[Pharmacological possibilities in treatment hypoacusis in children].

The purpose of this work was to present the dynamics of hearing thresholds and the progress in rehabilitation of hearing and speech according to the treatment applied and probable etiological factor of hypoacusis. Two groups of children were examined. The first group consisted of children with deep sensorineural hypoacusis together with central component of hypoacusis, whereas the second group included children with sudden occurrence of hypoacusis or detorioration of diminished hearing ability. The first group received a treatment with a drug stimulating the function of central nervous system, Cerebrolysin (Minden, D), whereas the other one underwent typical therapy applied in case of sudden deafness (mannitol, hydrocortison, vitamins, enzymes). Both the groups were subjected to objective examination of hearing before and after the treatment. The improvement in examination results in the first group was observed in 36%. In patients suffering from sudden deafness the improvement in hearing after treatment was found respectively in 30%.

Electromyography of cricopharyngeal muscles in patients with oesophageal speech.

Subject for the examination were 30 patients who during total laryngectomy had had two silver clips for haemostasis inserted into the cricopharyngeous muscle about 3 cm from the sewing place in the midline, facilitating the location of the muscle and the placing of a needle electrode. Twelve to 18 months after laryngectomy and phoniatric rehabilitation, electromyographic examinations were performed. Each EMG recording was evaluated as to amplitude, discharge frequency and time duration of muscle electric activity. EMG recordings made during deglutition and phonation proved dependences of cricopharyngeous muscle activity on quality of oesophageal voice production and higher activity of muscle during phonation than deglutition in patients who developed very good and good oesophageal speech.

[Władysław Ołtuszewski--organizer of the first Polish phoniatrics institute (in it's 100 year anniversary)].

On the occasion of 100's anniversary of first phoniatrics' department foundation in Poland--"The Warsaw Institute of Speech Deviation", the activity of dr med. Władysław Ołtuszewski its organizer and the pioneer of Polish phoniatrics is described. The main topics of his activities are referred in his book "About speech and its disorders" (1906). Dr Ołtuszewski's achievements in the popularization of the knowledge about speech disorders were strongly pointed out. His lectures were given not only for medical societies but also for the pedagogic ones.

Usefulness of acoustic studies on the differential diagnostics of organic and functional dysphonia.

Phoniatric and acoustic examinations were carried out in a group of 30 patients with dysphonia, including 15 with organic type and 15 with functional type. A complex phoniatric assessment offered the possibility to differentiate between these two groups of pathological voices. This was achieved also on the basis of acoustic analysis of the voice by extracting characteristics such as: formant frequency, Fo and its range, percentage of noise in the analysed verbal text, mean and maximum values of jitter. The possibility of differential diagnosis of these two different types of dysphonia in acoustic studies was confirmed by clinical examinations. The acoustic studies presented can be regarded as a new approach to a fast and sufficiently precise method in the screening diagnostics of dysphonia conditioned by growth of the vocal fold mass.

[Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uvula in a 5-year-old child].

A case of rhabdomyosarcoma embrionale uvulae in 5 years old girl was described. The child was treated at the beginning surgically, then chemotherapy was given according to schema IRS-III. After 2 years observation the child is in a good condition.

[A contribution to diagnosing receptive-expressive dysphasia].

Diagnosis of disturbances of speech and the language of the receptive-expressive type of dysphasia was described in 8-year-old child. These disturbances were found to be the problems in learning. Complex clinical evaluation of such cases was stressed as very important.

Aphasia, Broca↗

[Phlegmon of the neck after tonsillectomy].

A case of the neck phlegmon on the seventh day after the tonsillectomy due to recurrent peritonsillar abscesses was described. Intravenous antibiotic therapy (Amikacin) and drainage prevented complications was applied. The complete recovery was observed.

[Results of palatal, linguographic and phoniatric studies in patients with pseudoprogeny after cleft palate surgery].

In 27 patients with cleft palate and pseudoprogeny the osteotomy according to Le Fort I and in 7 patients the accessory oblique osteotomy were performed. The phoniatric evaluations as well as the palatal and linguographic examinations proved the amelioration of the articulation in the second zone. The dental occlusions were also better as well as the speech intelligibility.

[Ultrasonography of the tongue in the rehabilitation of speech articulation disorders].

There has been presented a possibility of application of ultrasound examination of the tongue in the diagnosis and phoniatric rehabilitation exemplified by exposing shapes of the lateral surface of the tongue during correct articulation of the Polish vowels and articulatory exercises in the system of visual feedback in a normally hearing child and in a deaf one.

[Ageusia as the aftereffect of oxyfedrine use].

Out of oxyfedrine++ side effects known up to the present (mild agitation, stupor, heat sensation, pains in the epigastrium++, skin allergy) 24 cases of ageusia appearing usually after 4 weeks of treatment with oxyfedrine++ were presented. Disturbances of taste are found to be unpleasant for patients, and result in remarkable exacerbation of their general feeling. The complaints subside completely after finishing treatment, and the time of taste disorder withdrawal is prolonged according to the time of oxyfedrine++ treatment.

[Objective topographic diagnosis of damage of the organ of hearing].

An analysis of the results of electrophysiologic examinations of hearing (impedance audiometry, BSER, MLR, SP) in 50 patients aged between 1 and 9 years perceptive bilateral hypoacusis reveals that the system of objective methods makes it possible not only the differentiation of cochlear and retrocochlear lesions, but also to demonstrate changes in upper part of the hearing tract. Electrophysiologic examinations of hearing help us to reveal the causes of failure in rehabilitation of speech and hearing and make possible to objectively study the conditions of hearing. In can be assumed that in the future combination of electrophysiologic methods with modern ways of imaging, changes in the nervous system will allow us to interpret by topographic diagnosis the results of EA examinations more deeply.

[Post-influenza parageusia].

A case of postinfluenzal qualitative taste disorders lasting over two years was described. After short treatment subjective symptoms subsided completely and the results of the gustometric tests normalized themselves.
