[Genotoxic effects in workers engaged in ore mining and processing].

The authors studied frequencies of chromosomal aberrations (CA) in 48 ore mining and processing workers exposed to occupational hazards complex. Finding is significantly increased frequency of CA, when compared to that in reference groups. Level of structural CA in the main group appeared not to depend on age, sex and bad habits (smoking). The study revealed indirect dependence between cytogenetic disorders frequency and length of service.

[Multiyear dynamics of cytogenetic abnormalities in adolescents from a large industrial city].

Long-term cytogenetic monitoring was carried out in adolescents of the town of Kemerovo. In total, aberrant metaphase frequency increased from 1.53% in 1992 to 4.40% in 1996 in Kemerovo adolescents, being significantly higher than a control frequency from 1993 to 1996. In all samples, chromosome aberrations mostly included acentric fragments, while exchanges were rare. The highest number of aberrations per aberrant metaphase was 2 in Kemerovo adolescents and 1 in the control sample. The observed increase in total number of chromosome aberrations suggests that the mutagenic effect of chemical environmental pollutants on Kemerovo adolescents increased over the five years.

[Effect of comprehensive therapy using antibiotics and sulfanilamide and stimulant preparations on natural body resistance in acute dysentery].

A total of 489 patients at the age of 18 to 74 with acute dysentery of medium severity without concomitant diseases were observed. The patients were subjected to combined therapy with the use of antibiotics, sulfanilamides and stimulants. The state of the patients' natural resistance was determined by the dynamics and levels of the bactericidal activity of lysozyme, blood serum complement as well as lysozyme and beta-lysine coprofiltrates. It was found that the use of tetracycline, furazolidone combinations with sulfanilamides and leukopoiesis-stimulating drugs had a favourable effect on the dynamics of the host natural resistance reduction. The reduction of the natural resistance in the patients treated with levomycetin in combination with sulfanilamides and stimulants was much slower than the clinical recovery.

[Toxico-genetic risk factors for adolescents living in a large industrial city].

Cytogenetic study of adolescents in a large industrial city (n = 211) and donors (n = 41) showed an increase in the number of chromosomal aberrations per 100 lymphocytes in urban adolescents from 1.58 +/- 0.41 in 1992 to 4.53 +/- 0.48 in 1996. A significant increase in the spontaneous level of aberrations (2.02 +/- 0.21) was observed starting from 1993. Time course of the number of chromosomal aberrations and components of the environment (radiation background, chemical pollution of potable water, foodstuffs, and atmospheric air) in the city of Kemerovo in 1992-1996 are compared. According to the data of analysis of correlations, the most significant genotoxicants are nitrogen oxide (II), methanol, and benz(a)pyrene.

[The rehabilitation of patients with urethral injuries and their sequelae].

The treatment was conducted for 154 patients aged 3-69 with traumatic rupture of the urethra. Eighteen patients underwent primary suturing, five patients primary delayed repair of the urethra. Urethral patency was achieved in all the cases. In 127 cases urethral rupture was associated with visceral and skeletal injuries managed by epicystostomy with good results. 16 patients without extended diastasis of the urethral fragments got circular tubes. 24 patients out of 111 developed restenosis (7 due to urethrotomy and 17 after tunneling). Later on 14 of these and the rest 87 patients were subjected to plastic reconstruction. Out of 101 patients operated on 3 needed bougienage, 1 patients retained urethrorectal fistula. 8 patients had postoperative dynamic urethral obstruction removed upon augmentation of detrusor tonicity by means of intravenous administration of calcium chloride and strofantina. Copulative dysfunction occurred in 70% of the patients over 22 years of age. Extracavernous prosthetic implantations performed in 33 of them corrected erectile impotence [correction of importance].

[Designing a dynamic spinal distractor].

Based on theoretical calculations, biomechanical tests, and clinical trials, new types of dynamic distractors are proposed to treat scoliosis in children. The specific feature of the designed devices is that they can transform spinal rotatory motions of the spine and move apart the reference elements of the distractor, which rules out the need for supplementary surgical interventions and reduces the incidence of complications.
