Current physical activity is related to bone mineral density in males but not in females.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between high-, medium-, and low-impact physical activity in males and females at the time of peak bone mineral density in young adulthood. The cohort consisted of 62 male medical students (aged 28.1 +/- 3.9) and 62 female medical students (aged 25.1 +/- 3.9). The bone mineral density (aBMD, g/cm (2)) of the total body, femoral neck, and lumbar spine, and the bone mineral content (BMC, grams) and area (cm (2)) of the femoral neck and lumbar spine was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Volumetric BMD (vBMD, mg/cm (3)) of the femoral neck and lumbar spine was estimated. The total amount of physical activity per week, which was recorded in a questionnaire, was divided into high-impact, medium-impact, and low-impact activity. In the male cohort, hours of high-impact physical activity per week was associated with aBMD and BMC of all sites (r=0.27 - 0.53, p<0.05) and bone area of the femoral neck (r=0.38, p<0.01). Total amount of physical activity per week was associated with aBMD of the total body and femoral neck, BMC of femoral neck and lumbar spine, femoral neck vBMD, and the lumbar spine area (p<0.05 for all). Using multiple linear regression, high-impact physical activity was independently associated with aBMD (beta=0.27, p<0.05) and BMC (beta=0.34, p<0.01) of the femoral neck. In the female cohort there was no association between amount or type of physical activity to aBMD, BMC, vBMD, or the bone area of any site. Instead body weight, lean body mass, or fat mass were significantly related to aBMD and all BMC sites in this group. The results of the present study suggest that present physical activity level has a stronger relation to different aspects of bone mass in the male compared to the female adult skeleton.

Relationship between vitamin D metabolites and bone mineral density in young males: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between vitamin D analogs and peak bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm(2)) in young men. The cohort consisted of 78 healthy young males with a mean age of 22.6 years at baseline. BMD of the total body, hip, and spine and lean body mass were measured at baseline and at follow-up 2 years later. Blood samples were assayed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D(2) (25OHD(2)), 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) (25OHD(3)), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) at baseline using high-performance liquid chromatography. Levels of 25OHD(3) significantly correlated to BMD at all sites and to lean body mass (r = 0.23-0.35, P < 0.05). In contrast, levels of 25OHD(2) significantly negatively correlated with BMD of the total body (r = -0.28, P = 0.01) and spine (r = -0.27, P = 0.02). BMD was then adjusted for the influence of age, body weight, body height, and physical activity (hours/week). Level of 25OHD(3) was then found to be an independent predictor of BMD of the total body (beta = 0.24, P = 0.03) and spine (beta = 0.25, P = 0.03), while level of 25OHD(2) was an independent negative predictor at the same sites (beta = -0.23 for both, P = 0.03). There was a negative association between levels of 25OHD(3) and 25OHD(2) (r = -0.31, P = 0.006). In summary, our novel results suggest an inverse relationship between 25OHD(3) and 25OHD(2) and an opposite relationship of these vitamin D analogs to BMD in young men.

An alternative cytokinin biosynthesis pathway.

Studies of de novo cytokinin biosynthesis in isopentenyltransferase (ipt)-transformed Arabidopsis thaliana, involving in vivo deuterium labeling and mass spectrometry, showed that the biosynthetic rate of zeatinriboside-5'-monophosphate was around 66-fold higher than that of isopentenyladenosine-5'-monophosphate (iPMP), the proposed primary product of the Agrobacterium ipt. Double tracer analysis, using [(2)H(6)] isopentenyladenosine and deuterium oxide, provided evidence for an alternative, iPMP-independent, biosynthetic pathway for zeatin-type cytokinins, present in both ipt-expressing and wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana. Reduction of the biosynthetic flux in the alternative pathway by use of mevastatin, an inhibitor for 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase, indicated a terpenoid origin for the side-chain precursor of the iPMP independent pathway.

[Results of a primary health care study on alcohol: 17 per cent of men, 8 per cent of women were probable heavy consumers].

A questionnaire study designed to elicit an impression of the proportion of heavy drinkers among primary care patients, carried out at five primary facilities in Västerbotten County, showed 12 per cent of the patients (17% of the men, 8% of the women) to be probable heavy alcohol consumers. This emphasises the strategically advantageous position of primary care facilities with a view to early intervention. Age was found to be a significant determinant of alcohol consumption, but not place of residence or the reason for consulting.
