This article reviews the history and types of double crown retainers, known in clinical terms as telescope crowns. It compares rigidly interlocked and resilient retainers, where the design allows for movement between the primary and secondary components of the unit. The nature of the relationship between the components determines the relationship between the removable denture, the remaining dentition, and the edentulous ridge. The resiliency or rigidity of the telescope retainers depends on the configuration of the primary and secondary components and is applied accordingly to prosthodontic requirements and clinical assessment.

This case demonstrated a mass seen on an ultrasound scan performed prior to amniocentesis to determine fetal maturity. It emphasizes the importance of scanning the entire contents of the amniotic sac rather than simply looking at the portion for which the examination was ordered. It is important to recognize such lesions to prepare for adequate management of the airway in the neonate, to prepare for surgical excision as soon as feasible, and to prepare the family for the birth of a baby with a congenital abnormality.

Prevention should be regarded as more important for the health than the cure. In adult and geriatric patients prevention is directed towards limiting disability rather than preventing the onset of the disease, since treatment is undertaken after pathological changes have taken place and some degree of invalidity is already present. Oral rehabilitation, if successfully performed, will limit the spread and further deterioration of oral conditions at any developmental stage of a functional pathology. The objective of the rehabilitation should not be the integrity of a single dental arch and certainly not the replacement of the lost teeth. Rather, the principle guiding guiding the treatment should be the achievement of a harmonious functional relation between the maxillary and mandibular jaws, so as to enable them to function in well balanced co-operation and force distribution. This objective may be best achieved by sensible planning and faultless execution, when the patient is younger, and most of his teeth and their supporting structures are still preserved.

Ventricular defibrillation was acheived in active conscious dogs with a chronically implanted automatic system composed of a defibrillator and an alternating current fibrillator. The hermetically sealed defibrillator is encased in titanium, weighs 250 g and has a volume of 145 ml. The sensor continuously monitors ventricular electircal activity and recognizes fibrillation by the absence of isoelectric potential segments. Fibrillation is induced by placing a magnet over the implanted fibrillator. The resulting syncope closely resembles the clinical entity of sudden death, while the defibrillator automatically restores normal rhythm with a truncated exponential pulse of 30 J, 15 seconds after the onset of the arrhythmia. The operational status of the defibrillator can be tested in vitro and noninvasively in vivo with an external analyzer. This experimental model allows for the first time a long-term study of the automatic implantable defibrillator approach to prevent sudden death from ventricular fibrillation under a variety of physiopathologic conditions.

Two patients with primary hypothyroidism and galactorrhea are described. Elevated serum prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels were present. Following adequate thyroid hormone replacement restoration of clinical euthyroidism and cessation of galactorrhea occurred with a fall of both TSH and prolactin levels to normal.
