The use of emission spectrography for the analysis of small glass fragments (approximately 1 mg) is described. Levels of Al, Ba, Ca, Fe, Mg and Mn have been determined in approximately 200 samples, and with the exception of Ca their variation appears to be of value in the classification and/or discrimination of glass. The precision of the method has been studied and its accuracy determined by the analysis of standard glasses prepared in the laboratory.

Headache is a common emergency department complaint and has a broad differential diagnosis. Most commonly the headache is without serious underlying cause, but occasionally can be the manifestation of a more catastrophic illness. History may be the most important aspect in the evaluation of headache patients and careful attention to historical clues or atypical symptoms may point to a diagnosis. We present a patient with a first-time headache, which was ultimately found to be secondary to a carotid cavernous fistula. Historical features that require a more aggressive work-up of headache are discussed.
Recent research indicates that doctoral study is for many "an excessively painful rite of passage" for which an "indefensible human price is exacted." For mid-life women doctoral students in nursing and education doctoral programs, this human price is sometimes paid in the currency of loss of personal voice. Because they often assume leadership positions after graduation, it is a significant loss to the professions when these women's mature voices are lost or even temporarily silenced. This article describes the design, findings, evaluation, and implications of an emancipatory inquiry entitled "Gifted Women: Doctoral Study As Heroic Journey." Simultaneously a participatory research project and curricular innovation, this unique 18-month project joined facilitators and participants as coresearchers in a workshop and four reunions that integrated feminist process with expressive, esthetic approaches. The results of this emancipatory inquiry showed that viewing doctoral study as a heroic journey enlightened these mid-life women participants to reclaim their personal voices, empowered them with the support of a community of scholarly caring, and emancipated them to undertake personally meaningful and scholarly dissertation research.

With the shifting emphasis in the NHS towards quality assurance and consumerism, user satisfaction has become an important issue for mental health nurses to consider. This article provides some data from a survey of 516 psychiatric patients conducted by the authors on behalf of national MIND in 1990.
This article outlines the rationale behind an approach developed at the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre (NPCRDC) to improve patients' abilities to self-manage their conditions with the support of services provided by the NHS. The approach is systematic and requires involvement of patients in the development of information, changing access arrangements to health services and promoting a patient-centred approach to care. A programme of research and development is currently being undertaken at The University of Manchester by researchers based at NPCRDC to investigate the effectiveness of this approach. The evidence base for the strategy under investigation is discussed and proposals are made for the role of nurses as facilitators for the self-management agenda in the NHS.

Andrew Rogers discusses the high anxiety levels and high failure rates among those sitting the DC test for entry into nurse education. He goes on to describe a preparatory course developed at one school of nursing which aims to provide an early opportunity for candidates to discuss issues relating to nurse training. A mock test allows individuals to receive guidance on their exam performance and to lessen the degree of anxiety which the test itself can generate. Success rates rose among those who followed the preparatory course.
This workshop describes a 10-step sequence of transverse plane two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiographic views of the heart and great vessels that constitutes a basic standardized examination capable of being performed by a beginning practitioner.
