A retrospective study of 30 cases of mesiodens is presented. male preponderance of 1.5:1. was 64% mesiodens were impacted and 36% erupted. Inverted impacted mesiodens was seen in 62.5% of the impacted mesiodens. 66.6% cases had 2 mesiodens per case. The harmful effects on the dentition were mostly crowding, rotation, diastema and impacted permanent incisor.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the cause of temporomandibular ankylosis and the long-term results of gap arthroplasty with coronoidectomy followed by immediate postoperative jaw exercises as a treatment of the condition. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study evaluated the cause of temporomandibular joint ankylosis and the 36-month postoperative results of gap arthroplasty in 50 patients (62 joints). The patients were divided into 2 groups; group I (aged 0-12 years) consisted of 29 cases (24 unilateral and 5 bilateral; 34 joints); group II (aged 13-30 years) consisted of 21 cases (14 unilateral and 7 bilateral; 28 joints). A postoperative jaw opening exercise regimen was followed. Descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon signed rank test, and rank sum 2-sample (Mann-Whitney) tests were applied. RESULT: Trauma to the temporomandibular joint was documented as a major etiologic factor in 86% of cases. The 36-month postoperative mean maximal incisal opening was 30.62 mm (+/- 6.25 mm) for group I and 30.14 mm (+/- 3.9 mm) for group II. The P value in each group was highly significant for the Wilcoxon signed rank test; the Mann-Whitney test showed no difference between the groups, indicating that both groups had done well. The recurrence rate was 2%. CONCLUSION: Trauma is the major cause of temporomandibular joint ankylosis in India. The long-term functional results of gap arthroplasty are satisfactory and comparable to those obtained through use of other treatments. Postoperative exercises play a crucial role in lasting success.

The present trend in laparoscopic surgery is to make use of the Veress needle as an instrument for palpation of the abdominal cavity to secure "safe" blind introduction of the first trocar. The oxymoron is witness to the many mishaps experienced by the most daring surgeons who approach blindly each and every abdomen, irrespective of previous surgery. The "bayonet technique" heralded by the gynecological school oflaparoscopy has never been accepted by us, due to its inherent characteristic risk of injuries to the pelvic or retroperitoneal organs. Whenever the patient has had previous abdomino-pelvic surgery, the open laparoscopy technique is preferred with the Hasson's trocar either at the navel or at any other location, as deemed appropriate by the site of old incisions. Experience and laparoscopic findings have led us to enforce the principle that open laparoscopy should be instituted if any scar, even from previous Iaparoscopy, is present over the anterior abdominal wall. A variation in the technique for introduction of the Veress needle and safe execution of the pneumoperitoneum was devised to be used when the peritoneal cavity has not been violated surgically.
Primitive neuroectodermal tumor is primarily a central nervous system tumor. These tumors are generally manifest in infancy or early childhood. The following article reports a rare case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor in posterior maxilla in an adult. Treatment for primitive neuroectodermal tumor in extracranial sites in adults is not clearly defined in the literature. This case was treated by combined chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy, which failed to cause regression of the lesion.
The anticlastogenic activity of crude extract of garlic (Allium sativum L.) was studied in bone marrow cells of mice. Male laboratory-bred Swiss albino mice were given one of three concentrations of the freshly prepared extract (100 mg, 50 mg, and 25 mg/kg body weight) as a dietary supplement by gavage for 6 consecutive days. On the seventh day the mice were administered a single acute dose of two known clastogens, mitomycin C(1.5 mg/kg) and cyclophosphamide (25 mg/kg) or sodium arsenite (2.5 mg/kg), simultaneously with garlic extract. After 24 hr, chromosome preparations were made from the bone marrow cells. The endpoint studied were chromosomal aberrations and damaged cells. Garlic extract alone induced a low level of chromosomal damage. The clastogenicity of all three mutagens were reduced significantly in the animals which had been given garlic extract as dietary supplement. The extent of reduction was different for the three clastogens and may be attributed to the interaction with the different components of the extract.
A total of 488 blood samples from tribal as well as non-tribal donors of Bihar and West Bengal were analysed for presence of abnormal haemoglobin variants. Out of 488 samples ABO and Rh blood groups were studied in 468 samples. Predominance of group B was noted in both the tribal and non-tribal groups and absence of Rh(d) was noted in non-tribal population with the exception of the tribals where 4.42% Rh(d) gene was found. Incidence of haemoglobin E gene was very low in most cases but relatively higher in non-tribal populations, while the range of raised haemoglobin A2 varied from 5.84% to 8.80%.
The effects of 4 permitted food dyes, i.e., fast green FCF, indigo carmine, orange G and tartrazine, and the non-permitted dye metanil yellow on chromosomes of Allium cepa are reported. A significant increase in polyploid cells was observed in all cases. High doses of these dyes induced chromosome breaks and micronucleus formation. Although all dyes produced mitotic aberrations, metanil yellow and fast green FCF showed comparatively stronger clastogenic activity.
A survey of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier state of paid and voluntary blood donors in and around the city of Calcutta has been carried out. HBV carrier state is higher in paid donors (5.84%) than voluntary donors (1.79%). The nutritional status of paid donors as assessed by serum protein, immunoglobulin and cholesterol shows evidence of malnutrition and chronic infection. The socio-economic status of the prospective blood donors has an important bearing on the persistence of carrier state for HBV.

Total protein patterns of amniotic fluid samples of different age groups, following polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis, showed a wide range of variation in early pregnancy, but no two cases had identical banding, indenticating their genetic variability. An assessment has been made here of the total protein, albumin and transferrin patterns from normal fluids of different age groups by gel electrophoresis, in order to observe the genetic variations and relationship with foetal age, if any.
