[Orthopedic activators for growth and treatment of Class II malocclusion].

Activators are functional jaw orthopedic appliances which provide various mandibular position, but always different from habitual positions. Mechanisms and modus operandi of activators explain therapeutic objectives of clinicians. When we analyse different determinants of modus operandi of activators (skeletal, muscular and articular), it is possible to classify these appliances in rigid monobloc appliances, composite or elastic activators and thrusting activators. Many prospective or retrospective clinical studies analyse dentoalveolar or skeletal effects of the activators.

Superficial architecture of the jaw-closing muscles of the cat (Felis catus): the temporo-masseteric complex.

The muscle fiber fascicles of the temporo-masseter complex of the cat were minutely dissected. Some heads were embedded in paraffin while others were put into methyl-methacrylate resin and sections were made. The results of this anatomical study demonstrate that this complex consists of the masseter muscle, the temporal muscle and two well individualized transitional fascicles: the maxillomandibularis and zygomato-comandibularis muscles. The masseter and temporal muscles are composed of individualized compartments in which the orientation and aponeuroses of the fibers of which they are composed differ with regard to the centric occlusion plane. The masseter muscle consists of a superficial fascicle made up of two layers, an intermediate fascicle, and a deep fascicle composed of two layers. The temporal muscle consists of one anterior orbital part and one posterior temporal part. This structure is in accordance with the mammalian archetype described by Gaspard and Saban. These findings should lead towards a homology-based nomenclature founded on comparative anatomy studies of mammalian species. Such a classification would permit the comparison of results obtained from physiological and histochemical studies of these complex muscle fibers when they are published by different researchers.

[Orthodontics, stability, recurrence].

The stability of orthopedic treatments has been studied in many ways, but conclusions are very divergent. Usually, the methodology is not reproducible and unfavourable to compare the results. The structural analysis, described by Lautou, Dunglas and Vermelin, help to distinguish the skeletal from the dental effects, during treatments using activators. Clinical cases treated with activator appliances show that the relapse appears when the orthopedic response is poor and when the dento-alveolar compensations are strong.

[Growth and choices in orthopedic or orthodontic therapy].

Although the clinical aspects of the skeletal Class II can be numerous, in most cases an insufficient sagittal development of the mandible can be identified. Besides the functional disorder caused by the sagittal skeletal problem, the aesthetic appearance is damaged. To provide an efficient orthodontic or orthopedic treatment, the practitioner must consider this aesthetic prejudice, while correcting the functional disorder. One of the main goal when correcting skeletal Class II relationships is to improve the sagittal development of the mandibular growth. The sagittal impact is greater for the horizontal growth and will improve the aesthetic appearance. In addition, the treatment will be easier, shorter and therefore less traumatic because of the spontaneously natural self correction. Finally, the correction will be more stable because the functions such as breathing and swallowing will be easily rehabilitated. To obtain convenient aesthetic and functional corrections of skeletal Class II relationships, four essential rules must be taken care of: finding the best therapeutic choice, choosing the best moment to start treatment, initiating an efficient unlocking, providing an overall treatment.

[Dental anomalies and eruption problems].

Abnormalities of the dental system can disturb dental and periodontal architecture. Anatomical factors and teeth eruption play a main role in these disturbances. The aim of this paper is to describe clinical examples of these abnormalities.

[Architectural structure of the pterygoidian plane of the masticatory musculature in the cat (Felis catus L.)].

The architectural analysis of the ptérygoidal plane of the cat identified the two pterygoid muscles. The medial pterygoid showed an orbital and an angular part inserted respectively on the internal face of the mandibule and on the maeto-angular ligament. The lateral pterygoid consisted of only one pterygoid bundle, involved in lateral movements and adjustments of the jaw condyle.
