Mortality in relation to Minnesota code items in elderly subjects. Sex-related differences in a cardiovascular study in the elderly.

The prognostic value of electrocardiographic abnormalities has not been widely studied in the elderly. We examined the Minnesota code ECG items in 2254 elderly subjects of the Cardiovascular Study in the Elderly (CASTEL), performed on an Italian general population. In our experience, codes for ischaemia, 1st-degree atrio-ventricular block, bundle branch blocks, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation or sinus tachycardia were predictors of overall mortality in females, while only the former three items were predictors in men. Although ischaemia, left bundle branch block and atrial fibrillation were predictors of cardiovascular mortality in both sexes, right bundle branch block, supraventricular arrhythmias and left ventricular hypertrophy were predictors only in men, and 1st-degree atrio-ventricular block were predictors only in women. Surprisingly, left anterior haemiblock and bifascicular blocks were not predictive of mortality.

Blood pressure, left ventricular hypertrophy and diabetes among 179 very old hypertensives from an Italian general population. The CASTEL (Cardiovascular Study in the Elderly).

Hypertension is common in elderly subjects, but old and particularly very old people have usually been excluded from major epidemiological trials. We studied 179 hypertensive subjects aged 80 years or more drawn from elderly people of an Italian town within the context of the CASTEL (Cardiovascular Study in the Elderly). Prevalence of hypertension declined from 66.7% (first visit, first measurement) to 56.3% (last visit, last measurement). Systolic but not diastolic blood pressure was a little higher among very old hyperglycemic hypertensive subjects than in normoglycemic ones, while left ventricular mass was independent of both blood pressure and glucose intolerance.

Relation between spontaneous atrial fibrillation and atrial vulnerability in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern.

An intracavitary electrophysiological study was carried out on 103 patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW), 23 symptomatic patients had documented episodes of atrial fibrillation, 54 symptomatic patients had atrioventricular reentrant tachycardias, and 26 asymptomatic. Patients were examined for the relation between spontaneous atrial fibrillation and atrial vulnerability, defined as the possibility to induce sustained (greater than 1 minute) episodes of atrial fibrillation with a stimulation protocol excluding atrial bursts. Atrail fibrillation induction was attempted by single and double atrial extrastimuli during pacing at two different cycle lengths and incremental atrial pacing. Sustained atrail fibrillation was induced in 65% of the patients with spontaneous atrial fibrillation, and in 13% of the symptomatic patients with documented episodes of atrioventricular reentrant tachycardias and in 15% of the asymptomatic patients (P less than 0.0005). Atrial vulnerability was higher in patients with spontaneous atrial fibrillation than in patients without this arrhythmia. No significant difference was observed between symptomatic without atrial fibrillation and asymptomatic patients.

Conventional transmission electron microscopy of 1-1 haptoglobin isolated molecules and paracrystalline aggregates.

Data are presented relating conventional transmission electron microscope (CTEM) ultrastructural observations of the monomeric phenotypic variant (Hp 1-1) of the haptoglobin class of blood glycoproteins. Through comparison of these findings with homologous published data, obtained by means of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), the validity of CTEM in molecule shape and fine structure determination is confirmed. An experimental procedure for Hp 1-1 crystallization is also reported.

Electron microscope observations on the substructure of T-even (T2, T4) head.

New preparative methods have been devised which allow electron microscope observation of T-even head substructure, under conditions of negative staining. Capsomeric constitution of the head shell could so be confirmed and demonstrated for T2 and T4. In addition capsomere size and shell thickness of the head of both phages have been determined and the structural organization of the DNA inside T4 head revealed.

Epidemiological studies of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in leg ulcers.

A 6-month prospective study was carried out in an angiology ward on patients with leg ulcers. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from about half of the samples from the patients. Of the isolates, 85 were serotyped, fingerprinted as to passive pyocin sensitivity and characterized for antibiotic susceptibility pattern. According to all criteria, the isolates belonged to six strains, two of which were clearly epidemic: one infected 11 patients yielding 52 identical isolates, the other infected 4 patients (19 isolates).

2 micrometer covalently closed non-mitochondrial circular DNA in the petite-negative yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

A population of small covalently closed non-mitochondrial circular DNA molecules was isolated from the petite-negative yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The mean length of these molecules, possessing the same density as nuclear DNA (1.695 g/cm3) is 1.95 +/- 0.18 micrometer. The presence of these minicircles in crude mitochondrial preparations indicates their tight association with mitochondrial particles. Their disappearance after DNase treatment of mitochondria demonstrates their extramitochondrial location.
