[Validity of the ABAC II system: applicability in the hospital laboratory and verification of breakpoint concentrations in the determination of antibiotic sensitivity].

Two different sensitivity testing methods were evaluated on 183 bacterial strains of Gram-negative clinical isolates in relation to 13 antimicrobial drugs. Comparison between both methods: conventional technique of disk diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) and the automated ABAC breakpoints system, has shown a good agreement of the results (91.1%) according to several investigators. The authors analyze the role of ABAC system and its achievement in routine work of a medium bacteriological hospital laboratory.

[Rapid identification of Enterobacteriaceae: evaluation of 3 commercial systems].

We have compared three rapid systems for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae: MS-2, Rapid 20E, Micro-ID. These methods allows to identifications of bacteria within 4-5 hours. We have chosen API 20E as reference system; because it is normally used in the clinical microbiology laboratories. We have noted good agreement of concordance for MS-2, Micro-ID and Rapid 20E towards API 20E, respectively 95, 90, 84%. We have, moreover, analysed significative difference about three systems biochemical tests in comparison with the same of API 20E.

[Splenic cavernous hemangioma. Presentation of a clinical case].

Cavernous haemangioma of the spleen is extremely rare both as a spleen condition and as a vascular malformation. The observation of a seven year old boy with this unusual pathology led to a review of the literature on the subject. Brief remarks on symptoms, diagnosis and therapy are also presented.

[Identification of yeast-like fungi: evaluation of 4 commercial systems].

Four different commercial systems were compared to identify 110 medically important yeast-like fungi found out in as many pathologic materials in three Medical Centers. The systems were: a) API 20C Aux (Ayerst), which represented the reference method in conjunction with the germ-tube test, aggregates 19 carbohydrate substrates for assimilation reactions; b) Uni-Yeast Tek (Flow) and Mycotube (Roche) were used to indicate assimilation and fermentation of 7 carbohydrate substrates and to determine other biochemical tests; c) Candida-Check (Poli) was based on agglutination reaction by specific antisera. Comparative testing of the methods provided correct identifications for 99.1% by API 20C Aux, 95.4% by Candida-Check, 89.1% by Mycotube, 88.2% by Uni-Yeast Tek. The good concordance of the methods and their optimal manuality, rapidity, and economy suggest a wider diffusion in microbiological laboratories.
