[Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) and carcinoembryonic antigen in gastrointestinal neoplasms. Comparison of markers].

CA 19-9, a new antigenic tumor marker for gastrointestinal tumors, has been assayed with Carcinoembriogenic antigen, in 90 healthy patients and 47 patients with gastric cancer (20) and colorectal cancer (27). A good specificity has been found for this antigen (97.7%). Its sensibility seems to be slightly superior to that of CEA. However the sensibility for tumors at Mo stage (38%) is indeed scarcely, on the contrary it clearly elevated for tumors at advanced stage (M1)(76%).

The effect of levamisole on peripheral T-lymphocytes of patients with malignant lymphomas.

The effect of various concentrations (0.015 - 10 micrograms/ml) of Levamisole (LMS) on the peripheral lymphocytes of patients with malignant lymphomas (ML) and normal donors was investigated in vitro. The parameters studied include: E rosettes forming cells (total T lymphocytes), active E rosettes (early T lymphocytes) and DNA synthesis induced by pitogens PHA and Con A. LMS improved significantly lymphocyte response both in patients with ML and normal donors when the cells were stimulated by Con A. In both groups no significant effect was observed on the response to PHA nor on the percentage of E-rosettes, whereas the mean number of active E rosettes was significantly increased on all concentrations of the drug. While in the normal subjects a positive statistical correlation between active E-rosettes and Con A response was observed, in patients with ML an inverse correlation was found. This latter correlation was partially reversed by LMS. These results indicate that LMS, both in normals and in patients with ML, interacts with a specific cell subset (early rosetting lymphocytes), with different functions in normal and pathological situations. The drug shows an effect on the immunological handicap of lymphocytes of patients with ML.

Endoscopy of ovarian factor sterility.

After an overview of normal ovarian morphology assessed during diagnostic laparoscopy, the typical patterns most frequently associated to ovarian factor sterility, observed in gonadal dysgenesis and dysfunction syndromes as LUF or follicular cysts, polycystic ovary, postinflammatory adhesions and endometriosis, are analyzed. Laparoscopic surgical procedures as ovarian biopsy and lysis of adhesions are briefly mentioned.

["In vitro" activity of ten antimicrobial agents against anaerobic bacteria. A collaborative study, 1999-2002].

The antimicrobial activity of ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam, cefoxitin, ceftriaxone, imipenem, piperacillin, piperacillin-tazobactam, clindamycin, metronidazole, and azitromycin was assesed against 166 strains of anaerobic bacteria recovered from eight hospitals in Buenos Aires. The strains studied were Bacteroides fragilis group (65), Fusobacterium spp. (26), Prevotella spp. (21), Porphyromonas spp. (10), Clostridium difficile (10), other clostridia (12), and gram-positive cocci (22). The MICs were determined by the agar dilution method according to NCCLS document M11-A5. Metronidazole and piperacillin-tazobactam were the most active antimicrobial agents tested and exhibited MIC90 values of < or = 2 microg/ml and < or = 4 microg/ml against gram-negative organisms, and < or = 2 microg/ml, and < or = 8 microg/ml against gram-positive organisms, respectively. Among beta-lactams the activity against gram-negative rods was in the following order: imipenem > piperacillin > cefoxitin > ceftriaxone > ampicillin. Among the gram-positive bacteria the decreased activity was: piperacillin > imipenem > cefoxitin > ceftriaxone > ampicillin. The majority of the species studied showed different degrees of resistance to clindamycin and azitromycin. Nevertheless, 90% of Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas spp. isolates were inhibited by 0.125 mg/ml of clindamycin and azitromycin, respectively.

[Curettage vs. hysteroscopic resection].

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of curettage vs hysteroscopic resection in the treatment of endometrial polyps. A group of 25 patients were examined and during surgery underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy, curettage of the uterine cavity, control hysteroscopy and resectoscopy in the event of residual polyps. Thirteen cases revealed the total persistence of the polyp after curettage and in 6 cases the polyp was only partially removed; the polyp was detached but not removed from the uterine cavity in 4 cases and the polyp was fully removed using the curette in only 2 cases. The considerable limits of curettage which emerge from this study appear to be linked to three main factors: the localization, nature and size of endometrial polyps. Curettage may therefore now be considered a method which has been surpassed in not only diagnostic but also therapeutic terms by hysteroscopic techniques.

[Role of lactose, arginine and lysine combination in fracture healing (an experimental study)].

L-arginine and L-lysine are essential amino acids which seem to possess some properties able to influence bone fractures healing. In fact, they seem to be involved not only in the increase of intestinal calcium adsorption but also in collagen synthesis, in insulin and growth hormone secretion and in osteoblastic activation. So, an experimental in vivo model was carried out by using 50 adult rabbits which, under general anaesthesia, were submitted to an osteotomy of the left fibula. Animals were divided into 5 groups and were daily treated with a mixture of lactose, L-arginine and L-lysine or with the only lactose (control group) at the same dosage as recommended for humans. They were sacrificed after 15, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days for radiological and histological studies. The results of the study showed that the pharmacological mixture containing L-arginine and L-lysine accelerates and ameliorates the healing processes and this positive effect was particularly evident from the 30th day after the osteotomy. We think that these results are linked not only to calcium metabolism but also to different biological properties which positively contribute to a good healing of bone fractures.
