[Long-term outcome of surgically treated peptic ulcer. Review of a series of 419 patients operated for peptic ulcer].

The authors report an analysis of 419 cases of operated peptic ulcer. 68.78% of patients had a mean follow-up of 4 years. After clinical and endoscopic examination, the results of the survey were assessed on the basis of various parameters, which demonstrated that the results of surgery were related to socio-occupational problems, smoking, the site of the ulcer, the stage, the history of the ulcer prior to the operation, the conditions of the operation and obviously the surgical technique used.

[Neonatal hydrocolpos with distal vaginal atresia. Apropos of 2 cases].

Two cases of neonatal hydrocolpos due to distal vaginal atresia is reported where hydro-vaginal distension produced respiratory distress and bowel obstruction radiologic and ultrasonic studies established the diagnostic of hydrocolpos surgery combining abdomino-perineal approaches was successfully done. In this occasion the authors emphasize the characteristics of this abnormality with review of literature and insist on the major interest of prenatal diagnostic in taking early infants.

[Posterior vertical lumbotomy in pediatric practice. Apropos of a series of 294 cases].

The study involves 294 cases. Essentials indications of posterior approach were for pelvic stones or lumbar ureteral stones 198 cases. Theres used this approach for abnormalities in the uretero-pelvic-jun (32 cases) and some staghorn srones (24 cases). The lateral posterior vertical lumbotomy passesses the advantage over classical lateral lumbotomy of being less disturbing to muscle, being less painful postoperatively stay.

Evaluation of the effect of continuous infusion recombinant interleukin-2 (bioleukin) on peripheral blood leucocytes of patients with terminal malignancy.

Seventeen patients with terminal malignancy have been entered into a sequential investigation of two doses of continuous infusion recombinant interleukin-2 (bioleukin) given in the setting of a general ward. After an initial experience of a dose of 300 micrograms m-2 in eight patients the remainder received 400 micrograms m-2. Temporary interruption of treatment at the first sign of any serious toxicity led to rapid resolution of side-effects. No patient needed intensive care support, although nine of 17 required temporary interruption of infusion, lasting on average 4 h. Median lymphocyte rebound on day 14 was 3.6 times the pre-treatment level. It remained above pre-treatment levels in four of five patients who had no shown disease progression at day 56 after more than 28 days off treatment. Minor responses occurred in five patients, lasting on average 4 months.

[Hydatid cyst of the lung in children. Apropos of 643 cases].

Six hundred forty-three lung hydatic cysts were observed during a 20-year-period (1967-1986) in the Children's Hospital of Tunis. The mean age of the patients was 5 years (2-15 years) and sex ratio 1.6. 91.2% of the patients had a single cyst, 8.8% had multiple cysts. The association of lung and liver localisations was the one most commonly observed (10%). Intra-pleural rupture of the cyst occurred in 3 cases and intra-bronchial rupture (vomica) in 5 cases. 653 thoracotomies were performed for 710 cystectomies, 3 lobectomies and one pneumonectomy. The results are excellent with a 3% post-surgical morbidity and a 0.5% mortality. Nevertheless, hydatic disease is a serious public health problem in endemic areas.

Modulatory anti-T antibody on mature human lymphocytes.

A monoclonal antibody developed in our laboratory, designated AN1, was investigated using in vitro cellular techniques. We found that this antibody modulates cell activation depending on the stimulatory signal used. Autologous and allogeneic MLR or MNC activated by mitogens like PHA and antigen like PPD, are all inhibited by the antibody. The inhibition takes place at an early stage of the cell activation pathway and cannot be reversed by exogenously added IL-2. The MNC activated with phorbol esters like TPA, on the other hand, showed enhancement in response to this antibody, whereas OKT3-activated cells are unaffected. This antibody is also found to inhibit specific CTL but has no affects on NK activity. The tissue distribution of the antigen(s) detected by our antibody showed that it is specific for mature unactivated human T cells and furthermore the target antigen(s) disappeared as a result of cell activation. The implications of these findings are discussed.

The reproducibility of electromyographic recordings of the masseter muscle in humans.

An investigation was undertaken into the reproducibility of electromyograms of masseter muscles in five human subjects. Under standardized conditions, integrated electromyographic recordings were taken during three sessions on each of 5 days. Analysis of variance showed that at the 0-05 probability level the results were reproducible for each subject not only during the same day but also between days.
