Deoxyribonucleic acid base composition of species in the yeast genus Kluyveromyces van der Walt emend. van der Walt.

The deoxyribonucleic acid base composition (percent guanine + cytosine [GC]) was determined for 29 strains, representing 18 species of the genus Kluyveromyces. It was concluded that on the basis of GC content (47.4%) and other properties K. veronae occupies an uncertain position in the genus Kluyveromyces. The GC content of the remaining 17 species ranged from 35.3 to 43.4%, and three groups of species were recognized. The GC content of the first ranged from 35.3 to 38.0%; that of the second group from 39.5 to 41.7%; that of the third group from 42.4 to 43.4%. Several species revealed a nearly identical GC content. The GC contents do not correspond in all instances with the five groups of species proposed by van der Walt.

Frequency and complications of chronic iridocyclitis in ANA-positive pauciarticular juvenile chronic arthritis.

Chronic iridocyclitis (CI) is among the most important extra-articular manifestations of juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and is most often observed in young girls with pauciarticular JCA and circulating antinuclear antibodies (ANAs). The frequency of CI found in 39 children with ANA-positive pauciarticular JCA was 56%. None of the patients developed ocular complications during follow-up. We think that this favourable outcome was primarily due to the early diagnosis and to our choice of using atropine as a mydriatic agent and to prolong atropine, after having spaced its administration further apart, up to one year or longer after the remission of ocular manifestations.

The use of isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel for the enzymatic analysis of 'Old World' Leishmania species.

Using isoelectric focusing (IEF), a high resolution electrophoresis technique, we analysed 6 enzymes of 24 cloned strains representing all major taxa of 'Old World' Leishmania. The comparison of enzymatic patterns obtained with IEF and starch gel electrophoresis showed that IEF is a more discriminatory and more informative technique for the enzymatic analysis of Leishmania strains; it can detect very slight differences between 2 electromorphs not revealed with starch gel electrophoresis. Moreover, IEF detected several multi-banded patterns which appeared as single bands with starch gel electrophoresis. These multi-banded patterns could not be the result of strain heterogeneity since all the strains had been cloned. Their significance in the biology of Leishmania is discussed.

Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor and ryanodine receptor in the aging brain of Wistar rats.

Intracellular Ca2+ release channels are key players in the regulation of Ca2+ homeostasis. In the present study, we investigated the age-related changes of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor/Ca2+ release channel and ryanodine receptor/Ca2+ release channel in microsomes derived from either cerebellum or cerebrum cortex from male Wistar rats. A significant reduction (about 50%) in density of IP3 receptor/Ca2+ release channels was observed in cerebrum cortex, only, in 8- and 28-month old rats, whereas density and Kd of ryanodine binding sites were unaffected in both cerebellum and cerebrum microsomes. These findings, along with impairment of Ca(2+)-dependent protein kinase C phosphorylation of endogeneous substrates, point to coordinate, quantitative alterations of both targets of phosphoinositide metabolism, i.e., PKC and IP3 receptor, in the cerebrum cortex at least. The relevance of the present findings is discussed in relation to reported changes of neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis during aging.
