Methods for determination of ionophore-type antibiotic residues in animal tissues.
Methods for the analysis of polyether antibiotics in animal tissues and fluids are described. For monensin and nigericin, only methods based on bioautography are available. For lasalocid, in addition to TLC bioautography for quantitation in chicken skin and fat, LC methods based on fluorescence detection have been developed for quantitation in animal blood, milk, liver, skin, and fat. In addition, a confirmatory method for lasalocid is described; this is based on purification by LC followed by silylation and pyrolysis gas chromatography-positive chemical ionization mass spectrometry.
Determination of sulfadimethoxine withdrawal time from milk. Part I: Dosing, sampling, and assay.
This study was undertaken to determine whether present regulations for discarding milk from cows treated with sulfadimethoxine (SDM) can be supported by modern analytical methodology. Two groups of milking cows (10 in first group; 11 in the second) were treated orally with SDM at the recommended dose levels for 5 days. The SDM concentration in the milk was determined with 4 methods (Charm Inhibition Assay [CIA], Charm II, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, and liquid chromatography) during the treatment and the subsequent withdrawal periods. The results of the 4 assays were compared.

Responding to the results of the Beverly Allitt inquiry.
In May 1993, while many nurses were gathered in Harrogate for the RCN's annual congress, the verdicts of the trial of enrolled nurse Beverly Allitt were announced. The nursing world found it difficult to believe that while employed on a six-month fixed-term contract on the children's ward at Grantham and Kesteven District General Hospital Ms Allitt had been convicted of murdering four children and injuring nine others. The following February the report of the Allitt inquiry was published. The inquiry team, chaired by Sir Cecil Clothier, had met 35 times, interviewed 94 witnesses in person, received written submissions from a number of interested bodies and reviewed numerous other relevant documents. This paper reviews the inquiry's original recommendations and outlines the actions that have been taken to implement them.
Know how vitamins and minerals.
Children are potentially at risk of vitamin and mineral deficiency. Young children have high nutrient requirements relative to their body size but frequently are faddy eaters and have small appetites. In contrast, school age children usually have good appetites, but have freedom of choice over what they eat and consume more meals outside the home. Their food choices are increasingly affected by peer pressure and advertising. This is a concern, as their knowledge of nutrition is limited.
