Diagnostic value of liver function tests and Entamoeba histolytica antibody studies in East Africans.

Liver function tests and Entamoeba histolytica (E.H.) antibody titres have been studied in a variety of tropical and liver diseases. Patients with hepatic amoebiasis had a raised E.H. antibody titre and tended to have a low pseudocholinesterase activity. In two cases of amoebic liver abscess, which were treated by aspiration and emetine, there was a remarkable drop in the E.H. antibody titre. In a number of other hepatic and tropical conditions the E.H. antibody titre was not significantly raised and the liver function tests were typical of the various conditions studied.

Sex hormone binding globulin in breast cancer.

Using a binding assay for sex hormone binding globulin, a Japanese group showed that they could select breast cancer patients more likely to be responsive to endocrine therapy, i.e. oestrogen receptor positive patients, by an increase in oestrogen binding capacity of the protein. We directly measured the levels of this protein using a specific antiserum to it, and the levels were not different from normal in any group of breast cancer patients whether or not oestrogen receptors were present. Both methods of measurement can detect a slight increase after a weak oestrogenic stimulus, indicating that they are as sensitive as each other.

General practice research in Australia, 1980-1999.

There has been a nearly fivefold increase in the amount of Australian general practice research published in 1990-1999 compared with the previous decade. The university departments of general practice and other university departments have been responsible for most of the research. GPs were involved in at least 60% of all of the research reviewed. Half of the research was found to be clinically pertinent to the front-line GP. The National Health Priority areas, introduced in 1994, were poorly represented, but it is probably too soon for this research to be published. There has also been little research on rural general practice. This review provides a starting point for classifying general practice and primary healthcare research in the future.

Acute phase reactant proteins as aids to monitoring disease.

The plasma acute phase reactant proteins are a group consisting mainly of glycosialated proteins, whose levels rise in response to a wide variety of injuries. This review discusses how by considering several APRPs coincidentally the pattern of change can have a discriminant function which can be used alone or to enhance other biochemical tests, especially in the monitoring of disease.
