Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is generally considered a primary condition. Our study, based on ten observations, shows that anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid with a rapidly fatal course may arise in long-standing goiters. Borderline histologic changes may be encountered; in some differentiated nodules, undifferentiated areas were found. Factors inducing transformation is equally obscure. Anaplastic changes may result from the growth of previously quiescent clones. The time-interval between benignant and malignant lesions varies widely and is difficult to establish unequivocally. In some instances, anaplastic carcinoma occurs after surgical removal of differentiated carcinoma.

Thrombelastography in the whole blood and determination of antithrombin III by means of chromogenic substrates were performed in a group of 10 patients with hypertension. The results of the thrombelastograms showed a slight shift toward hypercoagulability, as revealed by a significant increase in the thrombodynamic potential index. There was no significant change in antithrombin activity as compared with control group.
The ophthalmology radioactive phosphorus uptake test has been utilized in the differential diagnosis of intra ocular lesions in 21 patients. In the majority of the cases the diagnosis was histologically confirmed. When the lesion is located in the anterior part of the globe, it is not necessary to make an incision of the conjunctiva to perform the test. If the lesion is located in the posterior segment, the test is performed by the transscleral route, with surgical incision of the conjunctiva and with indirect ophthalmoscopy control when possible. In 3 patients with choroidal hemangioma were results false-positives, observed with inferior P32 uptake to that in patients with choroidal melanomas. One false-negative result was obtained in a patient with a clinical diagnosis of uveal malignant melanoma, histologically confirmed after enucleation of the globe. In all others patients with uveal malignant melanoma results were highly positive.
Fibro-histiocytic neoplasms are uncommon in the respiratory tract. This paper presents a clinical and histological description of a case of fibrous histiocytoma at the level of the third tracheal ring. This cases shares some features with the four cases previously described, viz., the growth occurs mainly in young adults; recurrences are common; and all have shown similar benign histological patterns. Ultrastructural investigations confirmed the fibro-histiocytic nature of the neoplasm.
The authors present an exceptional case of chemodectoma jugulare with important invasion of the skull base involving all the cranial nerves on one side and conforming Garcin's syndrome. Practically all the possible ways of spreading were followed by the tumor, with involvement of the posterior, middle and anterior fossas of the skull base and also orbit, middle ear and neck. The clinical and histopathological difficulties in the diagnosis, especially when the chemodectoma has only neurological signs, are stressed. The association of otologic symptoms makes the diagnosis easier. The patient had an early onset of the symptoms and a rapid evolution considering this type of tumors. The appearance of goitre in this patient is a sign of endocrine disturbance, which is occasionally associated with these tumors. Apparently this chemodectoma was not a secreting tumor, since the blood pressure values were normal. No signs of multicentricity or metastatic growths were detected. The radiological studies, and especially computerized tomography scanning, gave precise information about the spreading of the tumor. The authors consider that the knowledge of this entity is important in order to arrive at a correct diagnosis.
