[Treatment of postoperative pain with non-narcotic drugs; evaluation of lysine acetylsalicylate in high doses. Double-blind controlled study].

Further work on the treatment of postoperative pain with non-narcotic analgesics involving an investigation of the effect of twice the customary dose of lysine acetylsalicylate in a double-blind trial versus meperidine is reported. In addition to subjective and objective pain, the parameters included blood pressure, pulse rate, breathing rate, sweating, pupil diameter, nausea, vomiting, somnolence, hiccuping feeling of cold, erythema, dizziness, and nasograstric sound intolerance. Application of Wilcoxon's non-parametric tests and the chi-square test showed that the drug was as good as or better than meperidine with regard to pain, and performed very well overall with respect to the other parameters. The conclusion is drawn that its administration in high doses is justified in many patients subjected to general surgery.

[A new ICSB classification of staphylococci stocks previously classified according to Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology].

A collection of 215 Staphylococci, already classified according to Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, has been newly classified by these authors in view of the I C S B classification from 1976. Various stocks coned not be included in this classification. The collection between laboratory tests and patogenic effects of Staphylococci has been considered by the authors.

Beta-adrenergic regulation of circadian rhythmicity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in five subtypes of essential hypertension.

The possible implication of the beta-sympathoadrenergic system in regulating the rhythmicity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) was studied in ten normotensive volunteers and in thirty-nine essential hypertensive patients. The study was carried out by simultaneous radioimmunological measurements of diurnal levels of plasma renin and aldosterone before and during acute oral medication of beta-adrenoceptors with propranolol. Acute beta-blockade was seen to blunt the circadian periodicity of plasma renin and aldosterone in normotensives and in hypertensives with normal or high renin patterns. Conversely propranolol was seen to be ineffective in low-renin patients. The disappearance of the circadian rhythms under beta-adrenoceptor blockade tends to suggest the existence of a beta-adrenergic control of RAAS cyclicity in normal condition, as well as in normal or high renin essential hypertension. The inefficacy of propranolol in hyporeninemic hypertensives is consistent with the hypothesis that low-renin essemtoa; juertemsopm os a state in which the sympatho beta-adrenergic mechanism controlling the function of RAAS has no biologic time structure.

[Frequency and antibiotic resistance of bacteria isolated from urine cultures].

The AA report the data pertinent to the urine culture performed during a year in the Sanitary and Prophylactic Laboratory of the district of L'Aquila. In urine samples with number of bacteria > 10(5)/ml have been found E. coli (49%), Proteus mirabilis (32%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12%), Staphylococcus aureus (5%), Proteus rettgeri (1%), Enterococco (1%). The data are also reported concerning germ resistance to several antibiotics.

[Frequency of Escherichia coli serotypes in urinary infections].

Among the large O-groups of E.coli isolated from urinary-tract infections, a few groups appear more frequent. The AA report about this frequency in the district of L'Aquilla. Of 147 stocks of E.coli, the most frequent O-groups are the O6 (28,5%), the O75 (20,4%), the O2 (10,2%), the O18 (6,1%), the O5 (4,1%), the O39 (2%).

[In-vitro antimicrobial activity of 2 aminoglycoside antibiotics: tobramycin and gentamycin].

It has been determined the in vitro antibacterial activity of two antibiotics on 409 bacterial stocks isolated from several pathologic materials and composed by E.coli,Propeus,Salmonellae,Pseudomonas,Staphylococcus aureus. The Tobramicin has shown to have activity against all stocks of E.coli(82),Pseudomonas aeruginosa (62) and Salmonellae (21) and to have a better activity in comparison with Gentamicin also against Proteus and Staphylococcus aureus.

[Temporal aspects of the function of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Contribution to the methodological standardization of explorative test (author's transl)].

The purpose of this study is to throw further light on the problem of the methodological standardization in the study of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Thus, in 10 normal volunteers and 33 patients with moderate, recent and uncomplicated essential hypertension, divided into the subtypes with normal, high and low renin, it has been performed a timing analysis of the behaviour of plasma renin (PRA) and aldosterone (PA). PRA and PA were measured by radioimmunological methods in blood samples simultaneously collected in steady state conditions (study of circadian rhythmicity) and during the course of manipulative tests (orthostatism, dietary sodium restriction, orthostatism associated with sodium restriction, furosemide administration). The study revealed that each category of the present series of healthy and hypertensive individuals has an own temporal organization in the entire function of RAAS. This finding allowed to standardize the RIA reference indices as chronocorrelated intervals of normality and to establish the optimal criteria for the assessment of biochemical data and methodological study of hypertensive patients.

[Presence of Salmonella wien in Campania in 1974-75].

Salmonella wien was detected in various patients admitted to the D. Cotugno Hospital between May 1974 and June 1975. Strains isolated in Naples showed the same in vitro transferable resistance to antibiotics as those responsible for the recent epidemics in Algeria and France.

Release of prolactin during pregnancy: effect of sulpiride.

The aim of this trial was to study the prolactin-releasing capacity of the pituitary during pregnancy by means of an acute stimulation with sulpiride. Thirty women with normal pregnancies were included in the study (first trimester, nine women; second trimester, eleven women thir trimester, ten women). Each woman received an intramusclar injection of 100 mg of sulpiride sulfate between 8 and 9 A.M. Three similar groups received injections of a saline solution. Blood samples were obtained before and 30 and 60 minutes after the injection. In each sample the prolactin concentration was determined by radioimmunoassay. Basal prolactin levels increased during pregnancy. Significant responses to sulpiride were observed during the three stages of pregnancy, and the levels in the second and third trimesters were higher than those in the firsttrimester. The prolactin-releasing capacity of the pituitary, as judged by the response to sulpiride, seems to be maintained during pregnancy.
