Structural and biochemical properties of the tendons have been studied in man and dogs. Macro-microscopical, histological, histochemical methods have been applied; the tendinous strength for tearing has been tried; elasticity and tissue pressure in places of stretching and pressing have been investigated. A close connection has been revealed between biochemical conditions of functioning of the tendinous parts and their structure. Absolute strength of the tendinous parts is proportional to the applied stretching force, though it is 4--5 times as great as the latter. Where the tendinous tissue is pressed, its relative strength decreases, nevertheless, deterioration of its biochemical properties is compensated by its enlargement quantitatively. As the lateral pressing increases, tendinous and osseous tissues are forming. Indices of the intraorganic tissue pressure are much greater in place of pressing.
Regeneration after the primary tendon suture under conditions of decreased, restored, and increased tissue pressure in the seam zone registered by needle pressure transducers was studied experimentally in dogs. Histological and histochemical investigations of the wound healing process demonstrated friable expansible tissue abundant with blood vessels to form in the damage zone when the tissue pressure was decreased; restoration of the original tissue pressure was accompanied by accelerated formation of tendon-like tissue in the wound diastasis; a rise in tissue pressure resulted in the formation of hyperregenerating scar with numerous comissures to the surrounding organs.
The structure of tendons in long and short human fibular muscles, in superficial and deep toe flexors of the dog hind paws has been studied histologically and histochemically. In the parts of tendons experienced pressing down, various degree of tendinous transformation into cartilaginous and osseous tissue has been revealed. The degree of transformation depends on the power of pressing factor and on the age of the individual. In the course of adaptive changes in these parts certain constructions appear that are oriented transversally to the tendinous fasciculi, but along the pressing vector and having the appearance of basophilic "cross-bars" and oxyphilic "columns". These constructions contain acidic mucopolysaccharides (glycosaminoglycans) of chondroitinsulfates of A, B, C types and keratansulfate. In the course of reconstruction of cartilaginous tissue into the osseous, avascular tissue transforms into the tissue rich in blood vessels.
