[Epidemic outbreak of tinea corporis due to Microsporum gypseum].

A small epidemic of tinea corporis due to M. gypseum is reported. There were 13 children affected, ages 1-15 years. These children belonged to 6 neighbouring families and all used a common "playground", an empty lot located nearby. Cultures were positive for M. gypseum in the 13 children and the agent was also isolated from 2 soils collected in the playing-ground. Soil isolates were classified as N. gypsea. Clinically, the lesions were circinated and had active borders, they were preferentially located in the trunk. Most children (8/13) had multiple lesions. These and other pertinent aspects are discussed in the text.

Determination of the growth curves of the mycelial and yeast forms of Paracoccidiodes brasiliensis.

The growth curves of 2 different strains of P. brasiliensis were determined. Cultures were made in a dialyzed trypticase soy broth and the growth assesed at selected intervals by means of viable cell counts. In the yeast form, both strains exhibited un uniform pattern of growth; the mycelial forms were also similar although one of the strains survived for a longer period of time. When the 2 yeast curves were compared with the mycelial ones, large differences were noticed. Thus, the mean survival time for the yeasts was 13.5 days while it was 50.25 days for the mycelia. During the exponential phase, the mean rate of growth was accelerated for the yeasts (0.110) in comparison with the one exhibited by the mycelia (0.0265). Irrespective of the form of growth and for both strains, death occurred abruptly, a few hours after a period when colony counts were high, indicating that the fugus was viable at the preceeding interval.

Isolation of fungi belonging to the genera Geotrichum and Trichosporum from human dermal lesions.

Isolates of Geotrichum and Trichosporum spp. obtained from patients with a variety of dermal lesions were studied. Among 2,202 cases examined, microorganisms of these genera were recovered from 100 (4,5%); there were 38 isolated of Geotrichum- and 62 of Trichosporum- spp. Most isolations were obtained from nails: 52 cases. The species most frequently found were T. beigelii (25 cases) and G. candidum (30 cases). In 50 of the patients, these fungi were isolated in pure culture, in an additional 40 Trichosporum spp. were found. Mixed cultures with C. albicans were observed in 28 patients, with other Candida spp. in 16 and with dermatophytes in 6. Among the patients whose isolations occurred in pure cultures, the number of colonies recovered was large in 20 cases, 1 with Geotrichum candidum - 19 with Trichosporum (16 T. beigelii, 3 T. capitatum). The relationship between the isolated yeast-like fungi and the dermal lesion was considered to be direct in these 20 patients.

Pathogenesis of paracoccidioidomycosis: a model based on the study of 46 patients.

Forty-six Paracoccidioidomycosis patients were studied with emphasis on lung pathology. It was found that the greatest clinical involvement of the reticuloendothelial system occurred in younger individuals. On the other hand, the frequency of tegumentary lesions was low in young patients and increased with age. Lung involvement was nearly always demonstrated when searched for and showed no relationship to the patient's age. In the young patients the disease was acute while in the older individuals its course was chronic. The findings from this study permitted formulation of a model for the pathogenesis of paracoccidioidomycosis in which the respiratory tract is accepted as the primary site of infection. Based on this model, a classification of the various forms of the entity is proposed.

The gamut of paracoccidioidomycosis.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis of importance in Latin America. Because of its polymorphic manifestations, it is not always suspected and patients are sometimes misdiagnosed. Case histories of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis are presented in order to illustrate its various manifestations, with emphasis on the primary pulmonary localization.

Lobomycosis. Report of the eighth Colombian case and review of the literature.

The eighth Colombian case of lobomycosis and the one hundredth in the world literature is reported here. The patient was a 38-year-old female who showed a bilobed mass on the left forearm which had appeared at the site from where a similar lesion had been excised 19 years previously. She had always lived in a rural area, located in the humid subtropical forest. The tissue reactions to the fungus as well as the fruitless attempts to culture it are described. An analysis of the relevant literature is made and suggestions for experimental animal models are given in the text.

The isolation of Botryodiplodia theobromae from a nail lesion.

Botryodiplodia theobromae not known to produce onychomycosis was repeatedly recovered from a healthy woman with evident lesions in a toe nail. Mycelial fragments were observed in the scales and the fungus was isolated in cycloheximide-free culture media. The report indicates that many fungi, hitherto considered non-pathogens, may still be able to colonize a vaiety of human tissues.

Chromomycosis in the toad (Bufo marinus) and a comparison of the etiologic agent with fungi causing human chromomycosis.

Of 75 toads (Bufo marinus) 2 were found infected by black molds. The internal organs of these animals had granulomatous lesions containing brown fungi identical to those found in human chromomycosis. Cultures gave rise to slow-growing black molds but all attempts to induce sporulation failed. The fungi did not grow at 36 degrees C or above and failed to hydrolyse gelatin or casein. Immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoresis revealed that both isolates were identical and shared common antigens with the recognized human pathogens P. pedrosoi, P. verrucosa and C. carrioni. The findings are compared with other reports of black mold infections in amphibians.

[Effect of phagocytosis in vitro on Paracoccidioides brasiliensis].

Peripheral leukocytes from 17 patients with paracoccidioidomycosis were mixed with yeast cells from Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Rhodotorula sp. to ascertain their phagocytic and lytic capacities. The role of circulating antibodies in the process was also investigated by the use of autologous serum. The phagocytic capacity of the leukocytes was found to be normal for both types of yeasts. However, in the presence of the patient's serum, the percentage of P. brasiliensis cells ingested was increased (P smaller than or equql to 0.02). Furthermore, in 70-5% of the cases the lytic process was increased and more P. brasiliensis cells were killed when such a serum was employed (P smaller than or equal to 0.0013). This increased effect was not recorded for Rhodotorula sp. cells, thus indicating specificity. The peripheral leukocytes from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis are not defective. However, the success of the phagocytic process is aided by the opsonic action of the specific antibodies in the patient's serum.

Characterization of the precipitin bands detected in the immunodiffusion test for paracoccidioidomycosis.

In order to characterize the precipitin bands detected in the immunodiffusion test for paracoccidioidomycosis, a study was undertaken in 54 patients with the disease. On the basis of the pattern of known control sera, the three commonly observed lines of precipitate were designated as 1, 2, and 3 according to their location in the immunodiffusion plate. At time of diagnosis, 28 of the patients exhibited all three bands, 16 gave two bands, and 10 showed only one precipitin line. Over 50 of the sera with three bands had high complement fixation titers (above 1:512), whereas those with one band exhibited lower titers. A similar picture was obtained with the quantitative agar-gel techniques, where titers of 1:64 and above were more commonly observed in sera with three precipitin lines. Follow-up studies carried out in 18 patients revealed that band 3 disappeared first, followed by band 2, and, finally, by band 1. At the end of 2 to 3 years, 85.7% of the patients had lost band 3, 75% band 2, and only 27.7% band 1. Cross-reactions with histoplasmin were found in eight patients who gave the M precipitin line with this antigen. It was found that the latter band and our paracoccidioidin band 3 fused, producing lines of identity. Bands 1 and 2 were specific. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Indirect fluorescent-antibody and quantitative agar-gel immunodiffusion tests for the serological diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis.

The value of various serological tests in the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis was studied. Quantitative agar-gel immunodiffusion and indirect immunofluorescent tests were performed, and the results were compared with those of complement fixation and qualitative agar-gel procedures. The quantitative immunodiffusion procedure was found to serve as the simplest and safest quantitative test that could be performed for evaluation purposes, whereas the indirect fluorescent-antibody test gave nonspecific reactions and, as such, proved unsuitable.
