[Hepatic arterial embolisation. 35 cases (author's transl)].

Thirty five cases of hepatic arterial embolisation are reported. The analgesic effect in association with tumour pathology (27 cases) was virtually constant (80% of cases). Arterial embolisation should thus replace surgical disarterialisation in the management of malignant tumours of the liver. It improves the quality of survival in painful tumours, above all when they are hypervascularised. Two fatal complications as a result of the technique emphasise the absolute need to respect its contraindications: portal thrombosis, even segmental, or hepatic failure. Two cavernous haemangiomas and one angioma with arterioportal fistula complicated by haemobilia were also successfully embolised. Five traumatic vascular lesions, two of which resulted in severe haemobilia, also benefited from superselective embolisation.

Measurement of growth in children with renal insufficiency.

The serial measurement of stature, weight, skin-fold thickness, mean arm circumference, skeletal maturity, and where appropriate, stage of sexual development are recommended as suitable indices for assessing growth in children with kidney disease. Methods of expressing the data for evaluating the individual child are generally used methods. Emphasis is given to relating stature to bone age in evaluating growth potential. Methods for comparing growth rates in groups of children are less well-developed. Using standard deviation scores is recommended for comparing stature in two groups of children or in the same child observed at the end of two different regimens. Weight using ideal weight-for-height as reference from a group of children can be treated statistically. Data of skinfold thickness and arm circumference from two groups can be handled statistically only when the groups are comparable in age and sex.

[Therapeutic arterial embolization in hemobilia. Apropos of 3 cases].

Three patients with bleeding into the bile ducts were explored by angiography. Two of them (severe post-operative bleeding and following needle-biopsy of the liver) were completely cured by highly selective arterial embolus production. No definite diagnosis was established in the third case (liver angioma with large artero-portal fistula). It can be seen from these observations, that angiography is essential in patients with bleeding into the bile ducts. The reason is not to establish the diagnosis but to find the precise location of the lesion and, under certain conditions, to apply radical treatment by highly selective arterial embolus production.

[Effect of a polyvitamin preparation on the immune response to antibodies. Demonstration of the immunostimulating activity of propylene glycol].

Humoral antibody to sheep erythrocytes was studied by plaque forming cell and hemagglutinin assays in mice receiving a polyvitaminic preparation containing vitamins A, D, E, and C. A statistically significant increase in PFC on days 6, 12 and 18 after immunization, and an increase in hemagglutinin titers was observed in animals treated with this vitamin containing solution. These results are interpreted as an immunostimulating activity of the preparation. Nevertheless, as shown by the results obtained with each component injected separately, a major proportion of the immunostimulating activity seems to be related to propylene glycol, a simple compound contained as an hydrodispersant in the preparation. Further studies of the immunostimulating properties of propylene glycol are now in progress in our laboratory.

[Sub-adventitial traumatic rupture of the left renal artery (author's transl)].

On the basis of two cases of sub-adventitial traumatic rupture of the left renal artery, as well as data from the literature, the authors indicate the relative poverty of clinical signs of traumatic rupture of the renal arteries. They stress the value of early intravenous pyelography in lumbar trauma, with immediate arteriography in the presence of a non-functioning kidney, making conservative surgery possible.

Binding of human IgE immunoglobulin to rat mast cells. A study by means of three independent techniques.

The binding of human myeloma IgE immunoglobulin on rat mast cells was studied by three independent techniques. A mixed agglutination reaction with anti-IgE-coated Sephadex granules demonstrated that only human IgE-coated rat mast cells were clearly agglutinated. This binding is strong (50% agglutination) in 3 min and progresses for 30 min (95% agglutination). Autoradiographic studies with 125I-labelled human serum proteins demonstrated the selective formation of grains on mast cells incubated with labelled IgE. Upon action of anti-IgE antiserum on IgE-coated rat mast cells, the mast cells released up to 47.5% of their total histamine content in a fluorometric histamine assay. A relationship was established between sensitizing doses of human IgE and histamine release. These results bring evidence for a binding of human IgE on rat mast cells and imply the existence of receptors for this immunoglobulin on mast cell membrane.
