The electron spin resonance spectrum of a suicidal fungus.

The electron spin resonance spectrum of a suicidal inositol auxotroph of Neurospora crassa, previously used as a model of cellular aging, exhibits a high-spin Fe(III) signal whose intensity increases as a function of the mutant's "senescence". Surprisingly, the intensity of the signal is further enhanced by the exogenous antioxidant nordihydroguaiaretic acid, which reportedly decreases the rate of senescence.

Dual-detector-post-column reactor system for the detection of isoenzymes separated by high-performance liquid chromatography. I. Description and theory.

We describe a dual-detector-post-column chromatographic reaction detector system that corrects for substances present in biological samples that interfere with the measurement of isoenzymes separated on a chromatographic column. The response observed at the detector in front of the reaction coil is mathematically dispersed, time transformed and subtracted from the detector behind the coil to produce a blank corrected chromatogram. The same computer program calculates peak areas and other chromatographic parameters such as height equivalent to a theoretical plate and retention time. In addition, we have evaluated the dispersion effects caused by various changes in our experimental system.

Interstate migrants in the United States: some social-economic differences by type of move;.

U.S. interstate migrants (over a five-year period) are separated into three groups: (a) those leaving state of birth; (b) those returning to state of birth; and (c) those outside state of birth at the beginning of the period and moving on to a third state by the end. Evidence is presented suggesting that the third group is particularly selective of persons with high social and economic status. The findings are linked to certain hypotheses about the changing role and function of migration in a highly developed country where the transition from a rural society based on agriculture has essentially been completed.

Environmental lead pollution in an urban soft-water area.

An investigation has been reported on the clinical and metabolic effects of lead acquired by soft domestic water from lead plumbing systems in 23 Glasgow households. The lead content of water from cold taps was up to 18 times the upper acceptable limit and was proportional to the amount of lead in the plumbing system. The blood lead of 71 inhabitants of these houses showed a significant positive correlation with water lead content. Delta-aminolaevulic acid dehydrase activity, an extremely sensitive indicator of lead exposure, showed a significant negative correlation with water-lead content. Atmospheric lead was within acceptable limits in all but one house and no significant correlation could be found with biochemical measurements. A small number of clinical abnormalities were found but could not be directly attributed to lead toxicity. The results of the study underline the possible danger to health of lead plumbing systems in soft-water regions.
