A glycophospholipid (GPL) antigen isolated from Plasmodium falciparum culture supernatant has been tested for its antigenicity. Detection of malaria positive known blood samples and unknown field samples from endemic and non-endemic areas were compared. In this study laser light scattering immunoassay (LIA) was used for the detection of P. falciparum malaria. Test results of control (malaria negative samples from Surat) were compared with known positive samples and unknown malaria positive field samples. A positive correlation has been observed (97%) in falciparum positive samples from laboratory and unknown samples from endemic area (Haldwani) by LIA method using GPL antigen. From the results of the study it was found that GPL antigen has a better antigenic property and can detect almost all the cases of Pf malaria by LIA method.
Chelation therapy is a widely practised mode of treatment for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases all over the world. However, evidence for the utility of this therapy is limited and conflicting. We did a systematic review of the literature. The reference listings of the articles, obtained from a Pubmed search using relevant keywords, were searched for additional related articles. Most of the evidence supporting the use of EDTA chelation therapy is from case reports, small series or uncontrolled, open-label clinical trials. The published randomized controlled trials include few patients and their results are of limited value. Uncontrolled studies have reported symptomatic improvements but the few controlled trials suggest that these benefits are due to a placebo effect. The available data do not support the use of chelation in cardiovascular diseases. This therapy should be used only in the context of a research trial including patients who have failed to respond to conventional treatment.
Along with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is emerging as a major transfusion hazard. 22 cases of haemophilia (A 19, B 3) and 20 cases of thalassaemia (2 16, E(2) 4) constituted the study group. Patients tested for anti HCV (using third generation ELISA), HBsAg and antibodies to HIV I and II. Prevalence of anti HCV was 54.5% in haemophilics and 5% in thalassaemics. HBsAg was detected in 9.09% haemophilics and 5% thalassaemics. No anti HIV was detected in this cohort. Anti HCV seropositivity in haemophilics has increased compare to previous studies.
The serological activities of arabinogalactan from M. smegmatis and phenolic glycolipid-1 from M. leprae were examined by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay using sera from 88 patients with leprosy (44 treated and 44 untreated) and 45 normal healthy individuals. Both IgM and IgG type of antibodies were measured against these antigens. The results confirmed the previous observation that anti phenolic-glycolipid-1 IgM antibodies are higher in lepromatous leprosy cases than in normal individuals. However, with arabinogalactan, the ratio of IgM/IgG was more than one in normal individuals and less than one in untreated LL patients. Treated patients fell in both categories. Moreover, a reverse relationship was found between anti PGL-1 IgM titers and anti arabinogalactan IgM/IgG ratio.
A total of 1232 female subjects including 100 prostitutes from Calcutta and adjoining areas in the age group of 21-70 years were screened for cervical pathology according to the method of Papanicolaou. Of 1232 examined, 815 were found to have smears with normal cellular cytology (66.15%). The others were grouped into dysplasia (18.4%) and inflammatory (15.4%) according to the cytomorphological characteristics of the exfoliated cells. The findings though revealed more cases of cervical dysplasia in women with early marriage, early childbirth, high parity and multiple sexual partners, it failed to support the smegma theory of cervical carcinoma. This study also showed a number of inflammatory cervical smears in women coming from low socio-economic group.
Sixty-five cases were evaluated for silent myocardial ischaemia (SMI) by computerised treadmill test (TMT) and ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring (AEM). There were 59 males and 6 females. The cases were divided into GP-I-stable angina (35 cases) GP-II-stable angina after myocardial infarction (15 cases) and GP-III-asymptomatic (15 cases). Age in each group ranged from 36 years to 62 years (GP-I), 40 years to 68 years (GP-II) and 36 years to 48 years (GP-III). Conventional risk factors viz. hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, smoking and family history were assessed with a view to see their implication on SMI. 43 patients (62.2%) were found to have SMI including mixed episodes. Out of these 43, TMT was positive in 29 patients (67.4%), AEM was positive in 41 patients (95.3%) and both TMT and AEM were positive in 27 patients (62.7%). Correlative analysis between risk factors and SMI revealed that higher number of was associated with not only more positive TMT and AEM test along with increased episodes of SMI but also increased degree of ST-T depression. It was also found that AEM is more sensitive than TMT (80% Vs 48%) for diagnosing SMI (SED = 9.03%), though specificity of the tests is same (93.3%).
This study examines risk factors for attempted suicide in the general community. Data from the five-site NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Study were used to estimate lifetime prevalence and identify risk factors for suicide attempts. Occurrence of suicide attempts and lifetime diagnosis of psychiatric disorder were ascertained, using the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Of 18,571 adult respondents aged 18 and over, 2.9 percent reported that they had attempted suicide at some time in their lives. A weighted logistic regression model was constructed to ascertain significant (p less than .0028 with Bonferroni correction) risk factors for attempted suicide. Persons who had a lifetime diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder had the highest risk of attempted suicide (odds ratio [OR] = 8.4). Females (OR = 3.3), separated or divorced persons (OR = 2.5), Whites (OR = 1.7), persons in the two lowest socioeconomic quartiles (ORs = 2.2, 2.3), and respondents from the Los Angeles ECA (OR = 1.8) were also more likely to have attempted suicide. These findings contribute to an understanding of suicide and suicidal behavior in general populations, outside the clinical setting.

In an attempt to minimize the gastric ulcerogenicity of 6-methoxyindan-1-acetic acid and 5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-acetic acid exhibiting high anti-inflammatory activity, we synthesized their esters, amides and nitrile derivatives. It was found that the anti-inflammatory activity of ethyl esters were almost equal to those of parent acids and phenylbutazone while other derivatives were less potent. Those ethyl esters were also found to be much less ulcerogenic than phenylbutazone.
A series of indan-1 acids were synthesized and screened for anti-inflammatory activity. All the reported compounds showed varying degrees of anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenin-induced paw oedema test. They also exhibited appreciable antipyretic and analgesic activity in various animal test models. Among these compounds 6-methoxy-indan-1-acetic acid (compound 11) and 5,6-dimethoxy-indan-1-acetic acid (compound 12) showed activity profile close to that of phenylbutazone having prolonged action and lower toxicity than the latter.
The anti-inflammatory activity of 6-methoxyindan-1-acetic acid (1a) and 5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-acetic acid (1b) was evaluated in various acute, subacute and chronic models of inflammation. The results of these studies suggest that they have equal or slightly more anti-inflammatory activity than phenylbutazone, a standard anti-inflammatory drug. Of the two compounds, 5,6-dimethoxyindan-l-acetic acid appeared to be slightly more active than 6-methoxyindan-l-acetic acid.
