The authors report the case of a 30 year-old man, who had recently been to Africa, admitted due to fever and pain in the epigastrium and in the right hypocondrius. The evaluation led to the diagnosis of hepatic amebiasis. The patient was treated accordingly with success. The authors further review hepatic amebiasis, including the epidemiology, diagnostic means and ways of treatment, focusing on medical and surgical approaches and their controversies. The interest of the description of such a clinical case and the review that was made is derived from the current impact of globalization of the economy and its respective consequences due frequent trips to endemic countries. A detailed clinical history, including the epidemiology, is paramount for the suspicion of this diagnosis. Immediate treatment is mandatory, without which the patient may be at risk of serious complications.
The authors report two cases of Adams-Oliver syndrome in 2-year-old children characterized by aplasia cutis congenita and terminal congenital abnormalities of the limbs. The diagnosis was made at birth and the aplasia cutis was associated with extensive skull defects, exposing the dural sinuses. The differences between the two patients were essentially the extension and the severity of the scalp and limb osteo-cutaneous lesions, associated malformations of the central nervous system and complications. In one child we found focal hemimegalencephaly of the right hemisphere and in the other one the syndrome was complicated by encephaloclastic cerebral lesions and encephalic herniation. Both children have survived, but the diagnosis of central nervous system malformations and the encephaloclastic lesions associated modified the initial prognosis and the future outcome conspicuously.

Sixty patients with chronic calcifying pancreatitis (CCP) of alcoholic etiology have been submitted to liver biopsy: in 44 cases the fragment was obtained during surgery, in four cases under laparoscopy, in five during necropsy, in two blind percutaneous biopsy and both surgical and laparoscopic in two cases. Cirrhosis was demonstrated in eight patients (13,3%). The authors emphasises the necessity in patients with alcoholic CCP.
A retrospective study of the newborns who were submitted to mechanical ventilation at the Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit was made between July 1991 and June 1994. Mechanical ventilation in such a unit should be transitory and not exceed 24 hours. Information concerning pregnancy, labour, neonates, type of ventilation and its problems was gathered. Forty seven neonates were ventilated. The average ventilation time was six hours (1-20 hours). The main cause of ventilation was hyaline membrane disease which occurred in 24% of all cases. Mortality observed was 16.6% and some sequellae were registered which were related not only to ventilation but also to the basic pathology in 26% of cases.
