Epidermoid cysts of testis.

Six cases of epidermoid cyst of the testis are presented. Conservative surgical treatment of this condition is discussed.

New concepts on formation of Brunn's nests and cysts in urinary tract mucosa.

To the present time, Brunn's nests have been conceived as being the result of pinching off of epithelial nests from urothelial buds. Mucosal cysts were considered to originate from Brunn's nests. In the present study, it was observed that under the influence of a strong stimulus of repair, the urothelial cells in the proximity of the focus of repair undergo numerous mitoses. The underlying connective tissue becomes loose, isolated cells of the lining urothelium "drop off" into the lamina propria in which they migrate as in a culture medium. There they multiply and form nests of cells at a distance from the lining urothelium. These migrating cells frequently have an early tendency to become arranged into cysts. Thus, during this process of repair urothelial cells behave temporarily as malignant cells.

Uncommon radiologic observations in renal milk-of-calcium stone.

Milk-of-calcium stone is a rare finding in the kidney. It is diagnosed radiologically based on the fact that the opacity takes a semilunar shape and layers according to the position of the patient. An unusual observations is that layering may require some time to take place and that the semilunar configuration may be found incidentally in the supine position as well.

Clinical aspects of granulomatous orchitis.

Granulomatous orchitis can present in a variety of forms varying from acute to chronic. Clinically, testicular neoplasm is usually diagnosed and radical orchiectomy is performed, with the correct diagnosis being made on microscopic examination. In this article 6 cases of granulomatous orchitis are presented, with a variety of clinical presentations varying from acute to the more chronic forms.

Accuracy of vocal emotional communications among children and adults and the power of negative emotions.

Two tapes of six emotions (anger, fear, sadness, contentment, happiness, love) recorded by child and adult speakers were played to child and adult listeners to determine whether (a) each group of listeners responds more accurately to positive or negative emotions; (b) each group of speakers communicates positive or negative emotions more accurately; (c-g) there were specific ways in which children adn adults differ in accuracy of perceiving and communicating the six emotions studied. Two hundred and ten white, male, middle-class Ss were used. It was found that (a) all listener groups perceived negative emotions more accurately; (b) all speaker groups communicated negative emotions more accurately; (c) there was a developmental trend in the ability to accurately perceive vocal communication; (d) children and adults did not differ significantly in the ability to express emotions; (e) adults perceived fear more accurately; (f) children communicated fear more accurately; (g) adults communicated sadness more accurately than children.

Renal malacoplakia.

A case of malacoplakia of the kidney is presented. The incidental finding of asymptomatic pyuria focused attention on the urinary system. Urologic evaluation concluded an avascular renal mass. The diagnosis of malacoplakia was established only after histologic studies of the surgical specimen were completed. Purulent perinephritis complicated the postoperative outcome.

Diagnostic problems of epithelial tumors of penis.

Malignant epithelial tumors of the penis often present aspects which make difficult an accurate clinical and pathologic diagnosis. Frequently, repeated biopsies yield a benign diagnosis while the tumor continues to progress and sections through it indicate malignant components. It is suggested that epithelial tumors of the penis may consist, in many instances from their start, of a mixture of benign and malignant elements in ratios varying from one extreme to the other. This may explain why biopsies are frequently misleading, yielding a benign result while, in fact, the tumor is malignant.

Seeding mechanism of urothelium over nonepithelialized surfaces.

To study urothelial spreading over nonepithelialized tissue surfaces, bladder defects in rabbits were patched with pedicled prevesical fat. Using serial sections and scanning electron microscopic studies, it was concluded that urothelium in the process of covering nonepithelialized surfaces is able to seed at a distance from the periphery of the defect as one means of epithelializing a defect.

Papillary adenocarcinoma of prostate.

Papillary adenocarcinomas of the prostate are rare tumors which may arise from the prostatic ducts and the utricle; 2 cases are described. The diagnosis of these tumors is best established by cystourethroscopy and transurethral resection. The more common prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma is frequently associated with these tumors. The histopathologic recognition of papillary adenocarcinoma of the prostate and its differentiation from acinar adenocarcinoma is important since the natural history and response to treatment may be different.

Bilateral transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis with unilateral non-functioning kidney.

A case is presented of bilateral transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis with extension of the tumor to involve the renal parenchyma bilaterally. Unilateral complete absence of function was demonstrated and pathological study correlated the absence of function with complete replacement and destruction of the renal parenchyma by transitional cell tumor. Segmental absence of function of the contralateral kidney is also correlated pathologically with complete replacement of the involved renal segment with tumor. Total replacement of renal parenchyma by transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis should be considered in the evaluation of renal non-function.
