[Cytogenetic and statistical study of a group of patients treated with butazolidine (phenylbutazone)].

The authors studied a group of 16 patients suffering from rheumatic diseases, who were being treated with Butazolidine (Phenylbutazone). The control cases were divided into two groups: one consisted of six patients who were suffering from the same chronic rheumatic diseases, but who were being treated with other drugs; the other group consisted of 15 normal persons whose age and sex corresponded, more or less, with those of the group of patients treated with Butazolidine. A chromosomal examination of the lymphocytes of the peripheral blood was carried out on the 16 patients and the 21 persons not being treated with Butazolidine. A comparison of the karyotypes of all the individuals studied showed no significant difference in the number of breakages between the three groups. Statistical analysis confirmed that the differences in the percentages of chromosomal damage were not significant.

Random distribution of exogenous lithium in nasal secretion and its application in substance determination.

The use of lithium as an exogenous marker to determine the dilution of nasal spray washing samples was investigated in vitro and in vivo. The correlation coefficient between the true and calculated dilution determined in vitro, using pooled secretions, was 0.99 (p less than 0.001). Thirteen washings from healthy subjects contained 5-22% secretion, while five washings from asymptomatic allergic patients contained 21-39%. The described application of exogenous lithium as a marker of dilution of nasal secretion seems a promising tool for use when a washing method is employed to take samples for biochemical investigations.

Operative thoracoscopy for recurring pneumothorax.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has markedly changed the management of recurrent pneumothorax. Thoracotomy is no longer the routine approach for the surgical treatment of bullae, partial pleurectomy, or various methods of pleurodesis. Many surgical procedures on the lung and the pleura can be performed endoscopically as safely and easily as in open thoracic surgery. These new techniques have been assessed in 94 patients. An early analysis of the postoperative data shows that the minimally invasive procedure reduces postoperative discomfort and the length of hospital stay; the rate of recurrence is no higher than that for open pneumothorax surgery.

Development of a basic instrumentation for operative thoracoscopy.

The basic instrumentation for operative thoracoscopy presented here comprises mechanical instruments used for dissection as well as HF instruments and flexible trocars. Their basic shapes and dimensions are adapted to the anatomy of the thorax. Separating the mechanical and optical elements permits a high degree of precision and safety in operations ranging from the thoracic wall, the mediastinum and the oesophagus to the lung.
