Incorporation of serine and ethanolamine into the phospholipids in rabbit retina.

The incorporation of serine and ethanolamine into phospholipids in rabbit retinal subcellular fractions and in excised retinas was studied in vitro, and some enzymic properties of the incorporation of phospholipid bases by base exchange were examined in the microsomal fraction. The retina was found to have a higher rate of base exchange for the incorporation of phospholipid bases than other tissues. The retinal microsomal fraction possessed the highest specific activity of base exchange, while the rod outer segment had very little activity. These results suggest that the phospholipids in the rod outer segment may be transferred from the inner segment of the photorecepter cell. The apparent Km values for serine and ethanolamine in the microsomal fraction decreased with decreasing Ca2+ concentration. Although no further increase of incorporation of serine and ethanolamine occurred after 40 min in the microsomal fraction, continuous incorporation of both bases into phospholipids was seen for 3 hr in excised retina. Illumination did not significantly affect the incorporation of serine and ethanolamine in excised retina or in the rod outer segment fraction. Base exchange reaction thus may not play a direct role in the visual process.

Echocardiography and angiocardiography for detection of left atrial thrombosis.

Diagnostic capabilities for detection of the left atrial clot in patients with mitral stenosis were compared between echocardiography and angiocardiography. Large clots in the left atrial body were correctly diagnosed either by echocardiography or by angiocardiography. Clots in the left atrial appendage were not disclosed by echocardiography. Left atrial visualization with pulmonary arteriography offers only possible diagnosis of the clot in the appendage. Definite diagnosis of the clot in this location requires transseptal left atriography.

Effects of allopurinol on tissue oxygen tension of the ischemic myocardium.

The effects of allopurinol on the myocardial oxygen metabolism were studied in dogs with acute coronary artery occlusion. Upon occlusion of the contributory branch of the coronary artery, myocardial pO2, as measured with an improved polarographic technique, decreased to various lower values depending on the site of the electrode inserted. In the slightly ischemic myocardium, where myocardial pO2 decreased less than 50% of the control by the coronary occlusion, administration of allopurinol brought about a further diminution in myocardial pO2. In the severly ischemic myocardium, where myocardial pO2 decreased more than 50% of the control upon the coronary occlusion, no significant change was observed following allopurinol infusion. Theoretical beneficial effects of allopurinol on the ischemic myocardium by preserving functional purine bases might be offset by the aggravation of the negative oxygen balance in the ischemic but still viable myocardium following administration of allopurinol.

Histopathologic and roentgenologic studies on the effects of irradiation on the human mandibles.

The present study deals with the pathologic change of the mandible following radiation therapy for oral cancer, histopathologically and roentgenologically. The results are summarized as follows: 1) As the resorptive change of the cortex and the trabeculae, irregular and bizarre resorption and enlargement of the lacunae were observed, 2) The grade of injury of the osteocytes was described by the percentage of the number of the lacunae, which were empty and in which the nuclei of the osteocytes could not be seen. Consequently these results correspond considerably well with the clinical aspects. 3) Osteophytes in the spongy and compact bone were observed, and also narrowing and plugging of the Haversian canal and the canal of Volkmann with mineral were seen as the sclerotic change. 4) Thickening of the tunica intima, obstruction, disarrangement of the elastic fibers and distruption of the vessels were observed in the inferior alveolar artery, the arterioles, and also occlusion, which gave various appearances, in the vessels within the Haversian canal and the canal of Volkmann was seen. 5) The following four groups, based upon the radiographic change, were classified as: Group I, irregular osteolytic change; Group II, marked osteosclerotic change; Group III, irregular mixture of osteolytic and osteosclerotic change; and Group IV, no remarkable change.

Distant metastasis of carcinoma in the maxillo-facical region--relationship to the method of therapy and TNM system.

Based upon the autopsy findings, the incidence of distant metastasis was studied to seek the relativity between the method of treatment and the TNM system at the time of initial examination on 31 cases with squamous cell carcinoma in the maxillo-facial region. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The incidence of distant metastasis among all of these cases was 58 per cent. 2) There was no significant difference in the incidence between the groups with radiation therapy and chemotherapy. 3) There was no relativity with the TNM system. 4) In the group with radiation therapy, the incidence at the "sites of the movable mucosa" was significantly higher than that at the "sites of the non-movable mucosa." 5) There was no relationship to the performance of radical neck dissection.

Relationship of plasma aldosterone concentration to electrolytes and acid-base balance in blood after open cardiac surgery.

Plasma aldosterone concentration was measured in 11 cardiac patients after open cardiac surgery, by the radioimmunoassay method, and the relationship of it to electrolytes and acid-base balance of blood was analyzed. Plasma aldosterone concentration was markedly elevated in patients with low cardiac output, who required postoperative drip infusion of Isoproterenol, and in addition, both remarkable metabolic alkalosis and increase of potassium excretion in urine were confirmed in these patients. Plasma aldosterone concentration correlated significantly with potassium excretion in urine and was inversely related with potassium balance. However, plasma potassium concentration or arterial pH had no correlation to it. Approximately an inverse correlation was found between the logarithm of the sodium/potassium ratio in urine and plasma aldosterone concentration. These data indicate that aldosterone is an important factor which produces potassium depletion after open cardiac surgery.
