[Effect of eating habits on morbidity in 645 patients at a specialized clinic].

Among 645 obese patients examined at an out-patient clinic for obese patients by physical examination and a computerized questionnaire, two subgroups of patients could be identified according to their nutritional preferences: 177 patients preferred carbohydrates exclusively (group A) and 73 patients fat exclusively (group B). No definite preferences were formulated by the other patients. Among patients under 25 years, only 3 belonged to group B and 49 to group A, while in older patients no significant differences were found. Among patients with BMI less than 30, there were significantly fewer patients from group B than from group A (p = 0.006), while in patients with BMI greater than 30 no significant difference was observed. There were significantly more men in group B than in group A. 57% of the patients of group B complained of physical symptoms related to their obesity, compared to 37% in group A (p = 0.006). 26% of group B suffered from joints and muscles compared to 13% of group A (p = 0.003). Hyperglycemia (greater than 5,6 mmol/l) was found in 21% of group A and in 40% of group B (p less than 0.005). Hypercholesterolemia (greater than 6.5 mmol/l) was found in 20% of group A and in 32% of group B (p less than 0.05). In conclusion, obese patients who prefer fat have more general symptoms related to obesity, more abnormal physical signs, and more frequently have hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia than patients who prefer carbohydrates.

The prevalence of accentuated palmoplantar markings and keratosis pilaris in atopic dermatitis, autosomal dominant ichthyosis and control dermatological patients.

The prevalence of keratosis pilaris and accentuated palmoplantar marking was evaluated in 61 patients with atopic dermatitis, 35 patients with dominant ichthyosis vulgaris and 247 other dermatological cases taken as controls. Our data showed that (1) these features are of no diagnostic significance for atopic dermatitis and (2) they are significantly more frequent in patients with ichthyosis vulgaris without associated eczema than in those with atopic dermatitis. Consequently, they should be considered as part of the phenotype of ichthyosis vulgaris rather than attributed to a concomitant atopic dermatitis as suggested by some. These findings should be taken into account when evaluating atopic dermatitis or ichthyosis. To assess the frequency of scaling under winter weather conditions, 155 control subjects were also examined for evidence of visible desquamation and 25.8% showed slight but definite scaling.

[Ergometric validation of a questionnaire on the physical activity in 2 Swiss towns].

A questionnaire concerning physical activity used in the National Research Program No. 1A (PNR 1A) was evaluated by using a physical fitness test on an ergometric bicycle. The values of maximum oxygen consumption correspond to different classes of physical activity set up according to the questionnaire (comparison of groups statistically significant). In addition, it appears that maximal oxygen consumption is in direct relation to the intensity of physical activity during leisure hours, whilst the degree of activity connected with professional or household duties is of very little importance.

[Interlaboratory variation in the prenatal screening test for neural tube closing defects].

Early detection of neural-tude defects is possible by determining Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in maternal serum. 16'685 pregnant women were observed. Three methods for the determination of the "normal" range are compared. The first one, already used in similar studies, makes use of a constant multiple of the median. The other two ones make use of robust estimates of location and scale. Their comparison shows the interest of the robust methods to reduce the interlaboratory variability.

Neurofibromatosis of von Recklinghausen: a quantitative study of the epidermal keratinocyte and melanocyte populations.

The numerical keratinocyte to melanocyte relation was studied in café au lait spots and adjacent normally pigmented skin of 9 patients with classical neurofibromatosis. Compared to normal skin of healthy individuals, the keratinocyte:melanocyte ratio distributions obtained in neurofibromatosis indicated a shift to lower values in the biopsies of café au lait spots and normally pigmented skin. These results are evidence in favor of an impaired tissue organization of the epidermis in neurofibromatosis with regard to the keratinocyte-melanocyte interrelation.

[Education of the diabetic patient and its evaluation by a multiple-choice questionnaire].

37 insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetics answered a multiple-choice questionnaire during inpatient educational sessions. 12 dietetic and 12 pathophysiologic questions had to be answered. Statistical analysis of factors influencing the number of errors can be summed up as follows: there is a direct correlation between age of the patient and number of errors; the older the patient, the greater the number of errors. However, insulin-dependent diabetics committed fewer errors than non-insulin-dependent subjects of the same age, which suggests greater motivation in the first group due to their treatment. The test likewise affords the patients an opportunity of reviewing unclear topics and enables the educational team to adapt their teaching to the patients.

[Risk factors in coronary arteriosclerosis in women].

108 women aged 28 to 74 years underwent cardiac angiography for evaluation of chest pain or other heart disease. 29 were found to be free of coronary disease and formed a control group. Multi-variable analysis indicated that hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, familial coronary disease and diabetes were the most relevant atherogenic risk factors.

Human exposure to styrene. IV. Industrial hygiene investigations and biological monitoring in the polyester industry.

An industrial hygiene study of 10 glassfiber reinforced polyester plants (including 90 workers) was undertaken to investigate the styrene exposure in this industry and to estimate biological limit values (BLV's) for the urinary metabolites of styrene: mandelic (MA) and phenylglyoxylic acids (PGA). Time weighted average (TWA) styrene exposures were found ranging from 2 to 200 ppm. The urinary elimination of metabolites correlated well with exposure and the BLV's corresponding to an 8-h exposure at 100 ppm were consistent with earlier laboratory findings (end-of-shift sample: MA 1640, PGA 510, MA + PGA 2150; next-morning sample: MA 330, PGA 330, MA + PGA 660 mg/g creat.). Total metabolites (MA + PGA) in the next-morning sample or mandelic acid in the end-of-shift sample are recommended for routine monitoring of exposure to styrene. The study revealed the need for further research on how to reduce styrene exposure in this industry.
