Epithelia of endodermal derivation in teratomas.

This work is concerned with the histological features of endoderma-derived epithelia in a series of 48 benign teratomas. The intestine-type epithelium had the histochemical characteristics of that of the large intestine. It occasionally showed argentaffin cells, Paneth cells and accessory structures, such as a basement membrane, bundles of smooth muscle fibers and lymphoid aggregates including IgA-secreting plasma cells. In a teratoma, there was transitional-type epithelium. The respiratory-type epithelium included the basic cell types of the normotopic. It often rested on a basement membrane, and was occasionally surrounded by seromucous glands, cartilage plaques, muscle fibers and lymphoid aggregates.

Testis morphometry in varicocele.

This study was conducted to evaluate morphometrically the microscopic components of the testis in cases of varicocele, the leading cause of male infertility, with the aim to identify consistent differences from controls. In our specimens of patients with varicocele, the vascular and interstitial fractions, as well as the Leydig cell count, were significantly increased. Our data support the notion that the interstitium is the testicular compartment most consistently affected and that the damage to the tubules is erratic and probably late.

Testis biopsy for infertility: a comparative assessment of current score methods for the evaluation of the histological specimen.

The accuracy and usefulness of the score classifications most currently in use to assess testicular biopsies for infertility were comparatively evaluated in 40 consecutive specimens of the years 1979-1982. Our results suggested that score methods should be rejected and a comprehensive estimate of the morphological characteristics of the testis should be given, if no specific cause of damage can be recognized.
