Mechanism of delayed ovulation in a vespertilionid bat, scotophilus heathi: role of gonadotropin, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-1.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) on ovarian androstenedione synthesis to understand the mechanism responsible for delayed ovulation in Scotophilus heathi. We found that LH stimulated a dose-dependent increase in androstenedione synthesis by the ovary in vitro. This study also showed a clear seasonal variation in the ability of the ovary to produce androstenedione in vitro in response to LH and FSH stimulation. In response to LH and FSH, maximum quantities of androstenedione were produced during recrudescence in November. The same doses of gonadotropins during the preovulatory period in February stimulated comparatively low androstenedione secretion by the ovary. On the basis of these data, we suggest that in S. heathi, ovarian responsiveness to LH and FSH peaks during recrudescence. This study also showed a seasonal variation in the effects of insulin and IGF-1 on ovarian androstenedione production in vitro. Peak ovarian responsiveness to insulin and IGF-1 was observed during quiescence in September. It is hypothesized that increased insulin/IGF-1 sensitivity during September may be responsible for increased responsiveness to LH. Increased LH release, if coincident with the period of enhanced ovarian responsiveness to LH, may result in the excessive androstenedione production responsible for delayed ovulation in S. heathi.

Albumin localization in the testis of adult golden hamsters by use of immunohistochemistry.

There is an increasing interest in different biochemical roles of albumin (Alb) in respect to testicular function. For this reason, Alb was localized by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique in the testis of adult golden hamsters. A strong Alb immunoreactivity occurred in the interstitial space and on the surface of Leydig cells. A few Sertoli cells showed a strong Alb response under the appearance of so-called leakages traversing Sertoli-Sertoli cell junctions. Spermatogonia reacted strongly, while spermatids and sperms showed rather a mild, or moderate response. Spermatocytes remained unstained. When similar maturation stages of seminiferous tubules were compared, the number of reacting cells varied strikingly. Our results support the assumption that Alb or a protein with an Alb-like immunoreactivity exerts diverse functions of the testis.

Possible role of cell death during embryonic development in the fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx Vahl.

Cynopterus sphinx breeds twice annually in quick succession at Varanasi. The first pregnancy lasts for about 150 days and the second for 121 days. Data suggest that in C. sphinx retarded development of embryo during late November to early January accounts for the longer duration of gestation in the first pregnancy. Most interestingly noticed in the present dead cells within the inner cell mass during the period of retarded embryonic development. Cell death appears to cause the formation of the amniotic cavity by the cavitation process.
