Messenger ribonucleic acids from pig intestinal mucosa direct synthesis of calcium-binding protein in a cell-free translation system.

mRNA from pig duodenal mucosa directs synthesis, in a wheat-germ cell-free system, of two products precipitated by antiserum to pure calcium-binding protein. One of these products has a higher molecular weight than authentic calcium-binding protein, but, like the authentic protein, is heat-stable. The other protein co-migrates with pure calcium-binding protein on sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, is stable on heating to 70 degrees C for 15 min and alters its elution position on ion-exchange chromatography depending on whether Ca2+ is present in or absent from the elution buffer. The synthesized protein has these properties in common with authentic calcium-binding protein.

The effect of cigarette smoking on blood sugar, serum insulin and non esterified fatty acids in diabetic and non diabetic subjects.

The effect of cigarette smoking on carbohydrate metabolism has been investigated in 10 diabetic and 18 non-diabetic subjects. All were habitual smokers. Neither the fasting plasma sugar nor the plasma sugar response to an oral glucose load was significantly altered by smoking. Serum insulin, free fatty acids, cholesterol and triglyceride were measured in 10 non-diabetic patients, and were not significantly altered by smoking. It is concluded that in habitual smokers at least, cigarette smoking does not impair carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, it seems that smoking before or during oral glucose tolerance test is unlikely to influence the diagnostic value of the test.

Factor 8 and antibody levels in plasma fractions prepated by cryoprecipitation.

Most of the antibody activity of plasma was found to remain in the supernatant fraction following the preparation of factor-VIII-rich cryoprecipitates. The low level of antibody remaining in these cryoprecipitates indicated that they could safely be used as a source of factor VIII for replacement therapy. Washing the cryoprecipitates farther reduced their antibody titres without materially affecting their factor VIII content.

Fatal transfusion reaction due to Serratia marcescens.

A fatal blood transfusion reaction due to contamination of the blood by Serratia marcescens is described. The diagnosis and treatment of such cases is described briefly. The importance of teamwork in all concerned with blood transfusion is stressed.

Carers' literature review.

This paper gives a selected review of the available literature on the needs of informal carers in caring for dependent relatives in the community. The papers reviewed are primarily concerned with the type of support needed by carers and how they can be helped by health professionals. The implications of the findings from these papers and the recommendations made for improved care are discussed.
