A clinical and neurophysiological trial on nootropic drugs in patients with mental decline.

The different expressions of mental decline in elderly people, from simple senile benign forgetfulness to SDAT, can be evaluated by psychometric and neurophysiological tests. In the present study, the effects of oxiracetam, piracetam and placebo were compared in a group of elderly subjects. The results of the trial, structured as single blind, clearly showed that nootropics positively effect both clinical and neurophysiological performances and that oxiracetam produces a more pronounced effect when compared to piracetam. In fact, oxiracetam was found more effective in improving psychometric scales such as GDS (clinical performances) as well as the amplitude and the latency of the P300 (neurophysiological performances), which reflect a functional recovery of the cerebral pathways related to attention and memory.

Ambroxol for prophylaxis and treatment of bronchopulmonary complications after chest surgery.

A double-blind clinical trial has been carried out with 40 patients hospitalized for thoracic pathology requiring surgery (cancer of the lungs, hamartoma, pleural mesothelioma, bullous dystrophy or emphysema of the lung). The purpose was to determine the effectiveness of the drug in preventing and in treating postoperative bronchopulmonary complications. The results showed that the patients treated with 1g of ambroxol for three days before surgery, on the day of the operation and for five days afterwards had a more rapid turnover of intra-alveolar surface tension and better re-expansion of the pulmonary parenchyma after surgery. They also had better mucociliary clearance of the respiratory tract. These improvements are indispensable for limiting bronchopulmonary complications after chest surgery.

[Use of CT 1341 (althesin) for outpatient dental interventions].

Results with althesin as anaesthetic in out-patient dental surgery are reported. A personal technique is described and reference is made to a large series in an account of the way althesin proved suitable for this form of anaesthesia. Stress is laid on the rarity of intra- and postoperative complications, and the rapid, complete return to consciousness observed after althesin.

Pattern reversal visually evoked potentials in general anesthesia.

Various authors have tried to determine visual acuity both electrophysiologically (Sokol, 1976 and 1978; Marg et al., 1976; Maffei and Fiorentini, 1977) and with psychophysical methods (Teller et al., 1974; Banks and Salapatek, 1976; Atkinson et al., 1976) in awake children. Our experiments try to verify the possibility of assessing visual acuity in children under Ethrane anesthesia. We conclude that under Ethrane anesthesia VEPs produced by phase-alternating square-wave gratings do not allow a fine assessment of visual acuity. Gross indications of visual acuity can however be obtained.
