Normal range of motion of the hip, knee and ankle joints in male subjects, 30-40 years of age.

Studies of the normal range of joint motion in human adults are uncommon, and frequently used references are based on materials not immediately accessible. The present paper reports on ranges of motion in healthy male subjects, 30-40 years old, in a randomized sample from the population in the city of Göteborg. It is based on 210 hips, 180 knees and 192 ankle joints. Arcs of passive motion were measured by techniques suggested by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Significant differences were found between the obtained measurements and previous referenced studies. The differences can be due to the measurement procedure, difficulties in measurement technique, the patient material, and inter-individual variations. There was no statistically significant differences between the motions of the right and left side, and its is therefore suggested that a patient's healthy limb can be used for comparison with the affected side in the presence of disease or a lesion.

Chronic lateral instability of the ankle. A method of reconstruction using the Achilles tendon.

Reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligaments ad modum Støren, using the medial one third of the Achilles tendon as a nourished transplant is a relatively unknown procedure. Thirty patients operated on using this technique have been evaluated. The mean observation time was 4 years (range 1/2--16 years). All patients but one had a stable ankle joint and were satisfied. One was reoperated after sustaining a new injury 6 months after the original operation. The method described is a good alternative to other methods of ligamentous reconstruction. The procedure also stabilizes the subtalar joint and corrects recurrent subluxation of the peroneal tendons.

Major injuries in Norwegian football.

All Norwegian football players are insurance covered and most of the severe injuries occurring in Norwegian football are therefore reported to the Norwegian Football Association. Based on these reports a survey of major injuries in Norwegian football in the period 1970-1974 is given. This study has already led to recommendations to the Football Association in order to reduce the number of severe injuries. A more extensive registration form is now used which probably will give more and better information about injuries in Norwegian football in the future.

Compression of the suprascapular nerve after fracture of the scapular notch.

A 32-year-old man with a fracture of the scapular notch associated with a lesion of the suprascapular nerve is reported. A nerve decompression operation was performed 20 months after the injury with relief of pain. The possibility that residual disability following a fracture of the scapula can be due to a lesion of the suprascapular nerve is underlined. The value of X-ray examination with projections visualizing the notch and diagnostic local anaesthetic block of the nerve passing through the notch are emphasized. Primary wide resection of the scapular notch is a preferable procedure preventing recurrence of nerve compression symptoms.
