[Malignant lymphoma with epithelioid cells].

Authors studied a group of 6 cases of malignant lymphomas with epithelioid cells. Their additional common features were a variegated cell population, big admixture of T lymphocytes and rare elements reminding of Reed-Sternberg cells. The seventh case serving as a standard was Hodgkin's disease with a high content of epithelioid cells. According to phenotyping the group consisted of 3 peripheral T cell lymphomas of the type of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia (AILD) and single cases of centroblastic ML, T-rich B-cell lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. The latter diagnosis was settled after revision of a T-rich B-cell lymphoma. Some large cells were CD 20 and CD 30 positive. The classification was proved by autopsy. Authors tried to be more precise when classifying ML but they may be inapparent transitions among single types (e.g. between peripheral type of T cell lymphoma AILD type and AILD or between T-rich B-cell lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease with lymphocytic predominance). The patients were followed for a relatively short period. Four of them died in several months after diagnostic excision, two showed a conspicuous generalization at autopsy. The presence of epithelioid cells in ML may not be connected with a more moderate behaviour and better prognosis.

[Eosinophilic granulocytes and mastocytes in carcinoma of the uterine cervix].

Presence of eosinophilic granulocytes and of mast cells were simultaneously evaluated in 40 cases of uterine cervix carcinoma. Mutual relation of major admixture of both cell types in total volume of infiltration failed to be proved. Participation of mast cells seemed to be mostly constant; their bigger admixture in single cases was not related to the shortest survival. Substantially greater number of eosinophilic granulocytes occurred only in the longest survival cases.

Tumor-infiltrating cells and their possible prognostic significance.

1. The introduction presents the most important recent knowledge of tumor immunity. All the known concepts of tumor-infiltrating cells are summarized including the historical background of stromal reaction. Its possible significance in an assessment of prognosis of cancer patients is emphasized. 2. The method of evaluation of this reaction in bioptic preparations is proposed and verified in seven series of carcinomas. The evaluation was directed to quantity, quality and topography of tumor-infiltrating cells. The method is recommended to routine practice for rapid performance, easy applicability, and reproducibility. 3. Cell reaction was evaluated by standard methods in carcinoma of the oral cavity, stomach, larynx, lung, breast, uterine cervix, and kidney. Individual parameters of cell reaction were confronted with clinical data on survival of patients with the aim to determine the possibilities and limits of interpretation of this reaction as a useful prognostic marker. 4. A special attention has been paid to the role of mast cells infiltrating tumors in the course of cancerogenesis in both experimental and human systems. The changes of individual parameters of reaction of tumor-infiltrating cells after regional chemotherapy were studied. Application of histochemical enzymatic reactions in identification of tumor-infiltrating cells is also reported. 5. The final chapter appraises further prospects of the investigation of tumor-infiltrating cells. The factors affecting the variability of this reaction, mechanisms of interactions between tumor-infiltrating cells and the tumor, and utilization of immunohistologic methods employing monoclonal antibodies are discussed.

Antineoplastic Agents↗

Antiphlogistics in periodontology.

In 146 individuals with inflammatory periodontal disease the authors verified the therapeutical effect of Sanchelin (the mixture of sanguinarine and chelerythrine in 0.05% concentration) in gel (4% hydrogel carboxymethylcellulose) applied into pockets and in aqueous solution administered in the intrapapillar route. The effect of Sanchelin in solution was compared with the effect of 2% hydrocortison in the same way of administration. The clinical condition of periodontium and the quality of oral hygiene was evaluated by means of indexes and papillae were examined histologically. The authors demonstrated that Sanchelin in gel is an effective drug in treatment of inflammatory periodontal disease. They observed lesser effectivity when intrapapillar administration of Sanchelin in solution was used.

[Stromal reaction in carcinoma of the lungs].

A standard evaluation of the cellular infiltration in tumour stroma (stromal reaction) was performed in 114 cases of squamous carcinoma of the lung and related to the survival of patients. Features of prognostic importance seemed to be the prevailing eosinophilic leucocyte infiltration (noticed only in patients surviving 5 years) as well as the quantity of reaction. Rarely dominating plasmacytes represented a favourable feature in contrast to an unfavourable lack of macrophages.

[Morphologic correlates of antitumor immunity. VI. Macrophages in the stroma of carcinomas].

Number of macrophages as a part of stromal reaction was evaluated in a standard way in the carcinoma of oral cavity, stomach, breast, uterine cervix and lung. Findings were compared with the survival rates of patients. Lack of macrophages in stromal infiltration was a bad prognostic sign in the uterine and pulmonary carcinoma. The same correlation in the other carcinomas was not significant.

Carcinoma↗

[Morphologic correlates in antitumor immunity. VII. Plasmocytes in the stroma of carcinoma].

Prevalence of plasmacytes in stromal reaction was estimated in carcinoma of oral cavity, stomach, breast, uterine cervix and lung. Possible prognostic importance of the feature was evaluated. Predominance of plasmacytes was lacking in the stomach carcinoma. In oral, breast and uterine carcinomas it occurred without any correlation to survival rates. The lack of predominating plasmacytes in lung carcinomas was a bad prognostic sign. This reaction occurred only in groups with long survival rates.

[Mastocytes in the process of cancerogenesis. I. Study of experimental model systems].

Changing numbers of mast cells were observed in precancerous and cancerous lesions of the gut in mice treated by 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride. The study included 18 samples of abnormal and atypical epithelium, 14 samples of preinvasive carcinoma, 15 samples of infiltrative carcinoma, and 12 control samples from untreated mice. Carcinogenesis was accompanied by a significant increase of mast cell numbers culminating in preinvasive carcinoma. A decrease of mast cells followed in fully developed adenocarcinomas up to numbers comparable to but more variable than those found in abnormal and atypical epithelium.
