Opsoclonus is a very rare ocular dyskinesia associated to a viral infection or neoplasms, being neuroblastoma in children or carcinoma in adults. A case of opsoclonus as a paraneoplastic symptom preceding the diagnosis of breast carcinoma is presented. The abnormal movements had a complete response to the administration of chlormethiazole.

Chemotaxis of human leukocytes was inhibited in vitro by four non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, namely, lysine acetylsalicylate, phenylbutazone, indomethacin, and indoprofen. Dose-dependent effects were always found and significant regression was proved for all drugs except phenylbutazone.

Two instances of successful treatment of the rare ocular dyskinesia, opsoclonus, with chlormethiazole are reported. A 65-year-old woman had the opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome associated with carcinoma of the breast; her myoclonia and opsoclonus did not respond to intravenous diazepam or phenytoin. Treatment with intravenous chlormethiazole resulted in rapid control of her myoclonic attacks, followed by slower but complete resolution of the opsoclonus. Following control of the acute symptoms the patient was transferred to an oral chlormethiazole maintenance dose which was further reduced and subsequently discontinued after 5 months, when the patient's overall clinical status had improved. A 53-year-old man with opsoclonia, myoclonia, ataxia and encephalopathy, not associated with neoplasia, was given immunosuppressor drugs to establish basal control, and oral chlormethiazole for symptomatic treatment. Almost immediately after the initial dose of chlormethiazole the patient became more orientated; he was sedated and the agitation and myoclonic fits were brought under control quite quickly. The opsoclonus responded progressively and was completely resolved after a few days. The initial oral dose of chlormethiazole was gradually reduced and was discontinued after 5-6 months. Chlormethiazole was well tolerated; it may have an important role in the management of the rare opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome.
We present the clinical manifestations and morphological characteristics in a case from a patient with familial history of leprosy that presented peripheral neuropathy without cutaneous lesions. The nerves affected showed a loss of myelinated and unmyelinated fibers as well as chronic inflammatory infiltrate. The presence of Hansen's bacillus was demonstrated in macrophages, Schwann cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts at light and ultrastructural levels. In this case, the demonstration of the bacillus in the biopsy of peripheral nerve confirmed the diagnosis.
The paper presents a case of giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma treated in our unit. New diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives for such uncommon tumours are commented upon.
The Authors, after a study in depth of the incidence of the caries in a ten years old population, following the advices of the HWO, describe on their territory an occurrence of the caries desease similar to the value referred on other works of research published in the same Region, in any case not so far from these pointed by the HWO for the year 2000. But there is still much to do in the prevention and therapy.
The Authors, after an attentive study about a population of 799 ten years old scholarboys, have found out the hygiene of the mouth is a problem thoroughly felt, but the quality isn't the quantity. Therefore we need a wider prevention, using the informations and education in the scholar and familiar world, and not only in the specialistic environment.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the hospital death rate caused by acute cardiovascular disorder and their factors conducted. METHODS: We made a retrospective review of all patients suffering from this pathology who had gone into the Casualty Ward of the Castellón General Hospital in the course of 1991: we also looked for all patients with acute cardiovascular disorder who had died in the hospital. We studied the risk factors for the patients referred using a univariant analysis, comparing those still living with those who had died. RESULTS: We find 514 patients diagnosed as having acute cardiovascular disorder, with an stroke/TIA incidence rate of 188 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The proportion of referred patients was 52%. Among these, the death rate was 27.8%. Factors affecting the death rate were the age of the patients, the reduction in the level of consciousness, and lateral gaze at the start of the stroke. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that the high death rate in our selection was due to the severity of the strokes and the advanced age of the patients, as was in accordance with the methodology used in the gathering of data, which made it possible to include patients who died early.
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the policy for hospital admission in the case of the patients who come to the Emergency Ward with acute cerebrovascular disorders. METHOD: The study was based on a retrospective analysis of the release reports from the Emergency Ward of Castellón General Hospital in the course of 1991, in which stroke, or transitory ischemic attack (TIA) were diagnosed. RESULTS: 514 patients were attended to who went to the Emergency Ward because of cerebrovascular disorder. Of these, 57.2% were referred to hospital, with 42% being sent home. It was observed that 10.65% (n = 23) they did not accomplish the criteria for stroke. There was an overwhelming number of cases of TIA diagnosed (50.2%) in patients who were not admitted, contrasting with only 7.5% being selected for admission. We considered possible explanations for this. CONCLUSIONS: We observed that as far as making the decision to admit a patient with acute cerebrovascular disorder, priority for admission was given in those cases which showed the worst neurological deficiencies, and had a worse prognosis as a consequence. Similarly, the older age (average 76.5 years old) was a prominent factor as far as those who were not admitted.
