Student test type preference and its relation to personality and achievement.

1. Test type preference of 227 medical students was investigated by means of a questionnaire. 2. A majority of students believed that MCQ examinations gave rise to less advance anxiety than other forms of examination. 3. There was a highly significant correlation between preference and performance, probably as a result of reciprocal reinforcement between them. 4. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed than the scales stability/neuroticism, extraversion/introversion, general mental ability and native language had a significant influence on test preference. There was a significant trend for confident, stable students to demonstrate preference for MCQ while tense, anxious students tended to prefer other test types. 5. We conclude that a mixed examination format is desirable not only on theoretical grounds, but was also preferred by these students.

Sustained effects on synthetic ovarian steroids of rat myometrial contractility.

Ovariectomized rats were given a single dose of synthetic oestrogen or progestogen, or both combined. On selected days after treatment one rat from each treatment group was killed and myometrical contractility in response to spasmogens was measured isometrically in isolated tissue baths. Contractility persisted at a low level after ovariectomy without steroid replacement (controls) for the 60 days of the experiment. The powerful potentiating action of oestrogen reached a maximum in about 10 days and sustained a high level thereafter. Progestogen treatment did not influence contractility to a significant degree when compared with saline, except that the contractions were sometimes of higher frequency and more irregular in size. There was a less powerful potentiating action on contractility with combined oestrogen and progestogen treatment than with oestrogen alone. It reached a maximum in 4 days and declined more rapidly than with oestrogen-treated preparation but was still vigorous for up to 30 days.

Incidentally detected thrombosed vein during 67Ga citrate scanning.

A patient with stage IVA Hodgkin's disease developed thrombosis of the right cephalic vein at the site of an indwelling catheter. A few weeks later, 72 and 96 hr scans after injection of 67Ga citrate revealed an increased linear uptake where the thrombosed vein was palpated. As far as we know, this is the first case showing abnormal uptake of this agent in a thrombosed vein. It is postulated that residual chronic inflammatory cells are responsible for 67Ga citrate uptake in this case.

Decreased prevalence of immediate hypersensitivity (atopy) in a cancer population.

It has been suggested that the atopic population has decreased risk of cancer. This investigation examined the cumulative prevalence of atopy in a population with neoplastic disease and compared this with the prevalence of atopy in an age-matched control group and with published estimates of atopy in the general peopulation. Seventy-four patients with neoplastic disease and 86 patients without cancer were evaluated. The subjects were given a standard allergic questionnaire which evaluated them with regard to a history of allergic symptoms, hives, eczema, frequent colds, frequent unexplained rashes, hay fever, and asthma. All were skin tested with a representative group of regionally significant allergens. There was a 15-fold decrease in prevalence of atopy in the cancer population, compared with the control group and compared with published estimates of atopy in the general population.

Urinary polyamine levels in human cancer.

Polyamine levels (putrescine, spermidine, spermine) were determined in 24-hour urine samples by a high voltage electrophoresis technique. Normal values were established in 42 normal volunteers. Thirty-eight of 56 patients with metastatic cancer had two or more levels elevated. Approximately two-thirds of patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma, metastatic squamous cell cancer or metastatic disease to the liver, lings, or bones had elevated levels. All 6 patients with localized malignant tumors had elevated urinary polyamine levels. Elevations were also seen in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and bronchial adenoma.

Aerosol BCG treatment of carcinoma metastatic to the lung: a phase I study.

BCG (TICE) was safely administered to 15 patients with metastatic cancer to the lungs in weekly doses of up to 3 X 107 organisms by the aerosol route. The aerosol route of administration is associated in approximately 33% of the doses with a toxicity syndrome of malaise, fever, and chills beginning 4 to 8 hours after treatment and ending within 24-36 hours. This syndrome is experienced by all patients and symptoms gradually subside with continuation of therapy. No hepatic or pulmonary toxicity was documented during the 221 treatment doses.

Urinary polyamine levels in patients with gastrointestinal malignancy.

Polyamine levels (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) were determined in 24-hour urine samples by a high voltage electrophoresis technique. Eleven of 14 patients with widespread metastatic gastrointestinal cancer had two or more elevated polyamine values. Two patients with cancer confined to the colon and two with cancer spread within the pelvis had two or more elevated polyamine values. Three patients who had all known disease removed by surgery, two patients with gastric lymphoma, and one patient with a vilous adenoma of the colon had normal values. Individual values of spermidine and spermine appeared to be elevated more frequently than putrescine values in these patients.

Preliminary evaluation of urinary polyamines in the diagnosis of genitourinary tract malignancy.

Normal ranges for urinary polyamines have been obtained. Non-malignant genitourinary tract disease is not associated with elevated urinary polyamines. A high correlation exists between the presence of active urologic cancer and elevated urinary excretion of polyamines. Post-treatment polyamines correlate with the continued presence or absence of genitourinary tract malignancy.

Influence of personality on achievement of medical students.

In this study second year medical students completed a battery of psychometric tests which measured both cognitive and non-cognitive personality traits. Personality profiles obtained have been compared with reported norms from some other published sources. The scores obtained from factor analyses of these tests were used as predictors of total achievement in cellular biology and physiology over two years. In agreement with reports by other authors we found that the most important trait contributing to achievement was introversion/extra-version with introversion correlating with high achievement particularly in multiple choice tests. Emotional maturity was also a major factor especially as a predictor of success in essay tests. General mental ability, verbal skills, and reading comprehension appeared as significant predictors of achievement, and these were apparently of comparable importance in both kinds of test. Students of foreign origin whose first language was other than English tended to perform better in essay than multiple choice tests but their overall performance was lower than would have been expected from their other personality traits including their verbal skills. On the other hand, students resident in college halls tended to have better overall performance than expected.

Reasons for differential performance in multiple choice and essay tests.

1. Previous studies with preclinical students demonstrated that there were factors other than topic content which produced significant differences in performance in multiple choice (MC) and essay (E) tests. 2. In this study second year medical students completed a battery of psychometric tests measuring both cognitive and non-cognitive personality traits. 3. The scores obtained after factor analyses of these tests were used as predictors of the difference in performance in 6 matched pairs of MC and E achievement tests over 2 years. 4. Students with high scores in a factor associated with introversion achieved better results in MC tests than would have been expected from their performance in E tests. On the other hand, students whose first language was not English did not perform as well in MC as they did in E tests. 5. Students with high scores in a factor associated with emotional maturity and illegible writing performed better in E tests than would have been expected from their MC results.
