the start-up of the new outpatient prospective payment system a little more than a month away, hospitals are busy trying to determine how the PPS will affect their bottom lines. Joanne Tucker (left), a vice president at a California hospital, is among those who expect a revenue loss. But others say the changeover looks like a positive development. The biggest burden could be preparing for the system's implementation.

Profitability a matter of ownership status. For-profit systems see earnings rise, while not-for-profits lag.

Healthcare systems' earnings performance last year was tied to their ownership status. For-profits saw an increase in earnings even though revenue decreased slightly. But not-for-profits' margins declined, even though those systems posted a robust increase in revenue. Those are among the findings of Modern Healthcare's revamped "Hospital Systems Survey."

Rebuilding from the rubble.

Much of the nursing home industry lies in financial ruins today, but that hasn't stopped a small but growing number of start-ups from moving in. Former executives of some of the for-profit nursing home companies that have filed for bankruptcy protection are hoping to pick up the pieces. They're using their industry expertise to launch companies backed by venture capital.

Fiscally challenged. Psychiatric industry's hope is in consolidation, focusing services.

Psychiatric hospitals are closing in droves. Last year alone, at least 75 were shuttered, up sharply from the previous year. And psych hospitals collectively lost $254 million in 1998. To reverse the sector's fortunes, providers are focusing on consolidation and specialty services. "Mental health isn't glamorous," says David Moulthrop (left), CEO of a Wisconsin psych hospital. "But there is a future, though the pie has shrunk."
