Neurologic diseases associated with lymphosarcoma in ten dogs.

Lymphosarcoma was diagnosed in 10 dogs with initial signs referable to the nervous system. Six dogs had signs of spinal cord disease, 2 had signs of peripheral nerve disease, and 2 had signs of cranial disease. The diagnosis of lymphosarcoma involving ther nervous system was made prior to the death of each dog, and necropsy confirmed the clinical diagnosis in each case. The clinical diagnosis was based on the results of blood analysis, bone marrow examination, lymph node cytology, cerebrospinal fluid evaluation, and tumor biopsy.

[Adrenal gland cyst].

The authors present a case with a large pseudocyst (20 x 10 x 10 cm.) of the suprarenal gland containing tho liters of clear yellow liquid. It had pushed the right kidney entirely to the left retroperitoneum. On IVU there can be observed a crossed ectopia of the right kidney as well as the shadow of the tumorous formation in the right half of the abdomen. On angiography the right renal artery origins from its normal place, from the right side of aorta, but later it bands medially, crosses aorta over its front side and enters the right kidney, which is now placed under the left kidney. The left renal artery has a normal course. The branches of both arteries inside the kidneys are normal. The right suprarenal artery comes out together with the phrenical artery; it is pushed back in an arc-like form and ramifies over the avascular formation - the cyst. The operation confirmed the diagnosis. The suprarenal gland cyst was removed by a partial resection of the right suprarenal gland and nephropexy of the right kidney to the twelfth rib was done. IVU following the operation demonstrated a normal situation. There are also mentioned the difficulties in classification, pathohistology and pathogenesis of this illness.

Canine urethral pressure profile.

Urethral pressure profiles were recorded in seven normal female and six normal male dogs. Each dog was immobilized with xylazine, and a catheter (continuously infused with saline solution) was placed into the bladder through the urethra and withdrawn at a fixed rate. Pressure changes were recorded, and the resulting graphs provided values for pressures within the urethra. Nomenclature used to describe the urethral pressure profile was standardized according to the International Continence Society's recommenations. The maximum urethral closure pressures in the female dogs were between 13.0 and 46.0 mm of Hg (mean of 23.9 +/- SD 11.8 mm of Hg). There was a significant difference (P < 0.025) in the maximum urethral pressures of nulliparous female dogs less than 2 years of age when compared with those of older female dogs. The maximum urethral closure pressures in the male dogs were between 25.0 and 36.0 mm of Hg (mean of 28.3 +/- SD 4.0 mm of Hg).

Treatment of Huntington disease with a cholinergic agonist.

The involuntary movements of Huntington disease may be related to cholinergic hypofunction in the striatum. For this reason, the effect of a direct cholinergic agonist, arecoline, was studied in six patients with this disorder. Rather than improving the chorea, arecoline tended to exacerbate the choreic movements. Arecoline did produce significant alterations of blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature, probably by central cholinergic stimulation.

[Surgical treatment of ureterocele].

From 1971 the authors operated on 6 patients with ureterocoele type B (Uson), using a modified Hutch-Chisholm method. Following the removal of the ureterocoele and reconstruction of the detrusor muscle, the hiatus of the ureter and the vesicular wall, the ureter is placed on the reconstructed muscle whereas its free end is fixed to the trigone. Covering the ureter with vesical mucosa is not necessary; in cases with large ureterocoeles that is not even possible. The regenerative capacity of the vesical mucosa is great and rapid and covers the intravesicular part of the ureter without causing damage to the ureteral orifice or to its valvular function. In all 6 patients the results were good at the control examination 3 to 6 years postoperatively.

Oral health needs of elderly short-term patients in a geriatric department of a general hospital.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the realistic dental needs of an elderly short-stay patient in a geriatric department. One segment of the elderly population at risk for whom surveillance would appear extremely important are those admitted temporarily to the hospital for acute or acute-on-chronic care. Little has been written about the oral needs of such patients. The study population was comprised of 468 patients of a geriatric department in a medical center examined by a dentist trained in gerodontics. An evaluation of the results showed that 65.3% needed direct oral hygiene assistance. Only 16.4% are able to participate in oral hygiene instruction; a few of them--6.6%--had a need of prosthodontic treatment. A once-weekly screening program was required to handle the oral problems, mainly Candida infections. Close cooperation with the ward staff is essential in order to develop and promote good oral hygiene for this very frail elderly population.
