An 8-year follow-up of Ceravital middle ear prostheses showed an extremely good tolerance in the middle ear space. Incompatibility phenomena were not observed. Inflammatory reactions were neither caused nor supported by the implants. The implantation was always performed without interposition of cartilage. Extrusions were not observed. Long-lasting inflammatory processes destroy implants in the same way as they affect ossicles. Transient inflammatory periods (e.g. in the early postoperative period, POM) do not lead to any remarkable changes of the implant surface. In healthy middle ears, the hearing results are stable.
To study the membrane anchoring of the 120 kDa component of the neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM, the smallest form lacking a transmembrane domain, cultured mouse neural cells were treated with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C from Staphylococcus aureus. When live cultures of astrocytes and neurons are treated with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C, N-CAM120 is released into the supernatant. Under these conditions N-CAM140 and N-CAM180 are not released. Phospholipase C from Bacillus cereus or Clostridium perfringens does not release N-CAM120. The embryonic form of N-CAM on astrocytes migrating as a broad band between 120 and 180 kDa is also partially released by phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C as a band migrating between 120 and 160 kDa. These observations suggest novel mechanisms in regulation of N-CAM120 expression on the cell surface and in modulation of N-CAM-mediated cell adhesion.
Apart from the rarity of the causal agent, this case is of interest because of the absence of cervico-facial involvement and the presence of multiple cutaneous nodules at a distance from the visceral localisation.
A 60 year old woman developed recurrence of a localized pleural mesothelioma 18 years after initial exeresis. Based on data from 33 cases of primary tumor of pleura treated in the UCH, Vaudois, Switzerland between 1958 and June 1986, symptomatology, treatment and prognosis of pleural mesothelioma a are discussed. Findings suggest the need for long-term follow up surveillance of patients with benign mesothelioma.

A lectin with a mannose specificity was isolated from the cerebellum of young rats. The method of purification was based on the observation that during homogenization of the tissue, the lectin binds to a class of mannose-rich glycoproteins highly insoluble in Triton X-100. Sequential extractions in saline buffer devoid of, then containing, 0.5% Triton X-100 allowed the elimination of a great part of other proteins. Using the same buffer containing 0.5 M mannose, a specific class of protein can be solubilized. This fraction was enriched by affinity adsorption on insolubilized mannose-rich glycoproteins followed by specific detachment with mannose. One of the protein subunits, of molecular weight (MW) 130,000, was isolated by preparative gel electrophoresis. Upon re-electrophoresis, this compound gives two bands of MW 65,000 and 130,000, which appear to be a monomer and a dimer of a molecule called R1. Antibodies were raised against R1 which react with the monomer and the dimer and not against other proteins of the rat cerebellum. The immunohistochemical localization of this lectin was performed in cerebella of 20-day-old rats. The antigen is concentrated in endothelial cells and in large and intermediate size neurons (Purkinje, Golgi, basket and deep nuclei neurons). Granule cell bodies are lightly stained and no label at all was found in glial cells. At the level of electron microscopy, the antigen was found to be very concentrated in multivesicular bodies and lysosomes of large neurons, on parts of the endoplasmic reticulum, on some mitochondrial outer membranes and on the plasma membrane of the dendrites. The possible role of this lectin in cerebella of young rats is discussed in relation to its interaction with a specific class of mannose-rich glycoproteins.
Based on three cases of foetal abnormalities (hydrocephalus, prune-belly syndrome, and unilateral multicystic renal disease) diagnosed and treated by intrauterine sonographic control, the article describes the technique, evolution and outcome of these cases. Two patients (the hydrocephalus and the prune-belly syndrome) died after delivery, whereas the third one lives in normal conditions. The different diagnoses and prognoses of this new surgical procedure are discussed. We think that hydrocephaly and renal obstruction have a very bad prognosis when diagnosis and therapy are not performed an initiated at an early stage. Unilateral disease of Potter-Syndrome is associated with a very good prognosis irrespective of whether therapeutic intervention is effected or not. For this reason, the intervention should be considered according to the compressive action that the cystic renal disease can exercise on the other kidney or lung.
The authors present a case of thrombosis of the umbilical vein in a foetus in the 27th week of pregnancy, discovered via ultrasound diagnosis. The foetus presented with marked ascites and anasarca. Despite foetal death there were no visceral malformations, and no pathological criteria presented by the mother. The characteristic features and sensitivity of sonographic diagnosis in umbilical vein thromboses are discussed as part of the extensive pathology of the umbilical cord.

Some properties and the level of endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase were studied during the postnatal development of the rat cerebellum. No isoenzymes were detected. The enzyme (essentially cytosolic) showed a peak of total and specific activity at the 24th postnatal day. The hypothesis was formulated that glycoprotein glycans could be degraded in two steps: one lysosomal, the other cytosolic.
In a recent paper we gave evidence by two-dimensional electrophoresis that, in man, the class II antigen associated glycoprotein p31 (also called Ii, In, M1, DR gamma, XM1) is expressed not only in the membranes of B lymphocytes but also in those of muscle, liver and brain. It can therefore be assumed that the p31 is not really associated with the human class II antigens but is a ubiquitous molecule. Here we demonstrate for the first time that the muscle membranes of cattle and pig contain corresponding polypeptides, with a molecular weight of about 31 kDa and an isoelectric point around 7.5, which comigrate in two-dimensional electrophoresis with p31 derived from the human muscle. Thus, in cattle and pig too, these proteins seem to be equivalent to the class II antigen associated p31, showing a tissue distribution wider than observed up to now. The molecules can be concentrated by ion-exchange chromatography.
