Temperature sensitivity of skeletal muscle in the conscious goat.

A method has been developed to test the hypothesis that the deep tissues of the legs, e.g., skeletal muscle and/or periosteum, contain thermosensitive elements feeding signals into the temperature-regulating system. Stainless steel thermodes of 10 to 12-mm diameter and 100 to 150-mm length were chronically implanted into the marrow spaces of both humeri and femora, all of which have wide cavities and thin walls. Perfusing the thermodes with water of 0 degree C altered the temperature of the deep muscle layers by several degrees. The animals were further equipped with intravascular heat exchangers, which served to keep general body temperature constant during periods of leg cooling. Eighty experiments were performed in a hot and dry environment. During the middle period of each experiment the legs were cooled by perfusing the thermodes with water of 0 degree C. This caused respiratory evaporative heat loss to decrease by 0.15-0.20 W/kg. The small but significant response occurred at constant general body temperature and is therefore indicative of a local effect of the cooling on deep thermosensitive elements in the legs themselves and a neural afferent transmission of temperature signals into the temperature-regulating system.

A new class of pseudo-differential operators.

We describe a class of pseudo-differential operators and their singular integral realizations and show how these may be used to give precise estimates in various function spaces. Application will be given in particular to several situations in which subelliptic estimates arise for partial differential equations.

[Allergic reactions following dextrane infusions (author's transl)].

14 allergic reactions to dextran 60 and dextran 75 are reported. In 8 patients the peripheral pulse became impalpable; Medical history and clinical examination did not reveal any predisposition. Histamine liberation is to be discussed. Antihistamines did not protect against allergic reactions of colloid plasma expanders. All the patients were treated with prednisolone and fluids. After rapid infusion of Ringer-lactate and plasma protein solution to an amount of 2000-2775 ml adequate circulation was restored.

Inherited cholesterol lipidosis: cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (van Bogaert Scherer Epstein disease). A clinicopathological study.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomathosis (CTX) is a rare autosomal-recessively transmitted disease of the lipid storage system with an array of general and neurological symptoms, based on the pathological storage of cholestanol and cholesterol. The histologic manifestations are foamy cell granulomata and cholesterol crystals within various tissues, associated with a loss of both nerve cells and demyelination inside the CNS. We present a case of CTX with clinical progression as well as the pathomorphologic autopsy findings. The CNS affection in our case will be demonstrated and the pathogenesis be discussed. Medical treatment of CTX is possible but with variable success. In the case shown, the patient profited only marginally from a long-term application of chenodeoxycholic acid.

[Evaluation of cefoxitin and cefotaxime screening plates for the detection of methicillin-resistance in Staphylococcus aureus].

Detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates represents a serious problem to low and media level microbiology labs. In this work cefoxitin (FOX) and cefotaxime (CTX) screen plates (AS) (8-16 microg/ml) with and without 4% of NaCl were evaluated to detect MRSA. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were determined. The AS oxacillin and the agglutination test MRSA-Screen Latex for the detection of PLP2a were used as reference methods for the evaluation of the different studied screening plates. The 100% (94 strains) PLP2a positive were detected as MRSA with FOX (8 microg/ml), and CTX (8 microg/ml with 4% NaCl) AS. The advantage of FOX AS (8 microg/ml) is that it does not need the addition of NaCl, and CTX AS (8 microg/ml with 4% NaCl) is that cefotaxime is an antimicrobial easily accessible in our country.

[Description of musical expression and initial results of the Lübeck music therapy model].

In the Medical University of Lübeck (Germany), T. Maler developed a music group therapy, which was based on psychoanalytic theories. In the years from 1984-1991, the behavior of 200 patients in the music therapy was assessed by means of new constructed rating scales. The patients had different kinds of psychosomatic and psychiatric disorders. The results show significant changes in the music playing behavior after 10 sessions of music therapy. The patients playing was louder, more free in the improvisation and showed more plasticity. There were no differences between the different diagnostic groups in the study.
