Psychometric evaluation of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory in college students.

The present study reports on the psychometric properties of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI; Turner et al., 1989a) in two nonclinical samples of college undergraduates. Exploratory principal-components analysis with varimax rotation replicated the five-factor solutions reported for the 32-item Social Phobia subscale (SP) in sample 1 (N = 200). Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the five-factor structure of the SP and the two-factor structure of the SPAI were appropriate for the second sample (N = 210) data. Coefficient alpha values were high for all the SP and the SPAI subscales. Furthermore, we examined the relations between the SPAI subscales and measures of social fear and anxiety, social desirability, and general psychopathology. Results support the research use of the SPAI in our undergraduate samples.

The pain behavior check list (PBCL): psychometric properties in a college sample.

The Pain Behavior Check List (PBCL) was designed to assess the frequency of four dimensions of pain behavior: distorted ambulation, affective distress, facial/audible expressions, and seeking help. This study evaluated theoretical factor structure, internal consistency, and construct validity of the PBCL in a nonclinical college sample. Results provided support for the four-factor oblique model, compared to the one-factor and the four-factor orthogonal models. The PBCL total and subscales showed satisfactory internal consistency. Support for convergent validity was demonstrated by high correlations between the PBCL and several measures of pain behavior and with other pain indices. In addition, results of the confirmatory factor analyses suggested that self-report measures of pain can be differentiated from self-report measures of anxiety and depression.

Schistosoma mansoni: characterization of p50, an immunophilin.

A 1.4-kb cDNA clone encoding a 50-kDa homologue of p59, a heat shock binding immunophilin, has been isolated from a Schistosoma mansoni cercariae cDNA library. We have designated this clone S. mansoni p50 (Smp50). From the sequence comparison, we speculate that Smp50 is similar in structural organization to other p59 proteins. As with other p59s, Smp50 also shows homology to various FK binding proteins (FKBPs). The amino acids in human FKBP12 which are proposed to be important for FK506 interaction are conserved in the schistosome protein. We have expressed and purified the recombinant protein (rSmp50) from Escherichia coli. rSmp50 demonstrated peptidyl-prolyl cis-transisomerase (PPIase) activity, typical of immunophilins. Western blot analysis of extracts from S. mansoni adult worms probed with rabbit polyclonal antisera, generated against the recombinant polypeptide, has indicated the presence of Smp50 in the parasite. The antisera did not cross-react with proteins from E. coli or HeLa cell extracts. All of the p59s characterized to date have been from vertebrate species. Therefore, our finding represents the first identification of the protein in an invertebrate system.

Systematic evaluation of psychometric properties of the Cognition Checklist with college students.

This study included revision and systematic examination of the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Cognition Checklist. Two separate samples of college undergraduates participated. Analysis showed that all the models reported previously in the literature fitted the data poorly for Sample 1 (n = 220). Principal components and maximum likelihood exploratory analyses of the responses of the 220 students yielded two moderately correlated factors. Using data from Sample 2 (n = 288), LISREL confirmatory factor analyses showed that the two-factor oblique model provided adequate fit to the observed data. Estimates of internal consistency were .88 and .71. Preliminary normative, convergent, and divergent validity data are reported. In addition, directions for research are discussed.

The HIV-associated risk behaviour among male drug abusers in Malaysia.

To examine the risk factors of HIV type-I infection among male drug addicts in Malaysia, a case-control study was conducted on inmates, aged 20-40 years, at a drug rehabilitation centre in January, 1994. Stratified random sampling was performed. A total of 87 cases and 261 controls, chosen by frequency matching for age and ethnicity, answered self-administered questionnaires. About 59.8% of the subjects administered drugs intravenously and of these, 71.2% shared needles. Practices significantly associated with HIV infection were needle-sharing (OR = 8.53; 95% CI = 3.36-5.52), sexual relationship with prostitutes (OR = 3.70; 95% CI = 2.10-6.56), homosexuality (OR = 4.05; 95% CI = 1.49-11.11) and non-condom use while having sex with prostitutes (OR = 2.27; 95% CI = 1.05-4.97).

The prevalence of goitre in remote inland versus coastal areas.

The study was conducted to compare the prevalence of goitre among Malays and Aborigines in remote inland rural areas to those in coastal areas. All subjects were examined thoroughly by an experienced endocrinologist for the presence of goitre. The overall goitre prevalence in coastal areas was 6.3%; 6.0% (4/67) of Aborigines and 6.7% (4/60) of Malays were affected. However, in remote inland areas, the prevalence of goitre was almost 5 times higher compared to coastal areas. The prevalence of goitre was 30.7% in Baling; 30.2% (19/63) Aborigines and 30.8% (92/299) Malays were affected. Iodine deficiency is the most likely cause for the high prevalence of goitre in the remote inland areas.

Validation of the Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency scale in adolescent samples.

The present study extended research on the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency scale (MAST). A mixed sample of 215 adolescents, aged 15 to 18 years, participated in the study. Exploratory principal-components analysis of the 30 MAST items provided support for the four-factor structure of the scale: attraction toward and repulsion by life and death. The MAST subscales showed satisfactory levels of internal consistency. Specific and subset of the MAST subscales were identified for differentiating among adolescents who differed in degrees of psychopathology and suicidal behavior. Correlational and regression analyses examined the relations among the MAST subscales and self-report measures of suicidal behavior, social desirability, and general psychopathology. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Validation of the Inventory of College Students' Recent Life Experiences in an American college sample.

The factor structure and psychometric properties of the Inventory of College Students' Recent Life Experiences (ICSRLE; Kohn, Lafreniere, & Gurevich, 1990) were investigated in a sample of 216 college undergraduates. LISREL confirmatory factor analyses supported the generalizability of the 49-item one-factor and 37-item seven-factor solutions to our undergraduate sample. The coefficients alpha for the ICSRLE subscales were satisfactory. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to examine gender differences on the ICSRLE items and subscale scores. Concurrent validity evidence was shown by the positive and significant correlations of the ICSRLE subscales with related measures of daily hassles. Correlational analyses, LISREL confirmatory factor analysis, and exploratory maximum-likelihood factor analyses revealed that the ICSRLE subscales may not be contaminated by general psychological symptoms.

The Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale: psychometric properties in a community sample.

This study investigated the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS). The PASS assesses four components of pain-related anxiety: cognitive, fear, escape/avoidance, and physiological. Confirmatory factor analyses provided support for both the one-factor and the four-factor structures reported for samples of clinic-referred pain patients. The alpha coefficients were high for the PASS subscales. Significant gender differences were obtained on the PASS total and subscale scores. Convergent and divergent validity estimates of the PASS were also assessed. Results may be used to evaluate the responses of clinic-referred pain patients.

Identification of Schistosoma mansoni antigens recognized by spleen cells of C57B1/6 mice immunized with ultraviolet-irradiated cercariae.

Spleen cells of C57B1/6 mice immunized twice with Schistosoma mansoni cercariae attenuated by ultraviolet irradiation proliferated and produced interleukin-(II)-2 and/or II-4 in response to both soluble schistosomular and adult worm antigens of 72-68, 60-62, 50, 45, 29.5 and 28 kDa. All of these bands, except the 45 kDa, were also recognized by serum antibodies in Western blotting.

Identification of Schistosoma mansoni antigens recognized by T cells of C57BL/6 mice immunized with gamma-irradiated cercariae.

Immunization of C57Bl/6 mice with gamma-irradiated Schistosoma mansoni cercariae induces highly significant protection against subsequent challenge with unattenuated living cercariae. The antigens that evoke T cell-mediated immunity in this model are vaccine antigen candidates since T lymphocytes mediate antibody-independent immune responses and control the production of most antibodies. To identify these antigens, spleen cells of mice immunized twice with gamma-irradiated cercariae were tested for proliferative responsiveness and production of interleukins (Il) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) following incubation with separated soluble schistosomular (SSA) and adult worm (SAWA) antigens in T cell western assays. Data obtained at 3, 4, 5, and 6 wk post-secondary immunization in 2 experiments indicated that SSA and SAWA bands of 62-60, 50, and 45 kDa reproducibly elicited T cell proliferation and production of Il-2, Il-4, and IFN-gamma by spleen cells from immunized, but not unimmunized, mice. Bands of 72-68, 29.5, and 28 kDa elicited proliferation and production of Il-2 and Il-4, but not IFN-gamma. Bands of 35-33 and 24 kDa induced either proliferation or Il production at some intervals.

The Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency Scale: psychometric characteristics in an American sample.

The Multi-Attitude Suicide Tendency Scale (MAST) was designed to assess suicidal tendencies in youth. This 30-item scale has four types of attitudes: attraction to life, repulsion by life, attraction to death, and repulsion by death. Normative, factor structure, and psychometric data were investigated with American youth with a range of suicidal ideations and behaviors. The reported factor structure was replicated with American youths. In addition, all four factor scales showed good reliability estimates. Finally, the relationships among the MAST factors and measures of suicidal behavior and ideation, social desirability, and general psychopathology were examined.

The Inventory of Negative Thoughts in Response to Pain: factor structure and psychometric properties in a college sample.

The psychometric properties of the Inventory of Negative Thoughts in Response to Pain (INTRP) were investigated in a sample of undergraduate students. Factor analysis identified three factors: negative self-statement, negative social cognition, and self-blame. Reliabilities of the factor scales were high. No significant gender differences were obtained on the factor scales. Correlations between the factor scales and the nine subscales of the Symptom Checklist 90R were positive and significant, except one. The results support the factor structure and reliability of the INTRP in a sample of college students.

The locus of dual-task interference: psychological refractory effects on movement-related brain potentials.

We sought to measure separately the motor potentials for each of 2 concurrent tasks and to use these measurements to identify the locus of dual-task interference. Lateralized readiness potentials (LRPs) were measured in the psychological refractory period paradigm, in which a separate response is required to each of 2 successive signals. As the interval between the signals decreased, the 2 reaction time (RT) tasks increasingly overlapped and the 2nd RT was prolonged. The LRP for the 2nd task was also delayed but maintained a constant temporal relation with the 2nd RT and sometimes preceded the 1st-task RT. The results indicate that (a) independent measures of the LRP can be obtained for each of 2 concurrent tasks, (b) slowing of the 2nd task was caused by a delay in processes that precede LRP onset, and (c) the 1st task may cease to interfere with the 2nd considerably before producing an overt response.

Further psychometric evaluation of the Fear Questionnaire: responses of college students.

This study presents evidence for the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Fear Questionnaire for college undergraduates. Fit indices of the 4- and 5-factor models identified previously were inadequate. Exploratory principal components analysis identified three factors, using data from Sample 1 (n = 208). LISREL confirmatory factor analyses supported generalizability of the three-factor model to Sample 2 (n = 200). Satisfactory reliability coefficients were obtained for the factor-derived subscales. Significant gender differences were obtained on 4 of the 15 items but not on the factor subscales. Finally, we examined the correlations between scores on the scale and on other measures of social anxiety, social desirability, and general psychological distress of the Brief Symptom Inventory. Present results suggest that the Fear Questionnaire is a valuable research instrument for a nonclinical sample.

Effect of gender and age on fasting serum growth hormone levels in normal subjects.

Fasting growth hormone (GH) level is an important reference level in dynamic tests of GH secretion. Other studies have demonstrated sex and age variation in the rate of GH secretion. We analysed fasting serum samples from 377 normal subjects (193 males and 184 females, age range 6 to 81 years old), using our in-house enzyme immunoassay. We found sex differences in fasting GH levels to be only significant in the prepubertal children (Tanner stage I), being higher in girls than in age-matched boys (p < 0.05). Both sexes showed age-dependent changes in fasting GH levels (p < 0.001); highest levels were achieved at puberty and subsequently declined with advancing age. Hence, the physiological sex difference and age-dependency in GH secretion can also be demonstrated in single fasting samples.

Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in malnutrition: preliminary results.

This is a report of a cross sectional study involving 3 groups of children, moderately malnourished (BMI < 15), mildly malnourished (BMI 15-18) and well nourished (BMI > 18) to determine the differences in hormonal and biochemical parameters between the groups. The children were of age range from 7-17 years old. The children were from the same area with exposure to the same food, drinking water and environment. There were significant differences in the nutritional indices between the three groups. No differences were observed in levels of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4) and T3:T4 ratio. Significant difference however was found in the TSH levels using highly sensitive IRMA TSH assays. Moderately malnourished children had higher TSH levels (p < 0.05) compared to mildly malnourished and well-nourished children. No difference was found between the mildly malnourished and well-nourished groups. There were no significant differences in serum cortisols done at similar times, fasting growth hormone and calcium. Serum alanine transminase (ALT) however was higher in moderately malnourished than in well-nourished children. Thus using highly sensitive IRMA TSH assays, we were able to detect differences in TSH levels even though T3, T4 and T3:T4 ratio, cortisol, growth hormone and calcium were normal, implying in moderately malnourished children, a higher TSH drive to maintain euthyroid state.

[Anthropometric measurements in Malay children from upper class families in Kuala Lumpur].

This study was done to determine the anthropometric measurement patterns of Malay children from wealthy families in Malaysia and to make a comparison with NCHS reference population. A population of 900 children aged between 3-12 years old from Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur (TDI), were examined but only 871 of them were eligible for the study. Weight, height, mid-arm circumference and skin fold thickness were measured. The increment pattern of anthropometric measurements of TDI children was quite similar to NCHS except for having a lower median weight for age and height for age. There was prepubescent increase in skin folds thickness in both sexes, followed by a midpubescent decrease and a late pubescent increase. The study indicated that Malay children from a wealthy background have growth rates comparable to children in the West, hence NCHS percentile charts are suitable as a reference for comparing the nutritional status of Malay children in Malaysia.
