Enzymatic phosphorylation of streptomycin by extracts of streptomycin-producing strains of Streptomyces.

Extracts of post-exponential phase mycelia of Streptomyces bikiniensis ATCC 11062, and other streptomycin-producers, catalyze phosphorylation of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin with adenosine-5'-triphosphate. The phosphate is esterified with an -OH group of the streptidine moiety. It is suggested that O-phosphoryl-streptomycin might serve as an intracellular precursor of extracellular streptomycin or as a detoxification product of streptomycin or that it might serve an unknown physiological function in the producing organism.

Review of endocrine syndromes associated with tumours of non-endocrine origin.

During the past 10 years there has been particular interest in the occurrence of a number of endocrine syndromes in association with tumours of organs other than the endocrines. Evidence is increasing to suggest that these result from the formation of hormone-like substances by the tumours. The clinical importance and theoretical implications of these syndromes constitute the justification for reviewing them here.

Pentobarbital and synaptic high-affinity receptive sites for gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Electrophysiological investigations of others show that pentobarbital enhances the inhibitory inflences of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Specifically, receptor activation is amplified and prolonged, suggesting the presence of an increased number of GABA molecules in the synaptic cleft. Either inactivation of high-affinity GABA transport or alteration of post-synaptic GABA receptors might account for these influences of pentobarbital. In this sudy the effect of pentobarbital on high-affinity uptake and binding of GABA to synaptic receptive sites has been examined. Using synaptosomes and subsynaptosomal fractions of cerebral cortex and hippocampus, it si shown that concentrations of pentobarbital, exceeding 1 mM have no appreciable effect on GABA uptake or binding. Thus the synaptic influence of pentobarbital, evident at 0.1 mM in electrophysiologic experiments, must originate from mechanisms other than the high-affinity uptake or binding of GABA. Possible sites of action include the presynaptic release of GABA and the ionophores coupled with postsynapitc sites.

Sympathetic reactivity to acute stress and immune response in women.

We evaluated if the effects of acute stress on immune parameters were apparent in only the women who showed concomitant and substantial sympathetic nervous system activation and after statistical adjustment for changes in plasma volume. Nineteen women in the follicular stage of their menstrual cycles were assessed for immunological responsiveness to a series of three 3-minute psychological tasks, which reliably elicit cardiovascular and neuroendocrine stress responses. Women were classified as high or low sympathetic reactors based on their cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to one of the three tasks, a public speaking task. The stress-induced decreases in CD4+ percentage and increases in natural killer cell number and cytolytic activity were only apparent among the high reactors. Further analysis adjusting for alterations in plasma volume changes showed that the increase in NK cell number remained. Stress-induced proliferative responses to pokeweed mitogen and phytohemagglutinin were not more apparent among high reactors. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the sympathetic nervous system plays a direct role in modulating the short term response to stress of some indices of the immune system in women.
