Age-related increase in methylation of ribosomal genes and inactivation of chromosome-specific rRNA gene clusters in mouse.

An age-related increase in DNA methylation of the multicopy 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA genes was found in CBA/Ca mice beginning between 6 and 18 months of age at the 5' end of these genes in liver, brain and spleen. The highest level of age-associated hypermethylation was mapped to the proximal 5' spacer domain. Silver staining of actively transcribing ribosomal genes in metaphase chromosomes from stimulated spleen cells provided cytological evidence that these mice have 3 rRNA cistrons located on chromosomes 15, 16, and 18. The ribosomal gene cluster located on chromosome 16 was preferentially inactivated in older animals. Exposure of spleen cells from older individuals to 5-azacytidine appeared to both reactivate ribosomal gene clusters and reduce rRNA gene methylation.

Gravidas' responses to realtime ultrasound fetal image.

One hundred women in various stages of pregnancy were questioned before and after viewing their fetuses through realtime ultrasonographic scanning. For the majority of these women, perceptions of the fetus changed following this visualization. Viewing gave some a greater sense of attachment to the fetus, but for a few, this attachment also gave a greater sense of vulnerability with regard to the outcome of the pregnancy.

RCN guideline on the management of leg ulcers.

The treatment of uncomplicated leg ulcers has not always been carried out effectively. In this article, the authors introduce an evidence-based clinical guideline for the treatment of uncomplicated leg ulcers and highlight some of the key recommendations. This is to be launched at Nursing Standard's conference on evidence-based nursing this week.

The management of venous leg ulcers: a project to improve care.

This article describes a two-year project to develop resources for the improvement of leg ulcer management. It was felt that an audit tool and complementary resources, such as a resource pack and implementation guide, could help practitioners to implement clinical guidelines on leg ulcer management in practice. The audit results from the pilot project are briefly described and discussed in terms of informing future work.

Polaroid imaging at an archaeological site in Peru.

This article describes the use of Polaroid photography as an adjunct to conventional radiography at a remote archaeological site in northern Peru. The Polaroid system provided several important benefits, including the ability to produce images in 90 seconds without a darkroom or wet processing. This enabled researchers to examine specimens ad hoc, test exposures in the field and determine the most appropriate position to demonstrate internal structures.

Vaccinating Asian Pacific Islander children against hepatitis B: ethnic-specific influences and barriers.

PURPOSE: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a known cause of liver cancer, especially among Asian and Pacific Islanders (API). Despite national recommendations and school entry requirements for vaccination, many children are not fully vaccinated with the Hepatitis B vaccine (Hep B) before entering school. The purpose of this study was to measure ethnic group-specific hepatitis B vaccination rates among school-aged API children after implementation of universal recommendations and school laws, and quantify ethnic-specific risk factors associated with late and incomplete vaccinations. METHODS: A multilingual questionnaire was distributed to parents of second and fourth graders in nine Los Angeles County (LAC) elementary schools with high proportions of API students. Data on Hepatitis B vaccination dates, source of health care and health information, cultural factors, and general knowledge and attitudes about HBV and vaccination were collected and analyzed. FINDINGS: Overall, 1,696 (77%) of 2,183 questionnaires were returned. Of these, 1,024 were from API children. The API second graders in this survey had a 72% coverage rate, ranging from 46% to 94% among the individual ethnic groups. Fifty-one percent of API fourth graders had three doses of Hep B vaccine, ranging from 38% to 69% among the individual ethnic groups. Factors influencing coverage levels among API fourth graders were speaking limited English at home, living in the United States less than five years, and not having discussed hepatitis B vaccination with a health care provider. Factors influencing low immunization levels differed among the API ethnic groups. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis and intervention on a non-aggregate level are necessary for designing both effective and cultural-specific outreach programs for diverse API communities such as LAC's.
