[Lipid parameters in a homogeneous population sample in relation to age and sex].

The authors have examined the total cholesterol, the HDL cholesterol, the LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and the HDL cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio on 313 men and 305 women divided into groups in relation with age (40 years, 40-60 years, 60 years). Significant differences have emerged comparing these different subgroups as regards the considered parameters. About examined population, we have observed higher value of all principal seric lipids than national media. Implications of these data in the evaluation of cardiovascular disease are discussed.

Maternal and cord plasma cortisol and aldosterone levels at delivery, in various ethnic groups in Israel. Preliminary report.

This study was carried out to evaluate the maternal venous and umbilical cord blood levels of cortisol and aldosterone at spontaneous delivery in three ethnic groups in Israel (Ashkenazic, Sepharadic and Oriental) (n = 47). The mean maternal plasma cortisol level of the Sephardic group was significantly lower than were those of the other groups (P less than 0.01). Cord plasma cortisol level was similar in the three groups. No statistical differences were noted between the maternal and cord plasma cortisol levels in the three groups. The mean maternal and cord plasma aldosterone level was lowest in the Sephardic group. There was a good correlation of maternal and cord aldosterone levels in all of the groups. A positive statistical correlation detected in our study between levels of maternal plasma cortisol and cord plasma aldosterone is of interest, but needs more investigation before an appropriate explanation can be formulated. The ethnic differences in hormonal changes at birth observed in this study are preliminary results, and further investigations are being conducted to clarify these findings.

Changes in menstrual blood loss and libido after different methods of tubal ligation.

A study was carried out to investigate the menstrual blood loss and changes in sexual life following two methods of tubal sterilization, the Pomeroy procedure and fimbriectomy, as compared with a control group having undergone Cesarean section alone. Results support the approach that hysterectomy be performed in older women, over the age of 40, and fimbriectomy in younger patients, in whom further pregnancy or reanastomosis of the Fallopian tube is absolutely contraindicated.

Hereditary ovarian cancer.

Hereditary ovarian cancer occurs rarely in the general population but may appear in up to 85% of the offspring of affected women. Pedigree analysis remains the main diagnostic tool. Aberrations of BRCA-1 gene, located on 17q12-21, are considered to be the reason for the genetic expression of ovarian cancer. Hereditary ovarian cancer is characterized by bilateralism, usually stage III, at operative diagnosis, mostly serous cystadenocarcinoma type and relatively early age at onset. Hence, early follow-up is recommended in high risk patients. Prophylactic removal of the uterus and the adnexae is indicated in patients at risk.

Rosai-Dorfman syndrome with extranodal localizations and response to glucocorticoids: a case report.

A case of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai-Dorfman syndrome) in a 42-year-old man is described. The disease involved the respiratory tract and skeletal apparatus, led to considerable general impairment and was unusually responsive to glucocorticoids. Molecular and immunophenotype analysis seem to confirm the reactive nature of a disorder that shows profound T-cell immunodeficiency.
