The effect of dexamethasone on borderline ocular hypertension.

The topical steroid testing with dexamethasone 0.1% (Decadron) of one eye of 36 specially selected borderline ocular hypertensive patients produced a positive response in 25%. Similar testing of the second eye of 4 monocular open angle glaucoma patients produced a positive response in 75%. The test was thought to provide guidance for closer observation of the positive reactors, indications for therapy, and a reduction in patient clinic visits.

Analysis of false-positive borderline diagnoses in a glaucoma detection program.

Various glaucoma tests were given to 465 patients from the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Tennessee College of Medicine. An average of approximately 1.5 false-positive tests was found in each of 122 borderline cases that were proved not to have glaucoma after a continuous follow-up of from three months to three years. The significance of these false-positive tests was pointed out; explanations were given for them; recommendations were offered for their reduction.
