[Familiarity, favorability, and cognitive complexity: integration of frequency of interaction hypothesis and vigilance hypothesis].

Previous studies using Bieri's 'cognitive complexity' score had supported 'vigilance hypothesis' which assumed that impressions of unfavorable persons were more complex than favorable persons. Thus, Bieri's measure seemed to be invalid because the findings were completely contrary to 'frequency of interaction hypothesis', presented in the theoretical framework of 'cognitive complexity', which assumed that impressions of familiar persons were more complex than unfamiliar persons, since people could be supposed to have more intimate acquaintance with favorable persons. The purpose of present study was to indicate the invalidity was caused by the research design where familiarity was dependent on favorability and to show that even Bieri's score could support 'interaction hypothesis', if one variables could be statistically orthogonized to the other. In each of two surveys reported, about two hundred female undergraduates completed a Rep test where they rated favorable and unfavorable persons on the basis of some dimensions which included favorability and familiarity. The results obtained through various regression analyses supported the above predictions. Moreover, it was revealed that, with favorability controlled, Bieri's score showed almost linear increases as familiarity increased, though the score of extremely unfamiliar persons was rather higher than the score the linear function could predict.

[A clinical evaluation of reconstruction methods after pancreatoduodenectomy from a view of fat digestion and absorption].

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reconstruction methods of modified Imanaga procedure and modified Child procedure from a point of fat digestion and absorption in patients who received pancreatoduodenectomy by using 13C-labelled medium chain fat. The 13CO2 abundances were elevated rapidly after oral ingestion of 13C-octanoic acid and 13C-trioctanoin in modified Imanaga procedure group. The peak 13CO2 abundances appeared earlier in modified Imanaga procedure group than in modified Child procedure group. No significant difference was seen between two groups in the percent recovery of 13CO2 in the breath after oral loading of 13C-octanoic acid. But modified Imanaga procedure group showed significantly higher recovery rate of 13CO2 of 13C-trioctanoin when compared to modified Child procedure group. These results suggest that modified Imanaga procedure would have a benefit for fat digestion and absorption after pancreatoduodenectomy.

Phytochrome-mediated activation of the gene for cytosolic glutamine-synthetase (GS1) during imbibition of photosensitive lettuce seeds.

A full-length cDNA encoding glutamine synthetase was isolated from a lambda gt11 library constructed from the poly(A)+ RNA isolated from lettuce seeds incubated under red light. The nucleotide sequence of the cDNA and the deduced sequence of amino acids showed a high degree of homology to those of the cytosol-type glutamine synthetase from other plants. Northern and dot-blot analyses of poly(A)+ RNA extracted from the seeds incubated under various light conditions showed that the activation of the gene for cytosolic glutamine-synthetase during imbibition of lettuce seeds is directly or indirectly regulated by phytochrome.

Gender differentials in poverty-mortality well-being.

"This paper explores the application of a life table approach to the analysis of poverty [in the United States]. After reviewing trends in gender differentials in poverty and mortality, we investigate an indicator of poverty-mortality well-being. The rationale for this approach is that to some extent poverty and mortality are causally interrelated phenomena which are both fundamental to well-being. The empirical results indicate that females are expected to live more years in poverty than are males, but females are expected to live more years in nonpoverty as well. Although the gender differential in poverty rates has increased to the disadvantage of females, and although most of the greater poverty of females cannot be attributed to their greater longevity, the gender differential in poverty-mortality well-being has nonetheless not deteriorated to the disadvantage of women in recent decades."

[A case of ossifying fibroma].

A case of ossifying fibroma of the maxillary left suspected as fibrous dysplasia was reported. The patient was a 21 year-old man complaining of a swelling of the gingiva at the left upper molar region. X-ray examination showed a border distinct imradiolucent, a ground glass appearance in partially at the left maxillary region. In the histological findings, the specimen showed a large number of comparatively ripe bone that suspected as Osteoma. At about 3 years postoperatively, no evidence of recurrent has appeared.

Psammoma bodies in metastatic carcinoma to the thyroid.

In a review of the 427 cases of thyroid with malignant neoplasm that were surgically resected at the Cancer Institute Hospital during the 10-yr period from 1978 to 1987, five cases of metastatic carcinoma to the thyroid were found. Psammoma bodies were histologically observed in three of the five cases. Primary thyroid carcinoma was highly suspected in the three cases, because psammoma bodies were detected during preoperative examinations that included image diagnosis and aspiration biopsy cytology. Thus, the presence of psammoma bodies in any kind of thyroid tumor should be carefully evaluated, both clinically and histologically, to ensure that the possibility of metastatic origin is not overlooked.

[Pathological aspects of gynecological malignancies--early stage cancers and borderline lesions].

Pathology of gynecological malignancies including cancers of the uterus and ovary were described with a particular focus on early stage cancers and borderline lesions. Histological criteria appeared in this paper are mentioned in accordance with The General Rules for Clinical and Pathological Management of Uterine Cervical Cancer and Uterine Body Cancer and WHO Classification of Ovarian Tumours. Carcinogenesis of the uterine and ovarian cancers were also discussed.

[A pathological study of primary malignant lymphomas of the thyroid].

Thirty cases of a primary malignant lymphoma (ML) have been studied clinicopathologically and immunohistochemically. The average age of the patients was 59.1 years, and the ratio of males to females was 1:1.7. According to the Kiel classification of MLs, 53.3% had a low grade malignancy and 46.7% were a high grade malignancy. Therefore, the number with a low or a high grade malignancy was almost equal. Most of the low grade malignancies were ML, centroblastic centrocytic, and most of the high grade malignancies were ML, lymphoblastic. From histopathological and immunohistochemical studies, most cases were considered to be of B-cell origin and two thirds of the cases were regarded as being of a follicular center cell origin. Prognosis was better than that of other MLs. Finally, MLs of the thyroid were found combined more frequently with chronic thyroiditis of the Hashimoto type than malignant epithelial neoplasms.

[Study of risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications following esophageal cancer surgery--multivariate statistical analysis].

In 91 patients undergoing resection and reconstruction of the esophagus for esophageal cancer, risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications were studied. In order to investigate these factors, multivariate statistical analysis was applied. The incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications was significantly higher in patients over 70 years of age who had poor renal function (PSP15' less than 25%) and had prolonged thoracotomy time (greater than 3 h) by Student's t test. In preoperative pulmonary functions, obstructive respiratory dysfunction (MMF, FEV1.0) correlated well with postoperative pulmonary complications. The analysis of each factor was, however, not enough to predict the risk of pulmonary complications following operation. Meanwhile, risk score (= 2.0 (age) + 1.0 (FVC) + 0.7 (MMF) + 1.5 (PSP15') + 1.8 (thoracotomy time) + 1.7 (postoperative RI] was obtained by multivariate statistical analysis. High incidence (greater than 80%) of pulmonary complications was observed in patients with risk score more than 5.0. It is suggested that using this risk score will be helpful for postoperative pulmonary care.

[A clinicopathologic evaluation of "depth" in cases of endometrial adenocarcinoma].

A total of 573 cases of endometrial adenocarcinomas, composed of patients that had been hysterectomized from 1949 to 1985 at the Cancer Institute Hospital in Tokyo, have been clinicopathologically investigated to evaluate the degree of the myometrial invasion, meaning the "Depth" as a postoperative prognostic factor of this type of cancer. These patients were classified into groups, depending on the depth of the invasion. The Depth d group, showing a myometrial invasional depth of over two-thirds of the uterine wall, revealed a rate of 61.3% of the lymph node metastasis positive cases, and accounted for 50.0% of the postoperative survivals. These values were statistically worse, when compared to those of the Depth a to c groups, which showed less invasional depth. Thus it was concluded that "Depth" is an important prognostic factor in cases of an endometrial adenocarcinoma.

[An autopsy case of quadruple carcinoma].

Discussed is a case of male cancer patient whose initial lesion was a transitional cell carcinoma of the left renal pelves. A bladder tumor (TCC) was subsequently found 6 months after a left nephro-ureterectomy. After treatment of these tumors, the patient remained well for 8 years. An inoperable lung cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) then developed 6 months prior to death. The patient died of an aneurysmal rupture of the ascending aorta. At autopsy, 2 latent carcinomas were identified, one in the prostate and the their in the thyroid gland. If the renal pelvic and the bladder tumors and the lung carcinomas were all independent, this would seem to be a case of six-fold carcinoma.

[Anesthetic management of adrenalectomy in a patient with aldosteronism complicated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy].

We had a rare patient for adrenalectomy who had aldosteronism complicated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). It has been suggested that aldosteronism could be the cause of HCM. The association is not clear in this case, but there is a possibility that myocardial hypertrophy was deteriorated with hypertension caused by aldosteronism. Two important points of the anesthetic management of a patient with HCM are (1) to prevent direct or reflex increases in contractility, and (2) to maintain adequate preload and afterload. In a case complicated with aldosteronism, there is a risk that a significant increase in peripheral vascular resistance following the manipulation of the adrenal gland would aggravate left ventricular pressure load, resulting in a marked decrease in cardiac output. Therefore, in such a case, vasodilators which are said to be poorly tolerated in a patient with HCM might be considered to facilitate the anesthetic management, provided that the vascular system is kept appropriately full. In this case, we employed enflurane-oxygen-nitrous oxide with fentanyl to keep deep levels of general anesthesia. Nitroglycerin (NTG) was used when arterial pressure increased suddenly with the manipulation of the adrenal gland. The effect of NTG is not definitely convincing since blood pressure returned to normal after adrenal excision. But the fact that pulmonary capillary wedge pressure decreased with infusion of NTG suggests improvement of hemodynamic function.

[Clinical study of the vulvar Paget's disease: report of 8 cases].

Between 1949 and 1987, 8 cases of the vulvar Paget's disease were treated at the Cancer Institute Hospital. These cases constituted 9.5% of the total number of the vulvar malignancies at our hospital during the same period. The clinicopathological findings were described. The average age was 73.3 years. The most frequent symptom was vulvar eczematous change with itching, which was seen in 7 cases (87.5%). About 5 years was required from onset of the disease until diagnosis. Vulvar cytologic examination revealed positive for cancer in 5 out of 8 cases (62.5%). One patient developed squamous cell carcinoma of the face. All patients underwent operation. Two patients had preoperative adjuvant chemotherapy by Bleomycin which was not effective histologically. Five patients had a underlying invasive tumor (62.5%) at initial therapy. The 5-year survival rate was 50.0%. Prognosis of the vulvar Paget's disease appears to be poor.

Wheat nuclear protein HBP-1 binds to the hexameric sequence in the promoter of various plant genes.

HBP-1 is a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein that interacts with the hexameric sequence ACGTCA, the putative cis-acting element of the wheat histone H3 gene. Gel mobility shift and DNase I footprint analyses showed that this protein interacts with homologous sequences in the regulatory regions for the transcription of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S RNA and nopaline synthase (NOS) genes, evidence that HBP-1 may bind to hexameric sequences in the regulatory regions of various genes. An HBP-1-like protein, indistinguishable from wheat HBP-1 in its the DNA-binding specificity, is present in sunflower nuclear extract, an indication that HBP-1-like DNA-binding proteins also exist in dicots.
