[The histopathological aspects of the calcifying odontogenic cyst].

Calcifying odontogenic cyst is rare; about 140 cases have been described in the literature. The problem of the proper classification of the calcifying odontogenic cyst has been discussed almost since its identification. Recently it has been concluded that the group of lesions designated as calcifying odontogenic cyst contained two entities, a cyst and a neoplasm.

[Condensation of gutta percha after McSpadden].

The Authors have studied the efficacy of the sealing effect of thermomechanical compaction of guttapercha according to McSpadden with an in vitro analysis on undecalcified tooth sections and with a clinical evaluation of ten patients with periapical lesions. The analysis of the results has shown a good sealing capacity of the McSpadden technique.

Benign cementoblastoma: review of the literature and report of a case at an unusual location.

Benign cementoblastoma is a rare odontogenic tumour localized in the jaws of young people. Benign cementoblastoma has characteristic radiologic and microscopic features and it appears to be fused to the tooth roots. The most important differential diagnosis is-with a benign osteoblastoma. The tumor should be enucleated and the teeth extracted. This case represents only the third reported case of a benign cementoblastoma associated with a third molar.

[Bone resorption and cytokines: the role of IL-1 beta, TNF and lymphotoxin].

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-1 (IL-1) are soluble factors that play a pivotal role in acute and chronic inflammation. TNF is a 17 Kda protein mainly released by monocytes and macrophages and is a common mediator of toxic shock, cachexia and tumor necrosis. IL-1 was first described as a lymphocyte activating factor and it was then discovered that IL-1 has a number of other biological activities and that there are at least two major types of IL-1 (alpha and beta) which bind to the same receptor. Recently it has been shown that TNF and IL-1 beta have an important role in bone resorption.

[A comparative assessment of the capacity of 2 bleeding indices to represent the concentration of thromboxane B2 in the periodontal tissues].

Comparative assessment on the capability of two bleeding indexes to measure the concentration of thromboxane B2 in periodontal tissues. The aim of the study was to compare two bleeding indexes, the Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) and the Gingival Bleeding Time Index (BTI) in evaluating the intensity of inflammation in deep periodontal tissues measured by the level of thromboxane B2 in the tissues themselves. Results showed that both bleeding indexes were closely correlated to tissue inflammation but that of the two, BTI is more significantly correlated. On the basis of these findings, the authors hope to see the application of bleeding indexes in clinical and research studies which can offer a graduated assessment of bleeding, thus increasing the specificity of this important diagnostic sign.

[Ultrasonics in endodontics. Light microscope study].

The purpose of this study was to study the efficacy of an endodontic cleansing procedure to remove the pulp and the dentin from the root canal system with a new endodontic instrument proposed by J.M. Laurichesse, the Shaper.

[Concentration of thromboxane B2 in gingival tissues in relation to main clinical parameters of periodontal health].

Considering the role played by some metabolites of Arachidonic Acid in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease, the Authors have investigated on the existence of a relation between the Thromboxane B2 concentration in gingival tissues and the principal clinical Indices of periodontal health: Gingival Index, Plaque Index, pocket depth, and Bleeding Time Index. The results showed that just the bleeding Index resulted to be well related to the Thromboxane B2 tissue concentration and then to the level of inflammation of deep periodontal tissues. On the ground of these data the Authors underline the importance held by the bleeding index in the showing to the Clinician the therapy necessity of a periodontal site in order to prevent a possible future attachment loss.

[Clinical study on the prevalence of dental caries in patients with juvenile diabetes mellitus].

The authors present the results of a epidemiological transversal study concerning 26 type I diabetic patients: as a control have been observed 24 healthy subjects, similar for age and sex to the diabetic patients. The results show a higher incidence of caries in diabetic patients than in the healthy subjects; this is probably due to the high carbohydrates diet of the young patients.
