Correlations of female steroid hormone receptors with histologic features in meningiomas.

A series of 39 samples were obtained from meningiomas in 28 patients in order to investigate the relationships of the oestrogen receptor (OER) and progesterone receptor (PR) with the tumoural subtype and some histological features. Twenty-one samples were positive (greater than 10 fmole/mg protein), 7 were OER-PR-negative, and 1 was positive in both receptors. Twenty-two samples were considered as syncitial, 7 transitional, 7 fibroblastic and 3 angioblastic. The histological subtype was not found to be significantly related to the presence or absence of PR. Relations were not observed between the progestin receptor and the following histological parameters: cellular pattern, cell density, nuclear polymorphism, mitosis, lymphoplasmacellular infiltrates, degree of vascularization, psammoma bodies and interstitial fibrosis. Only the presence of intratumoural necrosis was significantly related with a low PR levels. However, progesterone binding activity was lower in tumours with numerous psammomas, fibroblastic cell pattern and interstitial fibrosis. The clinical and biological significance of these results is discussed.

Epidermal growth factor receptor in human breast cancer: correlation with cytosolic and nuclear ER receptors and with biological and histological tumor characteristics.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) and cytosolic (cER) and nuclear (nER) estradiol receptors were quantified in 220 primary breast cancers. The EGFr was significantly more frequent (chi 2 = 5.9; P less than 0.025) and its concentration was significantly higher (P less than 0.001) among ER- tumors than in ER+ tumors. There was a significantly greater proportion (chi 2 = 6.4; P less than 0.05) of node involvement in EGFr+/ER+ tumors than in EFGr-/ER+. Increases in the proportion of EGFr+ in ER- tumors are parallel to Scarff-Bloom scores (chi 2 = 6.1; P less than 0.05) and there is a significant trend (Spearman rs = 0.25; P less than 0.05) towards increased EGFr concentrations with histologic dedifferentiation. In ER+ tumors the median concentrations of EGFr in the different age groups show a linear correlation (LCC = 0.89; P less than 0.05) and follow a parallel profile with the medians of nER. These findings support the hypothesis that EGFr is a bad prognosis factor and suggest that EGFr expression and concentration in ER+ tumors might be considered an estrogenic action mediated through the binding of ER to their nuclear acceptors.

Intratumoral variation of estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast cancer: relationship with histopathological characteristics of the tumor.

Estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors were assayed in the center and the periphery of 24 primary breast cancers and correlated with seven morphological features of the tumors. Quantitative variations in ER and PR contents between center and periphery were not significant, and the major discordance rate of the receptor status was only 8.3% for ER and 12.5% for PR. Among all morphological features studied, only tumor cellularity was correlated with steroid receptors; thus 18 out of 19 ER-positive samples (p less than 0.005) and 15 out of 16 PR-positive samples (p less than 0.025) were tumor cellularity 2-3, and higher ER (p less than 0.003) and PR (p less than 0.007) levels were found in tumor cellularity 2-3. Our results indicate that steroid receptors should be assayed in samples with a high content of tumor cellularity, whether the sample is taken from the center or the periphery of the tumor.

[Non-hemolytic transfusion reactions of the febrile type].

The results of a hundred cases of febrile non haemolytic transfusion reactions are presented. We used the techniques that would best identify the different causes of these reactions. Most of these antibodies were anti HLA. Platelet and granulocyte-specific antibodies were seldom detected. The nature of the antibodies was specified by their different reactivity with the cells of various donors, by applying a panel of cells from typed donors and by absorption experiments. The study of the donor sera enabled us to elucidate the causes of some reactions. Nevertheless, in a significant percentage of cases it was not possible to determine the cause of the reaction, especially in the case of reactions secondary to platelet transfusions. Finally, we analyzed the reasons that could account for these phenomena.

Perilunar dislocation of the carpus. A diagnosis still often missed.

A retrospective study of patients with dorsal perilunar dislocation of the carpus (DPD) from seven different centres has been made. There were 91 cases with adequate documentation and radiographs; of these, 61 attended for review between 12 months and 22 years (follow-up average: 42 months). Functional results were assessed by a modified Witvoet score (Witvoet & Allieu, 1973). There were only 33/61 good results. Statistical evaluation disclosed that, whatever the morphology of the initial injury, prognosis had a significant relation to the delay of time between accident and diagnosis (p less than 0.001) to the accuracy of reduction and its maintenance (p less than 0.025) and to the rotation degree of the semilunar bone (p less than 0.001). Authors conclude by saying that there is no problem in DPD itself. The problem exist in the fact that these injuries are still often missed and, subsequently, mismanaged.
